I have read and enjoyed the Ibex group translation. It is not as rich a world as DE, but has complex and interesting characters. I would not recommend it as a standalone novel, but good if you enjoyed DE and want more.

Another distraction from New. I wish people would focus on the movies.

This was a good read, thanks for sharing.

I recently read Homage to Catalonia and found myself admiring his actions, but clearly he has some serious wrongs to account for when you look at a fuller picture. I remember in my Florida teenage years both Animal Farm and 1984 were explicitly taught to prove to us the dangers of Communism in what was supposedly an English class. (And on reflection, 'English' was a more accurate label than 'Literature'.)

The life sandwich of Colonial stooge, brief interlude fighting the fascists, to anti-Communist state tool is hard to swallow. I'll make a note and just reserve my historical admiration for the good fight and seek out some other authors less tainted by all the baggage.

My theory:

  • Since humans are upright and scan the horizon it makes sense for flags to have wide orientation and horizontal stripes.
  • A train has no need to scan the horizon since they live on a track and are not upright.
  • It therefore would be more visually appealing to the senses of a train for them to visually oriented for a taller than it is wide flag with vertical stripes.

Ohhhh interesting, I didn't know we had a brilliant economist on hand. Those pesky regulations!

I see this moon launch as an exorbitantly wasteful, nationalist project. No money for healthcare and housing, but plenty of money to boldly go where man has gone several many times before.

When I bring this up with liberal friends and family, they give me a sort of incredulous look and talk about how wonderful and scientific and non-political it is. I don't mind being the "you've gone too far left" guy, but you talk to the same people about military spending and they're right on board.

Is someone here able to diagnose my crankiness and explain why this is actually a good use of resources? (Will also accept echo-chamber validation and ways to use this to increase class consciousness, if offered.)

In the last year, I finally decided to drop out of the democratic party and work on politics more aligned with my principles. I'm trying to get politically engaged and stop being a keyboard warrior / lazy DSAer / bare minimum protest attendee and help organize... for the Revolution!

But so far I'm finding I'm failing to actually make it through the other side of the entry barrier. I've attended union organizing trainings and felt like I left a series of seminars and was now basically on my own. When trying to enter local socialist orgs, I'm getting tested on my ideological fit and they're making me do a lot of reading and interviewing.

I appreciate the education and all, and the people have been nice and generous with their time, but after attending an intro meeting or two I have to ask: is there any there there? Once I actually get let in, is it still people sitting in rooms reading theory at each other? Is it just more meetings? When will it get pragmatic? When will I actually be doing something useful? Or does that come later and right now I'm a liability / not educated enough to contribute?

Appreciate perspectives from those that have been down a similar path and open to suggestions and recommendations.

Is there any corroboration for this outcome beyond a reddit self-post? I too hate this fucking war, but I'm not a doctor of oil science so it's hard for me to take this at face value.

Why not simply use Mastodon and pick a server you like?

Are they planning to put "Allow discretionary public executions by the state? Yes or No" on the ballot?

Sweet potato pie is a better pie, and truly American. Also, cheese is gross.

I scan read "Pennywize" as "Paddington" and that increased my confusion dramatically.
