Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

I'm at my city's annual hanami event and for some fucking reason for a good while there was just what sounded like generic movie trailer music blaring from the festival ground, who booked this shit

Edit: there is now Japanese music, sanity has been restored

I am so unlucky, but I am not disadvantaged by nature of my birth (outside of disability) so it sounds like I'm being an asshole when I talk about it. I'm not complaining about my life, I'm complaining about somehow always getting below the expected value in games of chance. I'm not trying to tell I sob story, I'm explaining a statistical anomaly! I react strongly to offers to go to the casino not out of a gambling habit, I would have to win a damn game to get addicted in the first place!

Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It's Martin. The answer is Martin.

Talked with my mom about housing. She's coming around that the private market can't deliver, we talked about how there's already incentives in Canada up to $1 million for building housing (think like a 3 story walk up, would more or less cover it) but 25% of built units need to be at or below market rate. We talked about how CMHC has mostly faffed about with mortgage rates or down payment percentages or amortization periods for 30+ years and have been totally unable to deal with housing. We even talked a little about how the skilled labour "shortage" just ain't a thing - there was a time I was looking for an apprenticeship and no one would hire me, no one wanted a first year apprentice (they were happy with a 3rd or journeyman), one time I walked in to a boiler maker union apprenticeship with 100 people and not one of us made it to apprenticeship. They have grants for training AND wage subsidies (something ridiculous like covering 2/3rds of wage) but employers still don't want to train cause people can leave or they risk hiring someone who doesn't work out for one reason or another (doesn't have the head for it, wrong temperament, etc).

I feel like finally we can agree that the private market just can't deliver on at least ONE thing. It does make profits! But doesn't service needs.

Absurd contrived scenario for Fallout New Vegas: First, side with Caesar's Legion, save Caesar from the brain tumor. Immediately afterwards, switch to Yes Man then Speech 100 Lanius to get him to retreat. Force the really awkward meeting between Lanius and Caesar.

Can we just agree that brunch should always involve bottomless mimosas and no judgment about second helpings

It's gonna sound extremely privileged but I'll say it my checks can 6 lbs can of unsweeten applesauce is too big. If I open it I'll have to commit to making something within the same couple of days or it will go bad and I only brought this on myself. I got it since by volume it was cheaper than the smaller ones and a great egg substitute until I found ground flax seeds where are way better just because of shelf life and storage btw. I'll use it up this weekend making cookies and pancakes maybe a cake too idk it's gonna be delicious

Finished transcribing a song yippeeeeee! Usually I end up abandoning my transcriptions partway through, but this time I transcribed all the parts and did a full harmonic analysis. Feels super satisfying.

I have figured out why doctors go insane. Here is a translation of a real conversation:

1: Oh yeah I'm gonna do like 8 hours of dry then take a nap

2: Oh yeah I did like 12 hours of dry yesterday and two hours of wet

1: You benefit from wet?

2: Kind of. But mostly it's more fun to spot wet. Cozier, you know?

1: Wet is just a waste of time IMO (Each litter pronounced and emphasised). Plus there's way more people in dry

2: Yeah you don't have to fight to see anything in wet

You know what seemed like it was gonna be huge and inevitable, but then thankfully fell off? The concept of ceiling turrets everywhere. Not that there aren't any out there, but if you played any shooter in the late 90s-early 2000s they seemed like video calls: something first predicted by sci-fi but that would obviously be ubiquitous just as soon as the technology caught up. Maybe I'm celebrating prematurely, and the true Age of Turret is just beginning.

So the Deeprock Galactic boardgame is amazing and the new Monstroscopy character is really good for cheesing the final boss.
