Now do it for game consoles

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Yakuza is heading your way

[–] piyuv@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes! It’s good they’re doing this. It would be better if they weren’t letting Nintendo brick homebrewed consoles.

[–] arararagi@ani.social 4 points 1 day ago

Japan was the first one to prohibit tinkering with game saves and consoles, they aren't going to revert it now.

If there's one thing Japan loves, it is economical competition. There are like 40 different ways to pay at a shop, it's absurd.

[–] sadTruth@lemmy.hogru.ch 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Innovation and competition at it's peak: You get to choose the color of your noose.

But (presumably) no cash or crypto because someone has to take a 3% cut.

[–] goldenquetzal@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Surprisingly a lot of Japan is cash only. Stores like this also have cash inserts built in.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 61 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That's not absurd, that's awesome

[–] Zaphod@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

Absurdly awesome!

And yet everyone will pay with cash.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This used to be the case 15 years ago, but unless you go to some tiny independently owned place, you can usually pay with credit card or suica. If not, then with one of those QR code payment options. I rarely carry cash anymore.

[–] kalleboo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah when I went over my bank statements for last year, I only went to an ATM a single time in the whole year. Mostly only need cash for stuff like parking

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Idk, I wasn't there myself. My friend went there multiple times though (last time before corona) and he said cash was often/usually needed.

[–] Slaxis@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How long ago was that? Even 7-8 years ago it was more true but it’s changed quite a bit in recent years

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

It's about that time frame. He went there few times between 2012 and maybe 2020, or year before coronavirus.

[–] WalnutLum@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nah you can't even use cash in a lot of post offices now.

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Wow, things have changed then.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wow, all of that and no crypto. That's impressive.

[–] semperverus@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Japan is permanently in the '90s (and I love it).

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 45 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've seen the phrase "Japan has been stuck in the year 2000 since 1980"

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

It's almost like Japanese boomers keep maintaining the status quo at the expense of younger generations.

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That's probably because toxic corporate culture (we-ell, one can sometimes find contributions of heroes from Japan into FOSS projects, so maybe not so toxic, especially when you look at NetBSD) they already have, so they simply can't afford breaking market laws, not in the slightest.

The rest think they can, which is wrong.

The economic stagnation in numbers is regrettable, though. I would prefer countries like Japan to grow (not on the map, I mean playing tall). And cultures.

I can’t pay with interpretive dance?! I shall not be frequenting this establishment. Good day to you.

[–] SnortsGarlicPowder@lemmy.zip 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There is a DDR cabinet in the arcade that will turn your Dance into Tickets which are accepted.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

This is one of the most Japanese things I have ever heard.

Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu

[–] Eggyhead@lemmings.world 3 points 2 days ago

That Q+ looking one near the bottom left is how Apple Pay came to be in Japan.

[–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

That's hardly a bad thing unless you can't use the most common way (e.g. paying by credit/debit card) in shops.

[–] Sat@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 2 days ago

If only that worked on dlsite

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

Is there some science to what facilitates common standards vs. dotzens of islands? Convenience of the user is only one factor (if at all), see printers.

[–] Toes@ani.social 1 points 2 days ago

With that many options, it's your bad if the card doesn't work. Wow haha

no klarna...... ABSOLUTE W

[–] psyc@lemmy.world 90 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Does that mean I can get a 3rd party eShop on my Nintendo Switch? 😆

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 59 points 2 days ago

Ha, that would be excellent. Don't forget Sony and PlayStation.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 29 points 2 days ago

Haha yeah sure. That will never happen.

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes you can! And Nintendo will then sue your ass off :-D

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Me: but I'm completely following the law!

Nintendo: Your point?

[–] mrbubblesort@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish, but this seems specifically aimed at smartphones only. However, this could open the door for Nintendo to make their own eshop for Android or Apple, and I suspect that's what the gov is going for because it would directly benefit Japanese companies at the expense of foreign ones.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Why would Nintendo want a shop on Android and Apple? They don't own those platforms...

[–] theangryseal@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They do make games for phones though. I haven’t heard of any in a while but I remember some dust being kicked up about Mario coming to smartphones about a decade ago.

I’m on my phone now actually. Let me look.

Yep.

Huh, I never knew. That's interesting!

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

They sell games on those platforms

They would love to not give a cut
