I fucking hate this country's political system.

When she reached staff at Sen. Bill Hagerty’s office, they told her, “he’s not obligated to listen to his constituents.”
I fucking hate this country's political system.
Please tie your message to a brick and gently place it on his desk through the window.
I have plans to engrave it on another sort of material and then promptly deliver it with the sound of thunder
"pro life"
as a european I might just not understand the nuance of this but WHAT IN THE FUCK?
The 2025 Medical Ethics Defense Act allows physicians to deny care to patients whose lifestyles they disagree with
“It’s absolutely not ‘pro-life’ — and not very Christian either,” said Rep. Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville), as she shared the woman’s story after the town hall. “And who else are they not going to treat? I had a friend say: what about someone who’s addicted to drugs or alcohol, or who’s struggling with mental health? If you can just refuse treatment to anyone whose lifestyle you disagree with — that’s not medical ethics. That’s fascism.”
Sounds like an attack on medical ethics to me, how is that a defense?
Its just like any other super henious piece of legislation that removes human rights. They give it some sweet helpful sounding name (eg. Patriot Act) so when anyone votes against it they can point fingers and say "THIS COMMUNIST HATES PATRIOTS!" or (eg. Kids Online Safety Act) "THIS EVIL BASTARD DOESNT WANT TO PROTECT KIDS!!!"
Its a fascist habit as old as time itself.
Yikes
Patient Registration Questionnaire Question 856. Patient's preferred computer operating system (OS): Ubuntu LTS
"Yeah, sorry buddy, we don't serve your kind in these offices."
Don't worry, they'll care about the fetus when charges can be brought against the woman for neglect.
A bunch of American men believe women should not have sex outside of marriage (except with them of course, where women are expected to be nymphomaniac whores).
Basically completely unrealistic and unreasonable shitty people
You understand it, it's fucking insane so your reaction is normal.
Well America has always been the home of the free. Its in their national anthem and a huge part of their cultural identity.
For example, you're free to perform your own bodily functions such a procreation in any way you wish, provided that you're participating in a state sanctioned marriage, and that you belong to a demographic which is desirable to the state, and that your DNA does not contain any markers for undesirable traits, and that you express continued loyalty to the supreme leader eternal.
Its such an enlightened way of life.
As an American, I also say WHAT IN THE FUCK to this.
I actually prefer you don't understand. We're an ass backwards society and we're not your allies anymore.
No nuance. Women are property to them
She wasn't even "promiscuous". That absolutely shouldn't Legally matter and doesn't morally matter at all, but the physician wasn't even going for low hanging fruit: she had been with the same man for 15 years and they had a 13yo together?? They were essentially married. Stfu dumb ass physician.
I hope it goes all the way to the Supreme Court (not that she should have to) and I like to think if I ever met said physician I would suddenly recieve divine intervention that, morally, no doctors should have Achilles tendons.
She was not the property of a man. That's the standard by which these people assess women
My gods i wish you were wrong
I hate how religious people are given permission to discriminate. Someone else's religion has nothing to do with me. I shouldn't be constrained by a religion that isn't mine and if someone can't provide care based on their religion, then they have no business being in the profession. None at all.
Ironically, they are going directly against the teachings of the book they claim to love and study daily. The New Testament is full of warnings to treat others as you would be treated, love your neighbor, accept others as they are, abandon worldly concerns and improve yourself before judging others, etc etc. I'm just a bitter atheist pointing out the ridiculous state of their "faith"
As they say: No hate like Christian 'love.'
"My religion says I don't have to stop for red lights".
Sorry, your religion isn't old enough for absurd exceptions to laws.
Ah, see, my religion infinite years old, but has only recently been revealed to me and me alone. It's actually all the other religions that are too young in comparison. Much like the children the church is throwing under the bus to protect career pedophiles.
I’m sure there’s a biblical interpretation in the big three that could lead to this conclusion.
"religious freedoms"... Yet cannot find any associated practice in their religious teachings.....
Not being married doesn't make her less pregnant. What the hell do these people think they're doing for a living -- are they gonna take care of potential babies, or are they there to preach?
It's about propagating the religion- the lives of the people are unimportant. The religion grows by enforcing a set of customs, and anyone who doesn't comply is threatened with ostracism or violence
It’s certainly making me want to become more religious. /s
¿Por que no los dos?
If they helped her medically, she could live and thrive while not conforming to their rules. They are afraid of other women under their thumb realizing the grass is greener and also pursuing such a nonconforming lifestyle. They know deep inside that their beliefs only are preserved through coercion
They want her to die.
Picket that doctor's house. Make an example of them and make sure it ends badly (bad from the doctor's pov). Career ending as best case scenario.
Alright, which doctor?
Apparently the whole practice.
We need a freedom "from" religion amendment to the constitution.
I can bet a significant amount of money the mother is black and they are simply being racist pieces of shit.
She said she does have experience navigating the world of healthcare and Medicaid and explains she feels privileged in this way — a way most others wouldn’t be, especially being a white woman and employed.
Nope she’s a white woman. I mean I agree that I would have wagered she wasn’t white and hence the treatment. But fuck these religious bigots. I’m so sick of people not even following the teachings of the religion they so desperately use to define their lives.
Sexism has always trumped racism.
How and when did Tennessee become worse than Texas and Florida? That’s the home of genuine living saint Dolly Parton, isn’t it? Every time I think I can’t become more disgusted by the U.S. I see a story like this. The ongoing gleeful predation and harm of vulnerable people, both domestic and foreign, is beyond the pale. Peaceful options have failed, and all that is left is descent to unimaginable levels of suffering and depravity and, eventually, violence. And all this at a time where the planet is literally dying and we should be doing everything in our power as a species to claw it back. It’s hard not to feel hopeless.
We’ve been considering moving back to B.C. but the way things are going I think that would only buy us a little time. This problem with fascism, capitalism, and general inhumanity is a global problem and there is no escape.
Sorry folks, I usually try to be more hopeful and solution-oriented, but this hit hard today.
Race to the bottom. Every week I hear another reason why Texas, or Tennessee, or Florida, or Oklahoma, or Missouri are the worst fucking state in existence. I feel like they're all trying to one-up each other right now and couldn't give two shits about their citizens.
How and when did Tennessee become worse than Texas and Florida?
When Haslam retired. Which he did because he saw the writing on the wall that there was no longer a place for him.
Haslam wasn't good, but as a corporate lackey, he just wanted to keep the machine running, he wasn't ideologically committed to all the christofascist culture war bullshit, and would push back on it when it would rock the boat too much. For a few years, he held back the rising tide of fascism and the state was less bad than most of its neighbors. But as soon as he left, there was a massive wave of legislation making up for lost time. The people running things now are fascist idiots, whether ideologues or opportunists, unrestrained by conscience or reason. If Fox News runs a story about something, there will be legislation about it within a week.
How did things get this bad? Because the corporate lackies created the material conditions for it. They were happy to work with and spur on the christofascists because it gets them voting Republican. And now they've created a beast they can no longer control or restrain.
Tennesseestan
She really should do a crowdfunding and get the heck out of there. Tennessee is trying to kill her and her child.
