Crude has climbed back toward $110, but the bigger problem may be further down the supply chain. Tight diesel inventories, refinery disruptions and changing trade routes are forcing Western governments to balance energy security against sanctions, affordability and supply.

Keep going small line! I need to see that go past the $150 barrier! We need oil to be so expensive that the green transition is forced upon everyone; because apparently, it's the only way.

It comes with the bonus of making every fascist asshole in the world defending the oil industry to actually suffer for their choices.

Yup, this is one line that I'll always enjoy when it goes up.

[–] demonsword@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Oil isn't used only for transportation, you know. Fertilizers. Plastics. Paints. Medicine. All kinds of stuff depends on it too. The oil insdustry is obscenely rich and can weather this storm just fine, "we the people" will be the ones suffering with high inflation

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Sure, but that’s not gonna change either. Is anything, more people switching to EV or less fuel intensive transportation (including the trucking industry), then oil drops in price and those other uses also drop in price.

Which is the more reason to stop using it as fuel. The moment you drop oil as a fuel, oil demand will go down by a lot and, with that, prices, making all the products from oil that are not fuel cheaper.

So yeah, keep going up, little line. We need oil at ridiculous high prices to force the green transition.

[–] turmacar@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Which is why it's important to transition to more of a focus making those things with it instead of just burning it as fuel.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah I'd like that to be drastically restructured as well. Get off the petrochemical teat completely.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Who would have thought that trump and putin would be the unwilling force that makes the world go green.

[–] Joeffect@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I mean hes put a lot of effort into destroying any progress we have had with non oil energy...

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Oil shipping cost of Mideast oil is over $40 a barrel. Add that in.

[–] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 85 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's almost like basing your entire energy economy on a limited resource is a bad idea? But no, that couldn't be it.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 56 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Before trump we were doing ok on transitioning to wind and solar. Petroleum would have been ok for at least a few more decades if this republican administration hadn't started yet another war in the middle east and tanked the economy. Like they always do, but this time accompanied by lots of brazen theft.

[–] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Petroleum would have been ok for at least a few more decades

If you don't count the climate change of it all, maybe. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to be net zero by 2050.

[–] Ohmmy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

It's 2050 now? I remember it being 2030. With us passing 1.5 degrees already I feel like we're locking in at least 3 degrees of warming by 2050.

[–] benjirenji@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

The 'no efforts' scenario is around 3.5°C but I don't know if AI craze is already accounted for.

yes, they keep pushing the date back when it becomes clear that we aren't gonna make it.

Turns out Drumpf is the best advocate for renewables and he didn't even mean to be.

The one time solar power could have had a clean win

[–] ElChinchilla@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

What. You want me to believe there is a giant ball of energy out there that simply powers the entire planet's years worth of energy every 9 seconds? /s 'cuz ^ that's real.

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trump unwittingly did more for the transition away from fossil fuels than any previous president

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

This morning I just heard they’re trying to shut down one of our offshore wind farms again - we managed to push it through Drump’s interference and it’s been producing power yet they’re trying yet again

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (3 children)

No shit...

The Russian deal is literally just till the election, Trump's doing everything possible to hide reality from voters, but it's not gonna be enough.

Republicans just won't turnout for this election, or likely the next one.

They're an obstruction party, so actually having control is like a dog catching a mail truck...

There's nothing for them to do, so they give up. It's only fun when they're trying to catch it, not after they catch it.

Progressives on the other hand get more motivated the more they win, without neoliberals sandbagging the DNC were most likely at the beginning of a generational snowball.

[–] nope@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Republicans just won’t turnout for this election, or likely the next one.

Please don't assume this! Like people assumed Hillary would suuuurely win over the joke of a candidate that Trump was in 2016.

Go and vote!

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Like people assumed Hillary would suuuurely win over the joke of a candidate that Trump was in 2016.

That was only people not paying attention, and people who thought repeating something enough would make it true.

Go and vote!

Everyone should always vote.

