news
Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Hexbear has the best posters, I mean, they're putting out the highest quality original content. The memes, no other instance can compare when it comes to the memes. I've seen people from far off instances come just for the meme comm, the memes are that good. Some would say the best, and I agree. The slop too, best place to get angry and argue at a brick wall. Truly like no other. The worst of the worst reactionary bullshit gets put up there, where do they find that stuff? The badposting too, the absolute worst quality, like, impressively bad. They must really have monkey's with typewriters for posts that bad. Hexbear is truly the best instance, Hexbear of America, I like the sound of that

Dems gonna control the majority in my State legislature. Absolute bluenami(My state passed one of the transphobic measures btw)
(I'm just trying to get the thread past 1400 comments)
seeing libs saying "im gonna tell my reps to codify abortion rights"
obama promised to do that in his original campaign and had democrat supermajority for 8 years
and he spent it bombing children
The trick is to give them everything they want from you and then pressure them once in office with the leverage you just gave up. It's a perfect plan.
Every friend group got that one elderly Marxist making a list of everyone libbing out on Stories for future prosecution

Anyone else notice Charlie Kirk has been suspiciously quiet about all this
1366 comments in 2 days, seems that the US electoral theatre is hot topic
Fuck. It looks like AP just called the race for I-638 in Washington state, i.e. the anti-trans bill.
Even if it gets overturned by the courts, the voting result is very fucking distressing to me, and speaks to how rampant transphobia is in blue states if they felt comfortable enough to call the race with 1/3 of the ballots outstanding in a deep blue state.
I know some people will harp on how a lot of those who voted yes are profoundly ignorant and couldn't be assed to do any kind of research and will be horrified when they realize it will affect their own cis daughters (if allowed to see the light of day). And that's true.
But the way the initiative was presented to voters made it pretty clear that it was a transphobic bill.
Idk I just think it speaks to the "fuck you, I've got mine" mentality that many cis-liberals and faux-leftists have.
I've never been more convinced that a disturbing number of these people would vote yes on an initiative that gave them free health care and college if the same initiative also promised to institutionalize all trans people.
JD Vance is blaming the Iran War for the loss. Shocking, as we all know it's impossible for a VP to distance themselves in any way from an unpopular administration.
Very likely he still goes down with the administration, but people are dumb as shit so who knows. Bush ran saying he'd be very reluctant to commit troops in nation building, then invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. Trump distanced himself from those wars and then attacked Iran. Now Vance is trying to distance himself from Iran
Folks, I've already commented on how Talarico is the Portuguese word for "guy who has sex with another guy's wife", but a crucial piece of information I had overlooked has come to my attention just now and I must share it.
The previous sitting senator whose seat is now being taken over by Talarico is called John Cornyn. Cornyn sounds just like "corninho", which would be the Portuguese word for "little cuck". Folks, you heard it here first; the little cuck's senate seat is being taken over by the guy who has sex with married women.
From now on, all of you should consult with me or any of the other Brazilians on Hexbear before taking any kind of political action, because clearly the Brazilluminati are in control and we have a very immature sense of humor. You have been warned.
my take on this election is workers across america are developing class consciousness. It is our job to prod open-minded people into socialist consciousness, and delineate what socialism ACTUALLY means (how we will overcome capitalism)
So I had this brilliant idea to start an online campaign to ban cisgender people from public bathrooms and sports. The ads would be super scary and highlight real statistics showing how cisgender people are more likely to do certain terrible crimes or other stuff.
Thoughts? Anyone have ideas to add to this? What if you could even somehow get anti-cisgender proposals on ballots in some places? Imagine how funny it would be for the cis to ban themselves from public life.
Briefly checked out Fox News and their latest line is that the Republicans only lost because of gas prices and the economy.
That because all these anti-trans bills have passed actually the American public has rejected woke and conservatives are winning if they can just fix the economic messaging.
Now liberals will say this is cope but they have a point. A lot of this was just people voting for the other party because the one in power put them in some economic pain. It signals absolutely nothing of a genuine progressive/left movement in the American body politic.
So expect to continue to see hammering against vague "wokeness" by corporations, reactionary commentators, etc. They can smell blood in the water and it's the one angle of attack still succeeding so they're going to push it full throttle ahead.
Republicans only lost by failing at their job of running a functioning country
But yeah the transphobic ballot measures paint a pretty grim picture

Even if you don't care about electoralism, it's good and cool that chuds are losing collective millions on polymarket
The fact that people voted blue and then for genital inspections and transphobia is so sad man.

