Japanese population knows less about its past atrocities than the USA does, and that's not an easy bar to get under
We had a Japanese student in my highschool Japanese class as a proxy ESL for him. I remember some of the kids asked him about WW2 and he said his teachers taught him that Hitler tricked the Japanese into joining the Axis powers lol.
He was super into pro wrestling and an overall goofball.
