It might not be uniquely American but imo there is something particularly anglo about the way that politics there is individualized, which leads to family rupture. The system is already perfect, so the problem must be that your grandpa has bad opinions.
It is similar in the UK; the Americans just do it with more razzmatazz.
I can't speak about the US, but i know a lot of people who've gone no contact with their parents at least for several years - partially because the parents are fascists and the kids are trans, but it doesn't end there. That not only means these parents are over the top transphobic, it also correlates massively with these parents already being abusive as hell before the coming out of their child, both to them and their cis siblings.
Chuds just aren't likely to be the kind of parents that are at least safe to be around for their kids. Their world view comes both with an extreme tendency to dehumanize others, venerate cruelty and view children as the property of their parents. If you do not share these views, justifying how they treat you, conflict is inevitable.
These are rarely falling outs over politics alone. There's usually actions behind this as well, typical ways to mistreat kids. Most folks who stop talking to their dad do not just do this because dad has bad takes. But he will say that's the reason because decades of verbal, psychological and physical abuse aren't something he views as even worth mentioning.
