Second question: How does one afford to live in an airport?

[-] NeptuneOrbit@lemmy.world 28 points 5 months ago

If you go to the wiki list and read some of the back stories.... Begging. A lot of them just relied on handouts to eat. Not too different from regular homelessness.

With air conditioning. Hey buddy, can you buy me a $10 cup 'o coffee? Tho' I could def. see this being a sort of funky, off beat vacation destination.

[-] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 1 points 5 months ago

That sounds like at least luxury homelessness to me

[-] general_kitten@sopuli.xyz 21 points 5 months ago

Free housing. How can people afford to live somewhere else in this economy is the better question.

[-] pennomi@lemmy.world 23 points 5 months ago

It’s the food cost I wonder about. I assume all other needs are relatively accessible at an airport for free.

[-] BakerBagel@midwest.social 11 points 5 months ago

Begging and panhandling essentially. It's not really any different than homeless people hanging out at the mall, only safer because everyone has gone through a security screening.

Hair cut, shoe shine, 15$ Beers, 20$ burgers. It's intriguing. Non-denominational meditation space.

How do they afford to drink at an airport if they've had difficulty finding work? Also, damn, can't smoke at airports anymore.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 19 points 5 months ago

Also, damn, can't smoke at airports anymore.

Actually you can, even in the US, although it's limited to major international airports. The terminal smoking area is like a giant room with industrial ventilation and double "air lock" type doors

[-] Geobloke@lemm.ee 6 points 5 months ago

I find the term "terminal smoking" very dark

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

I think that's only available at a select few airports now. I saw one in Phoenix many years ago, but I've never seen one in Seattle SEATAC or any other major airports, possibly because I stopped looking for them. I used to pay extra to fly through Colorado instead of Phoenix because you could smoke in the airport bar in Colorado, while looking at a beautiful mountain backdrop. It was also just an all around better airport.

[-] ShepherdPie@midwest.social 6 points 5 months ago

Vegas has a smoking lounge with slots still and LAX has a balcony hidden behind some restaurants in one of the terminals.

[-] Avg@lemm.ee 4 points 5 months ago

Last time I was ATL, it had dedicated smoking rooms, looked like a fucking smog aquarium.

[-] BubbleMonkey@slrpnk.net 4 points 5 months ago

That’s exactly how I’d describe them too. I used one one time. It was so much worse inside than it looked from outside. You don’t even need to spark your own, just walk in and inhale a couple times, and leave coughing your ass off.

I’d rather go back through security every time (probably because I used to work at an airport that didn’t have smoking areas, so had to go through security multiple times a day).

When I had longer layovers (more than 2 hours), like the 13 hour one when I shipped out from basic, I just hung out outside looking homeless for the duration, because it beat going through security.

(Don’t smoke kids; I quit years ago and it was never good)

Can smoke at Manchester Airport, granted it’s outside, but you can still smoke whilst waiting for your flight after you’ve checked in.

Noice! I don't smoke any more, but I have a lot of empathy for smokers after being addicted for a couple decades myself.

Yeah we gotta understand everybody has their own journey.

In the last few years I’ve stopped abusing Xanax, Codeine, Cocaine, and most recently weed. Rest assured cigarettes are the next thing to go. I’ve never had an issue with alcohol but not drank in a decade so I might as well become a monk at this point.

I’m still an addict, just try to be addicted to healthier things you know.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

I quit all nicotine and picked it up again after I quit drinking. Like you said, I was feeling like a boring monk or something. I needed some sort of vice! I'm just vaping now though, so I don't freak out if I can't have it like I would with cigarettes. I once walked 10 miles to the store to get cigarettes. I would never do that for vape.

Yeah it’s crazy what addiction will do to you.

I’m scared to vape as they taste so nice and I’d rather just put some patches on, have some freaky dreams and quit cigs again.

Now this makes me wonder... is there a list on Wikipedia that lists every weird list there?

[-] shinysquirrel@lemmy.ml 15 points 5 months ago

there's a list for unusual wikipedia articles

A cow with antlers atop a power line pole. Wikipedia contains other images and articles that are similarly shocking or udderly amoosing.

Amazing.

List of lists of lists: This article itself is a list of lists, so it contains itself (see recursion)

For the Chilean town, see Lolol

Sounds like a fun/terrifying place, the "land of crabs and holes"!

[-] Muscar@discuss.online 2 points 5 months ago

Are the crabs and holes separate, do the crabs have holes... or are there holes that have crabs?

[-] ParabolicMotion@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

This sounds like something my husband would have done after Wal-Mart fired him from his management position.
