As the Fediverse continues to grow, people are looking to build new experiences that change what's possible on the network today.

Flohmarkt is a nascent project intended for selling personal items, and may be the first attempt of its kind here.

I am interested and I like this.

However, I don't really get it. The site linked just seems like a feed of all products.

Is there a way to see caregories based on people marking up their items?

Is there an ActivityPub spec around these?

Lovely idea but what is that name

[-] cron@feddit.org 49 points 2 months ago

German word for flea market

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 29 points 2 months ago

Now that I know I love it.

could've just read the first two paragraphs.

Reading the article before posting?

Believe it or not, straight to jail.

I just realized the Swedish slang for flea market would work a charm. Loppis. It even sounds like a hip app. Someone quick make it an open fedi platform before the capitalists take it!

Edit: It's short for loppmarknad. Loppa = flea. Marknad = market.

Loppis sounds way better than Flohmarkt, and I say that as a german native speaker.

flea market

I don't know how, but i kinda imagined it even though i don't speak a word of German (nor i am an English native speaker). It just... uh, sounds like it.

[-] cron@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

It's quite obvious from the context

That is the German name for flea markets. It’s when people sell old stuff they don’t want or need anymore in their garden/some square/the street.

Guess the creators are Germans…

A standard name for a open source project \s

I don't think the "decentralize and federate everything" strategy is a good idea when it comes to online marketplaces.

We've seen how quickly bad actors can wreak havoc on the Fediverse like that one time when Lemmy Shitpost was closed for weeks due to people creating new instances of their own and spamming the community with CSAM. Imagine how much you open the community up to scams or criminal activity when money gets involved.

[-] hoshikarakitaridia@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

I mean if there's a time to test it out, it's right now I would argue.

Lemmy is still small enough to test those things.

[-] curry@programming.dev 4 points 2 months ago

It will probably split and congregate around instances focusing on heavy moderation and KYC vs crypto-focused free-for-all ones if they ever gain traction.

[-] hanke@feddit.nu 1 points 2 months ago

I believe money shouldn't be involved.

Just match sellers and buyers together and let them figure the terms and transaction out themselves.

All that is needed is a way to find what you want and a solid system of building trusted profiles with ratings and such.

Not a simple task, but keep the money out and it will all be easier.

All that is needed is a way to find what you want and a solid system of building trusted profiles with ratings and such.

Wouldn't the second part require a trusted means to verify that a given profile actually sold you the promised thing, as well as some trusted means (two-party signing, maybe) to announce that a payment actually took place?

Almost named it something people will remember how to spell.

[-] Chais@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Flohmarkt? Seems simple enough.

[-] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 10 points 2 months ago

Very interesting, I made a local community !kiwiclassifieds@no.lastname.nz a year or so ago but have done nothing with it

[-] 96VXb9ktTjFnRi@feddit.nl 3 points 2 months ago

I would love for this to become successful! I am assuming it's not in any great state yet, but the decentralized future is waiting for us !

[-] Lemmchen@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

There have already been projects like that in the cryptocurrency space.

[-] deadsuperhero@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah, I'm aware. I think the Nostr space in particular is doing a really great job, and has some good ideas on how to make it work. Why this development is significant, though, is that it's happening in ActivityPub space. It's not as robust, and doesn't have all the answers. But, the existence of such a project means that people within the space are already thinking about how to make this concept viable for the Fediverse.
