cia.gov link. Full document, link is unbroken as of 2023-10-17.

A good article on the subject for anyone who doesn’t want to read messy typewriter documents with sometimes unfaithful OCR. Note that it was released in 2016.

I believe this was the link that had a bunch of people going “holy shit” a few weeks ago. I’ve seen it before, but it seems like there are plenty of people who haven’t.

I'm one of those people. Reading this was like finding a missing cog for a big machine, it sent me down a rabbit-hole. And it contributed to completely change my opinion of Hexbear; been (more actively) lurking around since then.

I’m glad to hear this and I’m curious what you found in your rabbit hole.

It's not glorious to admit, but seeing how you, the ebil tankies (honestly not how I saw you, but I was suspicious about many things), were right about this, I actually took the time for once to verify what I was previously waving away as some kind of exaggerations or distortions of truth. The "click" was violent enough for that. Shame on my previous lack of curiosity...

To mention a big chunk, realizing that NATO, which I still saw as a force of good despite some fuck-ups, was a complete lap-dog of the U.S. and, among other kind things, had its fingerprint on far-right terror attacks perpetrated in my country was quite a shock.

Yes. Someone recommended it be posted in its own thread. I’ve been meaning to do it.

This is disgusting, thanks

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mykola_Lebed

This guy was the main Ukrainian involved in the operation. Prolog Research was the publishing house the CIA funded for him to run. It published tons of anti-communist propaganda and pro-Ukrainian nationalist propaganda. This Village Voice article from 1988 shows how these propaganda books were then incorporated into a false historical narrative to anchor double genocide propaganda.

https://www.villagevoice.com/in-search-of-a-soviet-holocaust/

From 1949, Lebed lived in the United States. During 1952–1974, he headed the Prolog Research Center in New York; in 1982–85, he was Deputy Chairman and since 1974 he was a Member of the Board of Directors of the institution. In 1956-91 he was a member of the board of the Ukrainian Society of Foreign Studies in Munich and Toronto, publishing committee "Chronicle of the UPA (1975). Author memories "UPA" (1946, 1987). Thanks to his collaboration with the CIA and their active shielding of him, Lebed was never tried for the war crimes he and his men had committed against Poles and Jews during WWII.

That was a good read. I wasn’t familiar with Village Voice.

It was written before the CIA FIOA info came out about Project Aerodynamic as I understand, so it couldn't connect all the dots. But it does provide very useful context for how extensive the propaganda narrative has been leveraged to create deeply held false beliefs about Ukrainian history.

For a deep dive on the origin of some these false narratives, check out this post of mine: https://hexbear.net/post/342686

I'm having a heavy brain fog day and I'm having trouble parsing this. I can accept I might just have to come back to this tomorrow but can you help me identify the smoking gun here?

One of the funded groups here that the US worked with and helped grow to fuck with the Soviets are OUN/B, the Bandera faction of holocaust participants, the entire strain of current Ukrainian ultranationalism descends from Bandera.

The US policy to oppose communists aroundthe world historically has always been "find the furthest right people and support them". You can point to country after country after country that has been fucked by this. Palestine, Afghanistan, Iran, most of south america, most of south east asia, countless mass murders carried out against communists by the far right then leads to that farright taking over. US didn't care whether these were nazis, or whether they were religious extremists in the case of afghanistan or iran. They only cared that they opposed communism and would be militant.
