"Why and how would you falsely confess to anything?"

Like this.

TLDR: cops tortured this poor guy into believing he killed his father while on medication. They threatened to euthanize his dog. He tried to hang himself in the interrogation room. Then they found his father ALIVE. Then they sent him to a psychiatric ward, since he was unstable from the torture THEY inflicted.

It sickens me to see that someone thinks this can't happen.

The mast majority of legal precedings end with a plea deal.

"Plea guilty to this misdemeanor with a fine and walk out of jail today, or wait in jail for 3 months and fight an uphill court case where people will blindly trust the police and we can fabricate any narrative we want"

"Oh you want to fight and post bail? Okay well for three months we require biweekly drug screenings you pay for, you have a curfew, and if the police can come up with some other bs charge while you're out, we get to tack on bail jumping"

It's not hard to see why people will admit to being guilty while innocent when pleading guilty won't result in jail time

Imagine actually believing those 5 kids killed someone, got convicted, then managed to have their conviction overturned in some kind of mass "coverup"

Fucking bonkers what people will believe these days

Certain white people can't fathom submitting a false confession to avoid worse consequences because those white people grew up with privilege and preference from the system. They think good always triumphs over evil and right always wins over wrong. And this is true in the long term (or at least so I believe) but the key to understanding this is that the long term in this case isn't understandable in human scale. Its in the scale of the human species. Right winning over wrong requires continuous and continued pressure to make it happen because we're not there yet

It's funny because these are the same people who will say white privilege isn't real

Or that racism ended when Obama was elected

100%. They've eaten the propaganda and haven't learned to listen. And when confronted with the truth there's only two options: grow and develop (that's what a lot of people these days did) or double down on the lies. There's nothing worse in this worldview than admitting to being wrong because that's a form of weakness. Admitting to being wrong is worse than being wrong. So somewhere inside them, they push down the truth because doing so would be worse than admitting they were mistaken

I'm a white people and I approve this message.

Yeah cards on the table, in a white dude, too. Frankly I find it hard to fathom looking at my more marginalized brethren and not listening. Maybe I'm more open to listen as a bisexual man, so I've tasted a little bit what it feels like to be othered in our society. I know it really happens because it has happened to me. But still. You have to deny the humanity of your siblings to not realize that what black, brown, and woman people say about their oppression is real.

This is true in the long term (or at least so I believe)

You're a better man than I

I wanna see the post-Guantanamo Bay version

I’m a dumb stoner with a lifetime of unhealthy food, booze and drugs. People make me feel like Einstein.

Israel interrogates Palestinians, including kids, and it has resulted in false confessions. When you fear for your well being, you’ll say anything that you think the interrogators want to hear because you think it will help end the hellscape you’re in.

Narrator: it doesn’t.

Julia is famous among psychologists because she was able to implant false memories into a group of subjects and convince 70 percent of them that they were guilty of a crime they did not commit, and she did so by using the sort of sloppy interrogation techniques that some police departments have been truly been guilty of using in the past.
