Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

holy shit, straight up execution. There's no way it was justified, there was 8 whole guys on him, he couldn't be doing anything. And if he could somehow muscle off 8 whole CBP agents, the CBP is criminally incompetent.

They mention he was armed, but they don't ever claim he fired any shots. This is just like all those racist shootings where cops use a gun as justification. It's illegal to carry a gun if you're PoC now, de facto. Carries the death penalty if they don't like you, de facto.

the other angle clearly shows the beige/green jacket goon with a ski mask pulling his gun out prior to the first shot and not flinching after the first shot which tells me he shot first.

I just want to say that anyone motivated to do something cool: don't do it during a confrontation. You'll get innocent people hurt, and you're less likely to get away with it (too many cameras/live streams, plus lots of backup around/en route). Surprise ambushes have a much higher chance of both success, and escape.

innocent people were getting hurt, the other angle shows ice goons shoving a lady which prompted the victim to step in to defend her. He shouldve pulled his gun out tbh.

I wasn't making commentary on the video. In fact, I can't even bring myself to watch it. I was speaking in terms of the feelings that many undoubtedly have in the aftermath.

Minnesota has a right to defend itself by any means necessary against the Trumpasto.

The Republicans suddenly becoming anti 2A is not unexpected but also hilarious. They've spend literal decades running their entire messaging on being against gun control, and now they're just saying if you have a gun you're a terrorist. Something even more extreme than what any liberal position on gun control has ever been.

The Republicans suddenly becoming anti 2A is not unexpected but also hilarious.

I think they are in a transformative process. Rightwing media is surely already testing out euphemistic phrases to describe "non-republicans" with guns. Sometime soon (By Monday?) - they'll choose their pet term.

I think they'll smoothly segue into saying something like... The 2A is a fundamental American right. But agitators shouldn't have any gun rights at all. They aren't American and hate America.

Reagan did it before with zero qualms.

They're not going to leave any risk for a BPP or Negroes With Guns situation if they can help it.

"Own the libs" that's their position, they too also really deep down believe in nothing outside of inflicting the maximum pain possible.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 19 points 10 hours ago

Yeah Liberals never argued that gun owners should be executed in the street, they just wanted regulations lmao

A photo of the murdered man.

This is Alex Pretti.

This morning he was murdered by ICE. Six ICE agents held him down and shot him at point blank range. Alex was a nurse and researcher at the VA. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and we stand united in action calling for the abolishment of ICE.

American brainworms are wild. Man in a Vietnam hat (proud of terrorizing peasants in another continent) gives an interview about how he will die to ensure everyone VOTES, and then he screams at other protesters for getting too confrontational with the pigs. What a fascinating example of the vibe-soup of American political thought

First they came for the Palestinians in Gaza and I did not speak up because I don't live there

Then they came for minorities here and I did not speak up because I'm not a minority

Then they came for white activist lesbian and I did not speak up because I'm not an activist nor a lesbian

Now they came for a guy with concealed carry permit and there's no one left to speak out for me

A Bluesky post

ICE is now responsible for 66% of the homicides in Minneapolis this year.

In the last 5 years

US citizens murdered by illegal immigrants: 9

US citizens murdered by ICE: 35

Absolutely crazy. There's no good reason to keep ICE around, they need to be abolished.

10 Billion More to ICE

[–] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 55 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

The feds gassed everyone and then ran away, and now it's state troopers who are confronting the protesters, while Waltz gives press conferences about how ICE is bad and has to leave.

The murdered man's name is Jeffrey Pretti.

Federal agents fatally shot a man this morning in south Minneapolis, setting off confrontations between protesters and agents at the scene. It was the second fatal shooting involving federal agents who have swarmed Minnesota as part of a massive immigration enforcement operation. The Department of Homeland Security said the man was armed with a gun and two magazines of ammunition and circulated a photo of the weapon. DHS said the agent fired in self-defense.

Two people familiar with the incident told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the man was Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37. The two people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose details of the incident. Video shows several agents wrestling the man to the ground and shooting him multiple times.