Being informed and voting is better, and you don't need to say "go vote" every time an election is brought up, especially not in online forums devoted to politics.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

you don’t need to say “go vote” every time

Yes, please do. While Lemmy-Americans seem likely to vote, and to vote against fascism, it’s taking things for granted that lose elections

This time around it’s extra-important. Too many people only vote in presidential elections and skip the years without. However it’s critical to put the brakes on fascism. Everyone needs to vote

They’re an obstruction party, so actually having control is like a dog catching a mail truck…

I would normally agree, but this time around the Republicans really went as far as they could in the direction of enshittification. I can barely recognize the same country of ten years ago!

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Because the only other option was Biden and he kept making shit even shittier...

The neoliberals shuffling his corpse around no longer have control of the national party, and are losing the states they still control.

That problem was solved already, people are getting things to vote for, and we're already seeing it payoff all over. It's not gonna change unless oligarchs convince people that voting is useless when it matters now more than ever: because voters are picking candidates instead of the party.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

There is no Russian deal. No Russian diesel will ever be shipped to the US, at least not directly or as part of any specific deal. Trump just did the populist thing and told people a lie they wanted to hear.

[–] TheFrirish@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Thank you President Donald J. Trump for being the biggest proponent of green energy !

It turns out, all green energy needed for success was to sandbag the other team with a proponent so incompetent that his best efforts to keep oil ahead of the falling costs of solar utterly destroys the world energy order, allowing solar to fill the void!

[–] faethon@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

That might actually be at least a positive thing coming out of this timeline's disasters..

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yep I've been calling this for a while, last chance to get an EV while they're cheap! If anyone has any questions about electric vehicles, feel free to ask me, I've owned one for 2 years now.

[–] Slowy@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Are there any without data collection and overengineered bloatware ?

[–] DespairSquid@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I took a single fuse out of my 2023 chevy bolt and it disabled all that shit. There’s an onstar module behind the infotainment screen that appears to be pretty easy to disable if you want to keep gps and thus location-based charging active. I personally don’t care about that, so fuse was plenty.

It’s also just a very basic vehicle overall, with physical buttons for most stuff (so touchscreen doesn’t get used much while driving), which I like coming from a 2012 honda civic. The only real modern thing it seems to have other than infotainment is the backup camera, and that’s a decade old requirement already.

Also, if it matters to you, chevy bolt runs on open source software. You can audit it right on your dash panel, if you so choose.

Edit: looks like there’s a fork of openpilot for it as well for mostly self-driving? Idk if I’d trust that, but kinda neat. I thought it was a fork of the OS, but its not.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Look into SLATE, they claim its data collection free and its a optional add-on for fleet vehicles.

I am getting one in January and hoping KIA will buy back their overpriced living-room on wheels. EV9.

[–] Zulu@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Isn't slate owned/backed or managed in some form by jeff bezos?

Obviously, if the product is good and doesnt track you then that's great, but obvious skepticism would be warranted.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

He gave in the initial round of funding. AFAIK he has no input and isn't even on the board.

[–] magnue@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Any stellantis car. To be clear they have both data collection and bloatware, it's just so poorly made it doesn't work so no worries.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Probably an older Nissan Leaf, or start a company that produces one.

Only reason it went down is because china halved their oil consumption

[–] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It went down because this admin drained the US oil reserve to keep prices low by artificially increasing the supply. But it's run dry now

[–] thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In for a shit show when the wells dry up

[–] ElChinchilla@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

It's renewable, you only need to wait like 100 million years or something.

Those are rookie numbers! Time to pump those numbers up!

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Nice cluster fuck that Trump did to help his masters in Moscow. Also insider trading, congrats to Trump and his crime family.

Who cares how many normal people(who don't matter) have died in all this?

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The EU started to get serious in 2022 at the latest. The firsr results of that can be already seen. The resilience to fossile fuel prices is much higher then the US'. There is a lot more to do, though.

[–] magnue@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

The cost of transporting the oil is more alarming to me.
