Well, RIP Minecraft. Probably worth getting backups of your favorite versions.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (3 children)

As though it hadn't been a hollow shell for the last decade or so anyway.

Tbh not sure i agree. Started a lore-playing server with friends in 2012. It grew to over 200 unique players and rich DnD style growing history. Minecraft entered its dark period after the purchase but in the last few years has given players plenty of steady updates that are bringing us back and keeping our lore playing server thriving.

Ive seen more innovations in Minecraft in 5 years than I've seen in pokemon in 20, to put it into perspective. Love both series.

Now that sounds like a fun server! Really enjoyed an old RP server back in the days. RIP Lords of Minecraft, forever missed.

Tbh growing up on Minecraft has kinda tainted the entire MMO genre for me. So many servers had evolving stories, past events told through both word of mouth and the "official" records. You could join and make a real impact on the world. Tried an MMO for the first time with a friend and was like "couldn't this have been a single player game with how little multiplayer matters?"

RIP Minecraft happened when Notch sold out to Microsoft in the first place.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I wonder if he still would've still been a fascist, sexist, homophobic Nazi piece of shit if he wouldn't have sold.

[–] M137@lemmy.today 8 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Do you think he became those things after he sold it? Like some magic trick where the very second it happened he became a bad person. No, he was surely those things before, just hadn't shown it publicity.

[–] tiochungo@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

yeah, he was not rich enough to show his fascism

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

I do think there's a possibility of power going to people's heads, allowing people to run in idea-reinforcing circles, and eliminating doubt of competing worldviews.

Minecraft is so easy to pirate.

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

Its the most purchased game in the world, do you think there is after the full release that isnt backed up a couple hundred times?

But if you want, i would recommend 1.7.9, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, and 1.19.4 since those are the most modded versions of minecraft as far as i know (1.7 and 1.12 being mostly tech modpacks)

[–] Oka@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

1.21.1, and 26.2 if you want further content. Java, BTW. No sane person uses Bedrock.

When you shoot yourself in the foot you are supposed to use a pistol, not a mini gun

You must've read my mind. Came here to say this exact thing

[–] defrostedLasagna4921@piefed.zip 33 points 1 week ago

I already had a feeling Minecraft was going down, especially with the Microslop account requirement.

[–] cosmos8188@leminal.space 32 points 1 week ago

Looks like it's Luantis time to shine

Angelidou-Smith is no stranger to positions like this, but more in social media than video games. From 2014 to 2022, she was with Meta, looking after various aspects of Facebook, firstly in app monetization, and then in the realm of Facebook Groups, Dating and the like. Then, after stints in other industries, she took on the job of chief product officer at Reddit in November of last year. And now she's in charge of Minecraft.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 1 week ago (1 children)

because we all know how good Facebook dating and reddit are

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Especially during those specific periods. Jeez.

[–] Amuro_eat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 1 week ago

So it’s dead

[–] kugmo@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 week ago

Well people will mod whatever the final version will be, that's a plus.

[–] Mucki@feddit.org 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] grahamja@reddthat.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I started playing a few weeks ago, it is a lot of fun! I cheated a little though, game is a little brutal at first.

[–] Mucki@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

It's realistic. Some day, when you feel like it, try setting to hard mode and switch on collapsing caves and blocks falling sideways, one life only. It's hilarious how often and quickly you die if you don't focus. There's a mod for blood trails, that helps for hunting. I am currently in the middle of a hard winter, it's super tough! But have some nice shader settings, so looks cool while suffering haha

Wish l could get into it like minecraft but I just run out of stuff that I feel like doing, the smithing is pretty fun too and the world is definitely intriguing. Maybe when it's more finished I'll stay longer but it's got a way to go to catch up with the mods and stuff that minceraft has.

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Well, I still play on 1.20.1 and 1.21.1. Nothing that's happened in the last 5 years of Minecraft "development" has mattered to me.

Shame about how Mojang was bankrupted tho

[–] beneeney@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Only 1.7.10 here. Specifically.... GTNH. :')

Creeper is appropriate.

Last two paragraphs are the only thing of value in that whole article:

If you're somewhat cynical of this move, I don't blame you. This certainly looks like Microsoft's targeted someone who's more concerned about user retention, advertising, and monetization than community moderation and access.

Minecraft is a juggernaut that's resisted many of the more concerning practices you can find in something like Roblox. There's no explicit suggestion Microsoft wants to push that direction, but this changeover leaves the possibility open. We'll see what the future holds

[–] Solrac@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Time to move to Luanti, isn't it

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago
[–] myyass@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Great. Microslop doing this while announcing they'll be making movies. With how competent they are, brace yourself for the movie "Mein Kampf."

[–] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Play Luanti or Vintage Story

Fuck Microslop
