Wait, you guys can just decide to sleep for 8+ hours? I woke up after 6 hours this morning and my body was like "Lmao, no more sleep today."

[-] Krackalot@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, this is me too. 6.5 is my magic number. If I get less I'm tired, if I get more I'm really tired, so I've stuck with this for a while. Also found that sleeping in about 80 -90 minute intervals is the way to adjust when I need to. Don't wanna interrupt a sleep cycle.

I used to be the same, but when I started working out (going 5-6 times a week depending on stuff) I could be knocked the fuck out for 10-11 hours. Whenever I wake up from my long sleeps, I feel amazing, so much so I feel I have the energy to do whatever - something which I needed use willpower to push through whenever I slept 6-7 hours.

Sleep research has moved on from recommending that everyone needs 8 hours or more of sleep. It's nothing more than a myth now. Everyone is different, and for most adults the amount of sleep necessary in order to be fully rested is considered between 7 and 9, meaning a lot of people are perfectly fine with just 7 hours, and some need even less than that. In fact this review from 2 years ago suggests that we can't even guarantee someone will be noticeably impaired with 5 or fewer hours of sleep.

For a long time, I didn't feel fully rested with fewer than 11 hours of sleep... meaning, except for some weekends, I felt like a zombie all the time... but could fall asleep and take a nap any moment anywhere, for a few hours of wake up time worth (great for exams, conferences and the like: nap half an hour before, go totally fresh, fall on the nose afterwards). Then, last year, got some serious case of insomnia where I could neither fall asleep nor fully wake up for like a week straight... that was much worse, felt like going crazy, had to start taking meds to sleep 2, then 4, then maybe 5 hours, and still wake up feeling like a train had passed me over. Then like a month ago, suddenly fell asleep at around 7pm, didn't take my sleeping meds, and woke up totally refreshed at 2am... the F!

So, based on personal anecdotal evidence... I'd say sleep is a mystery, and I want my cyborg on/off switch now, please... 🤖

You might want to look at getting some tests done. I'd look at Sleep Apnea and Thyroid tests. Those can be major issues that don't get looked at often.

I've got two small children. I haven't slept for more than four hours in a row in about five years.

Help.

[-] bermuda@beehaw.org 11 points 1 year ago

i remember being a small kid whose body always wanted to wake up at like 5 in the morning, and every christmas I'd go to wake up my parents and be dismayed that they wanted to sleep in. nowadays i feel so evil for that haha

[-] AcidOctopus@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

As a parent with a 2-year-old, I'm already plotting my revenge for the teenage years.

[-] coffeejunky@beehaw.org 8 points 1 year ago

That one night where you do get a decent sleep , you'll wake up with a headache. Yay parenthood!

[-] lowleveldata@programming.dev 18 points 1 year ago

It's biologically impossible. I get neck and back pain sleeping over 8 hrs

[-] icesentry@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

You might want to look into buying a new bed if that's the case. You'd be surprised how much the quality of the bed affects your sleep quality.

[-] evilgiraffe666@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

The bed frame, or the mattress?

[-] icesentry@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

The mattress.

[-] Skyhighatrist@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Hell, if I get anything over 7 hours my lower back hates me for the first hour after I get up. My ideal right now, is about 6 hours, and I typically wake up naturally after about that. Unless I'm very tired.

[-] abir_vandergriff@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

You might need a new a different bed. That and exercising regularly completely killed my lower back pain.

[-] dept@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago

my bed is too comfortable that i wake up after 12 hours

[-] Skyhighatrist@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

The bed is the most likely culprit, but new mattresses are expensive.

[-] SlovenianSocket@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

You can get decent ones on Amazon for less than $500. I think I paid like 350 for my 12” deep one, I’ve rotated it every 3 months and it still feels like new a few years later

[-] woodnote@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Same! I have chronic neck pain that I've been working to address for about 3 years. We have a new mattress and I've been through probably 5 sets of pillows in that timeframe to get the perfect set that doesn't leave me feeling shitty when I wake up. Nonetheless, I get about 6.5 hrs of sleep a night and wake naturally from that without feeling tired during the day. I slept for 8 hours last weekend and felt worse than I have in a long time - back, neck, and shoulder pain and felt more groggy and sluggish than I have in ages. I'm with you!

[-] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 16 points 1 year ago

I heard from a friend that this game wants your screen to be on all night? Is that true?

[-] judog24@cheddarcrackers.club 14 points 1 year ago

The app advises you to turn your phone over so the screen is facing the bed. The screen turns off but the game is still running. It also advises you not to place your phone under a pillow or blanket to prevent overheating.

[-] Moonrise2473@feddit.it 19 points 1 year ago

Lol phone on and nearby the bed? The best way to get only 2 hours of sleep

[-] icesentry@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

Just activate the silent mode. I don't really get the issue honestly.

[-] Moonrise2473@feddit.it 8 points 1 year ago

Brain at 3 am: "what if this and that?" => Takes the phone and goes in a Wikipedia rabbit hole for three hours

[-] merrickal@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Just tried this last night. I got about 5 1/2 hours of sleep, stressing about leaving the potential fire hazard next to me.

[-] v3ritas@infosec.pub 7 points 1 year ago

If you don’t have the Pokémon GO Plus+ it needs the phone to be on =\

[-] Ultrawide1654@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 year ago

Wait.. they made an app/game for sleep which requires the screen to be on all night unless you pay?

I am assuming Pokemon GO Plus is a paid service.

[-] Reil@beehaw.org 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The Pokemon go plus+ (yes it's two pluses) is a little device, sorta like a flattened PokeBall, rather than a service.

[-] v3ritas@infosec.pub 4 points 1 year ago

They tell you to place the phone facedown so the screen will at least dim & not be keeping you from sleeping (hopefully). Otherwise yeah, the alternative is to get the device that can track sleep without leaving the phone screen on.

[-] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

Daaaamn the pokemon go plus + is like $75 here. That's crazy!

[-] Grimpen@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

My wife got her PG++ at Best Buy in Canada for $75 CA, IIRC.

[-] v3ritas@infosec.pub 1 points 1 year ago

Wow, I didn’t think I paid that much for mine. I preordered it when it came out, but I thought I was paying closer to $50. Not cheap either, but still not $75

[-] fushuan@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

But the weekend only has 2 days! I can't make more weekend days to sleep 8+ hours!

[-] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 year ago

Kinda reminds me of Tamagotchis that go to sleep at night so you can’t stay up playing with it.

[-] Sentinian@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago

Having a long commute has taught me the valve of going to bed on time. Despite having to wake up at 4am I can easily hit that 8.5 hour mark most nights, just by actually turning off electronics and such. I also sleep really well cause of it.

Before anyone comments I don't have any children so yes I know it is easier for me but this post is for those who are on the same boat as me. You signed that right away once you had kids (which is the main reason I am waiting till I am a very good position in life to have them)
