Akshully you mean DS9, the star trek with the highest concentrations of Ferengi.

Has anyone noticed a slight uptick in women - usually in male-dominated spaces - calling themselves females? I find it so jarring when I encounter it. Like. Internalised misogyny is such a bitch ):

[-] Angel@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago

Some of this coincides with transphobia.

[-] niph@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

That makes so much sense. Fuck

Yep. I grew up in those places. Where those women quote New Testament verses about women needing to be quiet in church, or telling me that women shouldn't be in a position of power because [offensive reasons].

I feel like Penn Jillette would be the first to do this lol. At least once upon a time, I think he started to recover from his libertarianism last I heard of him. He also had Michael Parenti on his show once shrug-outta-hecks

God, I hope so. Of all of the heinous shit that I've done in my life, I consider reflexively trying to catch him when he tripped over the stage steps when I saw him at the Rio to be, well, it's in the top 50.

The best part of that night was waiting for a cab next to a bunch of Aussie tourists who were genuinely freaked out by his "keep a tiny metal bill of rights in your pocket when you go through TSA" and "carry a 3-D printed gun with you on the plane in case the gubbermint tries to take your guns away while you're on a plane" schtick. Like, yes, gaggle of early-20something Aussie girls, it is that level of batshit here, and you decided that it sounded like a fun tourist destination, "gambling Mecca run by organized crime" notwithstanding.

[-] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

i think any academic writings are kind of exempt from this rule, it has more to do with casual everyday speech

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

what if they're going for an alliteration thing like "females and fellas"

[-] magi@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Haven't seen this format for a while ^^

Seriously asking, i seen "females" and "males" used everywhere including here, is it not ok? I was under impression that in English those are neutral words (unlike in Polish where its very insulting when used for humans).

[-] josie@vegantheoryclub.org 8 points 2 months ago

The problem is that a lot of misogynists will use "females" to describe women and "men" to describe men. I don't use reddit anymore but there was a subreddit about this very thing called r/MenAndFemales

[-] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 months ago

Ty for answer

[-] Gay_Tomato@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Think about it in a similar vein to the word jew. You can tell exactly when someone is using it as a noun specifically to be offensive. There also are ways you wouldn't normally use those words very often if you aren't a bigot.

[-] Angel@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Or the word "gay" lmao

[-] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

Depends on the context. In formal scientific or academic writing it's perfectly normal to use this language for humans. In most casual settings though, dudes who say "female" in lieu of where most would say "woman" is a bit of a red flag. Betrays an unfamiliarity with women and an "otherness", like they are some weird test subject they observe from afar and take notes about.
