Of all the things young people could have latched onto, it's the decade of the great recession almost no place on earth really recovered from, a head bozo in the US that's somehow popular but turned the world into his personal drone playground, while the empire continued as it did.

It was the decade every social movement failed in, and mostly retreated back to moralistic forms of liberalism, just as every equally moralistic right wing reaction grew exponentially, leading to the current issues.

It was the decade climate change was decided to be fixed through a bunch of treaties worth less than the paper they were written on.

It was the decade of the start of the return of the malaise of collapsing empires. Poverty, hunger, climate change caused disasters. War had not went away, but resistance to it did.

Plus, pop culture (the thing most of the nostalgia is directed to - the eternal "It's Christmas ~~1996~~ 2013 and my parents got me ~~a Nintendo 64~~ the new Call of Duty" of obnoxious liberals) sucked ass.

every once and a while, I meet someone that seems like they haven't experienced a single day since 2012 and were completely unaffected by the preceding recession and I get really angry at them even when they haven't done anything to me

Imagine when the 20/30 year nostalgia cycle hits the fucking MCU movies lol

Did you read If We Burn? It was a great retrospective on the 2010s protest movements and how they failed, were coopted, or turned into tragedies. Turns out that leaderless horizonslism doesn't work - if you don't pick your leaders they will pick themselves.

How do you not get nostalgic for something like Sonic.exe though? That shit was so stupid lol I loved it as a kid

[–] CrookedSerpent@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sonic had red eyes and also the eyes had blood O.o

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

I AM GOD >:)

[–] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People (myself included) are just nostalgic for it because it’s the time they were old enough to solidly remember but not old enough to understand how fucked everything is

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 2 days ago

This is me so hard. Life was simple. This is what a lot of Amerikkkans feel as adults though as well. Pure ignorance

[–] inTheShadowOf@hexbear.net 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People are nostalgic for what they enjoyed, I don't think any of us who think fondly on the 2010s are wistfully thinking of the failures. Moments are what I appreciate

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 day ago

Back when were gleefully consooooming trading card games and MMOs.

CW: misogyny

Ah yes, the decade where the most popular word on the internet was femin*zi and the most popular games were US army recruitment ads. What a wholesome time.

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 2 days ago

The propaganda had 12 year old me hating myself for being brown after getting forced to watch a 9/11 film as a field trip.

[–] Harajukum@hexbear.net 27 points 2 days ago (2 children)

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago

You're allowed to like cool things from your past, just don't create an idealized version of that era in your head!

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

Ooooo yeah wasn't that when Wavves and Best Coast were active? Fuck I'm about to go listen to King of the Beach, what a banger

I was 11 in 2010, but I still hated it. Who cares that I had a PSP when I lived in Southern Europe during Schäuble's reign of terror?

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You're right comrade, nostalgia is reactionary. I will submit myself to re-education immediately :P

Honestly tho, my parents are labor aristocrats who made it through the recession mostly alright or they hid it well I am not sure. Its no wonder I'm nostalgic for a time when I did not have to worry

I have some personal reason to be nostalgic for the early 2010s. Besides those, the main thing I liked about that time was that not everyone owned a smartphone yet, so not every single thing was behind a smartphone app. The pop culture of that time isn't something I ever really go back to. Just as an example, Iron Man 2 came out in 2010 and it's an absolutely awful time capsule of Obama-era liberalism.

Every decade since the dissolution of the Soviet Union has sucked ass

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

I bet there's a weird millennial out there who is nostalgic for Trump's first term but doesn't like his second for some reason.

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

it's the decade of the great recession almost no place on earth

Not to take away from your main point, but the 07-08 recession was more of a western phenomena. China was relatively insulated from it along with plenty of other countries.

[–] UltraGreen@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The 2010s had very few things going for it culturally. Some good video games, a good movie here and there. Frutiger Aero? That was kinda cool right? But overall? The 2010s sucked. I was an angsty teen in most of the 2010s, and so naturally I have a bias against that time period. I hated the fashion choices, the uggs, the white woman fallcore aesthetic, curly moustaches, gross. The pop music? Wack. Awful. Mumford and sons were a poison on this earth. Imagine dragon? Eeessshhh. It's like the one decade the Mormons ate good in lol.

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Stomp and Holler, an abomination of a music genre. (maybe there's good examples around, but the bands that got big sucked ass)

I see this with folk punk. It feels weird, but that genre was sort of a flash in the pan for the mainstream. Seeing someone geek out over a cassette they found in 2010 or so is kinda wild, if a bit understandable.

[–] principalkohoutek@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think folk punk had it's moment because it was one of the last ways to hang on to an analog world. People definitely want that feeling again, but the time has passed and it just feels wrong now.

[–] Imnecomrade@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Honestly, I enjoy listening to folk and folk punk, but I would like to see more modern music in this genre with a communist focus instead of some anti-capitalist vibes music. It's partly why I am motivated to learn the acoustic guitar so I can do some performances for protests/rallies and perhaps make some original communist folk music that express truth in the material conditions today and the reality we face. Many modern folk artists are just anti-authoritarian and idealist, and they sing Amerikkka bad, Putin bad, North Korea bad, killing bad, people and love good, etc. without any understanding in theory and historical materialism.

[–] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 day ago

Is the decade of Ubisoft type of games, Activision-Blizzard releasing worst and worst CoDs, every game need to be for every person on earth with the worst holding hands possible, every major game company sequel is a dumb down, less creative version of their predecessor.

[–] sawne128@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

Correct, because the 2000s is the only decade worth being nostalgic for *Basshunter intensifies*

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I don't have much nostalgia for 2010s mostly due to my own personal struggles at the time but looking back at slops aired on spike TV for example, it's really hard to look at any of those shows more than "I can't believe the amount of trashy shit that was aired" than having any nostalgia for it.

[–] josie@vegantheoryclub.org 7 points 1 day ago

Early 2000s nostalgia is peak. Bring scene back!

[–] Tomboymoder@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

the 2010's were a terrible decade for Sonic the Hedgehog, so I agree.

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

TBH 2000-2010 of my life was awesome, no amount of bullying me in highschool for my accent can take this away from me.

2010-2020 honestly sucked.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, early 2000's, all had a vibe, it wasn't until you hit like 2009 did things start to become grey and dull, the "minimalist" aesthetic maddened
