Aren't they in a larval state for 17 years and quite active?

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 12 points 11 months ago (2 children)

From what I've heard, the larvae feeds on one of the worst food ever in terms of calories and nutrition which is why it takes so much time. So basically they're just chilling on their piece of tree root which doesn't really screams "active" to me but maybe I'm wrong

I just knew they are larvae but that makes alot of sense. Thanks!

They suck liquid from plant roots, if anyone else is wondering.

I'm curious why they evolved to just suck liquid, rather than eating the roots.

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 3 points 11 months ago

Probably because eating all the roots would kill the tree which is unsustainable long term

Is that a photo of CiChada?

Also I thought they were awake while underground most of the time