Population density map for comparison

I can't believe the people of Alaska didn't vote. Do they want Trump to win?
Lol, what people?
And i'm only half joking. Alaska is basically almost entirely empty:

Wow, I just found out that if Alaska was an independent country, it would be the least densely populated country on Earth, having about 0.5 people for km^2^. It would be the 15th largest country by land area (just ahead of Iran) but would rank 159th in total population.
"Call to agitprop. Mods please pin.
Alabama elected a trans woman to state senate.
Alabama elected a trans woman to state senate.
Alabama elected a trans woman to state senate.
Hammer this narrative, don't give the pro-centrism narratives any space to breathe or grow."
What's the stupidest take you're heard from libs locally about this blue wave? A fundraising staffer for a local nonprofit told me this morning that he doesn't think disowning MAGA friends and family was effective or responsible for this large swing. I had to very politely tell him I think anti partisanship is exactly what attributed to this big win and Democrats will lose majority just as fast if they don't satisfy their constituents.
California proving once again that there is no amount of boot we won't lick. Not only are we rejecting prop 40 we're voting yes on prop 42 which makes it against the state constitution to go after billionaire wealth at all.
If democrats handle the AI bubble pop well, it could solidify their leadership for a generation. So I expect they'll make it worse.
Tide chuds in, tide libs out. You can't explain that.
2027 Blueeee Waveeeee Predictions 🏄♀️🗽
ICE: "Needs more funding so it can be reformed"
Iran War: "End the war - but without giving in to Iranian demands and Iran can never have a nuke"
Israeli Genocide: "No more free offensive weapons shipments - Israel must pay their own way. Defensive weapons (Iron Dome, 2,000 lb bombs, white phosphorus) must continue."
Trans Rights: "No"
Climate Change: "Protect oil and gas jobs while reinstating tax credits for Teslas"
Minimum Wage Raise: "We had to remove this via amendment to ensure that the tariff reform bill passes. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good!"
Student Loan Forgiveness: "No"
Libs out here saying: "Every vote counts".
Actually, unless the race is tied, it doesn't matter if you voted or not.
"But this one race for example (wasn't on your ballot) was extremely close! only 30 votes on a statewide race!"
mhmm, so it still wouldn't matter if I voted unless i could cast 30 ballots in the same election.
pointing this out in the girldinnerdiaries threads where people are dumping their boyfriends over not voting is not well received.
It looks like the California prop 38 is written by a small 3-person nonprofit and it gives $4.2 billion (!!) to that nonprofit. It is likely to pass. A very smart move, why haven't more people tried that.
The lady who won over the chud Halo composer tweeted him a video of the halo theme with a bit of text that said "The fight is finished".
Heh
What if we replace one warmongering Zionazi fascist with another?
https://t.me/presstv/213478 According to CBS, Donald Trump has reportedly consulted with his advisers regarding the removal of Pete Hegset, Following the Republican Party's defeats in the midterm elections.
Meanwhile, sources have named Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis as a potential replacement for Hegseth.
PSL candidate review:
Greg Levy, Ohio Senate: 2.1%, 94,501 votes. Greg is a full-time mover.
Joe Tache, Massachusetts Senate: 2.2%, 48,869 votes. Joe is a full-time youth educator.
Andre Easton, New York 15th House District: 8.7%, 10,647 votes. Andre is a full-time English and special education teacher.
Three Black communist workers garnered a combined 154k votes on explicitly revolutionary and anti-imperialist politics. In 2024, our presidential campaign got 167k votes across the entire country, heavily concentrated in California with 72k votes and 0.4% of the vote just there, the highest vote share for the party ever, by a wide margin, up to that point. And now, Ohio alone has picked up more than half that and we obliterated all of our percentage performances from before. This is a MASSIVE growth for the party. If we had a Euro-style parliament, this would be where we picked up our first few seats in the national legislature. I've seen hundreds of comrades in Ohio working themselves to the bone knocking doors, going to events, building relationships, and arguing for socialism all over the state for the last month. We fought hard for these results, raised our profile, advanced socialist politics, deepened all of the fundamental skills of organizing, and brought thousands of people into some form of socialist political action.
A long way to go, but we are accelerating! The Dems impending enormous failure over the next two years will further propel us and we can build a true working-class vanguard party.

Senator Elect Abdul El-Sayed Addresses The Israel Lobby & Condemns Genocide In His Victory Speech
He thanked AIPAC for the opportunity to beat them twice, after they just spent $46 million trying to beat him.
Israel really fucked up in pushing the war on Iran. Anecdotally, GOP voters I see online and IRL are PISSED at Trump because they think the GOP lost entirely and only because of Iran and most of them are (correctly) connecting it to Israel. I think you are going to see support for Israel among Republicans drop significantly after this; they already lost Dem voters. To a certain extent it doesn’t matter what the American people think of the Zionist entity, they just need the rich and powerful on their side. But it sure doesn’t help.
Edit: unrelated but I am gonna binge Mike from PA and Hasan today because I didn’t get to see much of the Fox News hogs squeal, and that is just so incredibly satisfying to watch.
