Of course duh, I shoulda looked at the picture

Which, in turn, keeps the time flies away, thus preserving the space-time continuum.

It even domesticates some of the big ones

How else would you make asteroid cheese

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 37 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Yea that's the prevailing theory. Because of Jupiter's size and position in our solar system it likely intercepts a lot of the nastiest asteroids that are big enough that an impact with earth would wipe out all life. It's also believed that if it were not for Jupiter life might not have been able to evolve on earth at all

it's a bit of a double edge sword though. jupiter also throws stuff at us as well. (https://www.planetary.org/articles/does-jupiter-protect-earth-from-asteroids-and-comets)

This is so true

[–] Zoboomafoo@slrpnk.net 17 points 10 months ago

But isn't the asteroid belt there a belt and not a planet because of Jupiter? That sounds more like a racket to me

[–] Ahardyfellow@lemmynsfw.com 8 points 10 months ago

TIL, thanks jupiter!

[–] ColdWater@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 months ago

I believed earth's moon also shield the earth from asteroids, but I'm not really sure I pulled this info out of my arse

[–] mrslt@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago
