While this accident would likely have severely damaged any vehicle, the sardine-can-style peeling of bodywork on the Cybertruck may be due to its unique construction. Whereas a standard body panel would have likely crumpled and deformed, the Cybertruck’s rigid stainless steel material likely wasn’t able to, and was instead ripped off the vehicle.

Aren't "crumple zones" a thing cars are supposed to have?

Only weak pansy cars have crumple zones. Back in my day, the cars were built stronger. You could run over a cat and barely feel it. Head on collision? I could drive away from those, provided the engine block didn't end up in the passenger space. These modern cars just give up and die, and the mandatory seat belts just trap you inside instead of being safely thrown clear of the vehicle. AMERICAN STEEL! LEADED GASOLINE! I YEARN FOR THE GOOD OL DAYS!

Crumple zones absorb energy of a collision. Our new detachable body panels disperse it. Damn the pedestrians.

The number of times I've actually seen that justification for not wearing a seatbelt...

Maybe if you are merely an auto manufacturer with decades of experience you make cars a bit beneath the standards of a manchild emerald mine beneficiary pretending to be a tech genius.

[-] nickwitha_k@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 month ago

Yeah... I'm pretty convinced that bribery was involved to get safety standards approval.

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Looks pretty crumpled and deformed to me. Are we sure the skin is not a crumple zone

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago

Ok so I'm not saying it looks GOOD but....wow, this car is so much less ugly in black.

I have even less respect for people who buy the plain silver knowing this is an option.

That's likely a wrap as there's no paint on offer from Tesla and a clear vinyl wrap is available for I think 3k. This black wrap was likely done at a third party shop. Probably cost around a 300 to a grand depending.

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

I looked it up before commenting because I thought the same thing and it seems Tesla started offering it as an option late last year

Huh, looks like Tesla is offering a colored wrap. I stand corrected.

That is far too expensive for a self healing wrap though. $6500 JFC

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I was a little surprised because I've never seen one before. I had two snarky comments lined up depending on if it was first or third party lol

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 6 points 1 month ago

A wrap probably doubles the protection from the environment (or more).

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

You can probably take it through the car wash and not have it brick on you too!

[-] barsquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I played a lot of N64 so the aesthetic is nostalgic. Unfortunately for Tesla, I don't have enough money to buy a video game accessory at their price. For what they're asking I'd need it to be an actual vehicle with the capability to survive a light rain.

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

What about the aesthetic reminds you of N64? If it was light gray I'd definitely agree but it just looks industrial to me.

[-] barsquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Just that low poly nature of it. Makes me recall a time when the main character triangle counts were just in the double digits.

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Ah fair enough, it does indeed look like it belongs in Mario 64 or something. I was only picturing the console itself for some reason

It’s not even waterproof…

[-] ChowJeeBai@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

But not aHoLeOfDiRt proof, apparently.

[-] barsquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Remember to activate car wash mode on your way to the apocalypse lol

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

That side window not even cracked tho.

But seriously, a huge point these articles never seem to include is whether the photo is before or after rescuers pried it apart to get the people out. I’ve been fooled before by horrible accident damage that was just “jaws of life”

[-] barsquid@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Yeah I don't see the "can of sardines" shit in the ditch photo. But why are these things stuck in mud and wet sand so often, I thought they were intended to go outdoors for camping? And it doesn't look like it was rolled, so why would rescuers need to use the jaws in the first place?

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

It’s a funny image to think of, isn’t it? Needs jaws of life because stuck in mud?

[-] PDFuego@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Jesus the comments on that site...

I don't really get why someone would link to a shitty site like that, when the entire source is a single tweet. Just link to the tweet.

Or better yet, don't link to anything related to Musk and ignore him. The only reason Musk has gotten away with all his lies and bullshit is because everything he does gets shared around like it's a big deal. Enough fucking Musk spam already.

I wish more people lived through enron / remembered it, because that kind of firehose* of bullshit is 100% musk
