Russia to be first country to cut first subsea fiber optic cable connecting Africa with Australia

[-] Evotech@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago

Wild to be gaming in Australia. Playing with the chinese and africans

[-] MCHEVA4EVA@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

I'm in Perth where this cable will go. We do occasionally play with Chinese players it's happened in a few games not a lot though. It's mostly SEA players. WA is in this weird spot for gaming because all of the game companies put there servers in melb or sydney and we get shafted on ping. Because of the time difference if you play late at night and there aren't enough players you often get pushed to SEA servers. We get a lot of Indos and Singaporeans on our servers too. Will be interesting to see if we end up playing with more Saffas.

The fact that there isnt one is useed as proof of a flat earth, I wonder what they will come up with when this goes in?

[-] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 16 points 1 month ago

Duh, Google is obviously in on the conspiracy.

I think in their crazy world, the north pole is at the center of the earth disk and Antarctica is actually an ice wall around the perimeter that keeps the water on the disk. Therefore, Africa and Australia are on opposite sides of the disk (like left-right not heads-tails) or are near the out perimeter and no one would build a cable going across that long of a distance.

If that makes your brain hurt because of the stupidity, that's because it is. Flat earthers are only good as the target of a joke because we can all agree that it's stupid. There are some entertaining videos on YouTube of people making fun of them, or of themselves proving themselves wrong.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 8 points 1 month ago

Why not the south pole being in the center of the earth.

And I actually looked on a map, Africa is much further away to Australia than I thought.

It is a loosing battle to try to make sense of the nonsensical. Only use their craziness as a source of humor and entertainment.

True. Thanks

Well you see, the UN's logo is actually a top-down view of Earth. Apparently. Because they can't keep a conspiracy secret without leaving some clues in the open for kicks.

[-] Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

many countries mark Antarctica as neutral territory and there are laws surrounding what you can and cant do in Antartica so doing any business move there is probably not ideal unless you want to piss some countries off even if this is objectively going to help countries get better connected.

[-] NoIWontPickAName@kbin.earth 2 points 1 month ago

I think they meant in the flat earth scenario

[-] BrownianMotion@lemmy.world -2 points 1 month ago

Meanwhile, many Australians would like to cut WA off with a chainsaw, and push it back to South Africa with all the S.Africans on it.

[-] 7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

I thought the ice wall was knocked down by the white walker dragon...

You know what I'm not even going to continue this joke because I don't want to give any credit to season 8

Fuck D&D Where is the Lemmy version of /r/freefolk?

All I've ruined for you is disappointment

[-] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I've only found one post in which someone points to a map, claiming the lack of undersea cables between the southern pointy bits of land is evidence they're on opposite sides of the disc.

[-] NoIWontPickAName@kbin.earth 1 points 1 month ago

That is 1 too many, unless it all really is a conspiracy, in which case I think they deserve the win just for convincing so many people in so many countries to all keep their mouths shut.

I think a flat earth is actually more likely than that though

[-] evidences@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I see on occasion people talking about the lack of flights across the southern hemisphere as being proof, very similar concept.

[-] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Standard map projection strikes again. Starting from the tip of South Africa, it's 4300 miles to Uruguay (where you'd land straight east) and 5300 to Perth, Australia. New York City is 3300 miles to Portugal and obviously the smoothest route to Australia is hopping through southeast Asia. Coincidentally, the northern hemisphere has way more population.

Cape Town is only 34° south. Going to 34°N, you're lined up with Los Angeles, Dallas, and Atlanta USA, then Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, then the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, middle of China, southern tip of South Korea, and grazing below Tokyo. It's still 4100 miles between Georgia (USA) and Morocco.

There are no southern polar flights and no southern undersea cables because the southern continental points aren't as far south as the northern points are north. Population volume doesn't create the demand for more direct service.

[-] henfredemars@infosec.pub 2 points 1 month ago

I wonder if the lack of such cable is related to the high Internet prices there.

[-] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 2 points 1 month ago

~~Or the fact that you have to lay a cable some 9,000km through some of the roughest / windy seas. It's not called the Roaring Forties for nothing~~

Edit misread your comment

[-] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 14 points 1 month ago

Shit do i finally get better internet. Or is that reserved for the corporations?

Ropes I Austriali? Our tongue is stuck so far up Uncle Sam's arsehole we can taste their coffee before they do.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

What's next, a cable from Batswana to Brazil?

[-] ultracritical@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Probably not. Too much alliteration. There is one from Angola to Brazil though!
