Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I recently started selling some of my old stuff online and regret all the boxes I've thrown away.
Keep them.

[–] FisicoDelirante@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 hours ago

Literally my couch table. Not throwing it away for any reason

[–] IamMoonPie@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

Say that to my cats face… I dare you.

[–] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

But what if I have to RMA my graphics card 6 years after I bought it?!

[–] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 2 points 5 hours ago

Warranty? No what if I have to go somewhere with just the 6 year old GPU, I want to keep the formfitting box so it doesn't get damaged. Have I ever gone somewhere with just the GPU? Once. But you never know if you need to do it again!

[–] cardfire@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 hours ago

Over my dead body.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 hours ago

You say that, but as soon as it's gone I'll need it.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 hours ago

False.

I move fairly frequently so they're useful for that, and cardboard boxes + basic engineering knowledge = modular shelving.

I currently have a ~2ft x ~1ft x ~1ft box, filled with many old personal pizza boxes, for structural reinforcement.

Now I don't need to crane my neck to look at my TV.

Recycling.

I use* them for print & play games and costumes! You can take them out of my cold dead hands 😾

*once or twice a year

[–] degen@midwest.social 6 points 6 hours ago

I just got a new mouse and it came in one of those really sturdy boxes like a phone would come in. I literally put it next to the other boxes I've been hanging on to, just sitting on my dresser...

YOU CAN'T MAKE ME

[–] teslekova@lemmy.ml 6 points 6 hours ago

Fuck you it's my nightstand.

[–] TrenchcoatFullofBats@belfry.rip 7 points 7 hours ago

If you're neurodivergent and also sell on eBay, you can justify a BoxLibrary and enter all of those nice FREE boxes into a self-hosted open source inventory management program that also lets you easily print qr code labels that you can tape to each flattened box (sorted by size, obviously) that you can easily scan to take that box out of inventory when you use it to ship stuff.

And then you can buy new boxes anyway because BoxLibrary is too far away (in the garage) because your partner didn't want all of those lovely boxes in the house, but you can't stop adding to it now, because it's infrastructure and also, hey, that's a nice box - I'm gonna keep that, because I might need it later.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 15 points 9 hours ago

But our cats do!!

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

I may not need the box, but Emily does!

[–] LazyOldPervert@lemmus.org 10 points 10 hours ago

Literally cane in to say I know I don't but my cat likes them 🤣

[–] moakley@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago

This but it's my kids instead of the cat, and the box is decorated with crayon to resemble the palace from Aladdin.

Not my masturbating boxes!

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 5 points 8 hours ago

You can pry them from my cold dead hands!

[–] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 18 points 11 hours ago

Which cardboard box? I have several*

*this is an understatement.

[–] Ertain@feddit.online 5 points 9 hours ago

No! I'm going to need it one of these days. For instance, I'm selling stuff on eBay. I'll get around to selling that stuff. Eventually. And I'll need that cardboard box!

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 7 hours ago

To quote the AVGN: Don't you talk about my boxes! I like boxes!

[–] Juniper@piefed.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

My cardboard box collection has saved me countless dollars over all the moves I have made as an adult. I average a move every 1.6 years

[–] DrPop@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

The only cardboard box i keep is the one my Christmas tree is in. Then again outta now tape than box at this point.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 34 points 14 hours ago

You don't understand. On no less then two occasions in my life, I needed a nice sized cardboard box and had to make due with taping together scraps, like an animal

Now I have three nice intact big cardboard boxes. You want me to throw away such riches?

Madness.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 44 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

But what if i want to return the product that i bought 10 years ago, then i'll need the original box it came in

[–] key95@lemmy.world 19 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Resale value goes way up in its original box

[–] vorpuni@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 2 points 9 hours ago

Yup, I'm sure the person thrifting some of my donations loves to make more on eBay.

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

Fuck I have a shelf full of empty 3d printer filament boxes. But what if I will need them one day. I swaer I am neurotypical.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

But what if i need to use the cardboard to store something?

usually you can find a better thing to store it in, unless you're shipping an item.

[–] plateee@piefed.social 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Sure, I have no plans to move anytime in the next decade, but my 5 year old 50" TV might need to be packed perfectly with all the Styrofoam just in case.

[–] dunyol@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 8 hours ago

I struggle with this but I’ve reached the point where the times I need a shipping cardboard box (e.g. from an online order) are very much null.

The boxes in which, say, my TV, monitor, and computer case (and other components like the gpu) came in are tucked away though, for when the time comes to move to a new place.

[–] galoisghost@aussie.zone 17 points 14 hours ago

Lucky for me I’ve never been diagnosed as neurodivergent. So I can keep all my boxes

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 7 points 12 hours ago

Thanks for reminding me to ask for my nice cardboard boxes back from my friend after helping her move a bit ago

They're old paper boxes and they have handles and lids, they're great for organization

[–] teri@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 10 hours ago

i throw them away with lot of inner resistance and time passing because there could potentially be a use for them - a i neurodivergent?

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 1 points 8 hours ago

Mfer never heard of an objet d'art

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 14 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

nono you see I can turn it into a bedside table

[–] TaTTe@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I feel accused of using a cardboard box "temporarily" as my bedside table for 4 years D:

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Mines going on a year now.

I used the box for my microwave as a side table for my work laptop/dock/phone during covid work from home (for like a year and a half, until I quit)

But like, it's nice and flat but reassemleable so it doesn't take up any space, but if I need it for organising stuff later and it makes no negative consequence to my current being now and, just, you know TT

[–] python@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

anyone got the original photo for that picture of the horse in the suit? (pls pls pls don't let it be ai slop omg)

[–] maya_s_trojan@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 13 hours ago

you're not my dad you cant tell me what to do

[–] GottaHaveFaith@fedia.io 8 points 15 hours ago

Not true, I can put waste paper in it to throw away. Oh no I missed collection day! Guess I'm gonna accumulate some more until next week, I just need another cardboard box...

[–] LwL@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

Which of the 20?

[–] RaoulDuke25@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 14 hours ago

It's too big for the trashcan and it'll take me a while to procrastinate breaking the box down.
