This used to be the case 15 years ago, but unless you go to some tiny independently owned place, you can usually pay with credit card or suica. If not, then with one of those QR code payment options. I rarely carry cash anymore.

Yeah when I went over my bank statements for last year, I only went to an ATM a single time in the whole year. Mostly only need cash for stuff like parking

Idk, I wasn't there myself. My friend went there multiple times though (last time before corona) and he said cash was often/usually needed.

How long ago was that? Even 7-8 years ago it was more true but it’s changed quite a bit in recent years

It's about that time frame. He went there few times between 2012 and maybe 2020, or year before coronavirus.
