Every time I try with a link (from imgr or other equivalent), it says that the external image was removed.
Is it secure to upload directly from a phone?
I was told that external sites are preferable because they strip metadata
Huh? I thought our hexbear lemmy instance (local hosting) was the thing that strips metadata automatically.
I have no idea.

You can strip exif locally, I'm told this site does the same but may as well do it yourself beforehand
