A new division called Xbox XP will take the lead on "film and television, consumer products, strategic partnerships, and live experiences," with a focus "on how people experience our franchises beyond the games themselves."

Sigh....

I don't think movies don't bring in as much ~~money~~ attention as they used to.

I haven't been in a theatre in years, I can't be bothered to watch most movies anyway, most are boring, I guess the writers strike really had a bigger effect than anticipated.

I actually haven't even finished, took 4 attempts and gave up, project hail mary even though a lot of people liked it. And as It's implied, I couldn't finish it even sitting at my desk with it being free.

That's not really enshittification, is it...?

Wow, so, Nintendo is winning the console war by suicide? Sony jumped off the console cliff out of nowhere, and now Xbox is eating a rat poison cake for fun.

Still standing : the indie scene, the PC gaming master race, the retrogaming scene, Nintendon't.

I hope Valve won't die by autoerotic asphyxia. I don't like them THAT MUCH (like, Newel is building cunt yachts instead of funding cool studios for cool new games), but they're still on the good side of history.

We'll still have GOG, though.

[–] afaix@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

GOG tried to kill itself with the Nazi symbols sent in emails, that they never really apologized for. They are lucky people have short memories.

Yeah, you don’t put two of the same runes that spell S together. And they didn’t even use runes, they used the greek symbol that looks like a lightning bolt, so that isn’t a valid excuse and could only have been chosen on purpose. And also they knew what they were doing would trigger people since they removed it from German newsletter

[–] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

PC gaming might be standing but it's costing an arm and a leg to do so.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago (3 children)

At least with PC gaming it's possible to buy an old computer or laptop and have a massive library. It's not like we're restricted to the current generation, I could go and play Wasteland on my modern PC with no issue if I wanted to install a couple megabytes.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That works on console too. The old machines and games (mostly) all still exist.

[–] ragas@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but on PC you get huge amounts of new games too, even if your machune is 15 years old.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Also if you've got old hardware you can still play the new games, just at much lower settings.

If you've got a PS4 you can't just play PS5 games at lower settings.

Well when I was saying older my brain was thinking decades older like 06, because I'm a Redneck with access to Linux and will see how well it works. Usually it's surprisingly functional even if I do have to get some weird ass RAM to do mild upgrades, you'd be surprised how many things used to run on 1GB.

I just picked up a refurbished workstation for $200 to stream my main pc to the living room via Steam. Works like a charm 😎

It’s running Cachy OS and can play some light-weight titles by itself too.

As someone who has been around since the third console generation (NES, SMS), honestly I feel like we are living in one of the worst eras in gaming history, second only to the crash of '83 (but I wasn't there for that so I can't confirm).

It really sucks that Nintendo is winning the console wars. Between suing their fans for making their games better, and them being seemingly unable to release a console that can keep up with modern performance standards (The Switch 2 only has 1500 shader cores FFS; modern midrange GPUs have 10,000+!), I wish literally anyone else was on top.

I mean I'm not in this fight—my last console was the 360—and I've been PC exclusive since, but still, we need healthy competition or things are only going to get worse for gamers.

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The Switch 2 is a handheld. I don't get why people expect it to be on par with home platforms, it's competition is the Steam Deck.

There’s no sense in selling a loss-leader computer/console when the losses are soooooo massive these days because of component shortages caused by billionaire hoarders.

[–] Ep1cFac3pa1m@lemmy.world 133 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I could understand doing this if your brand was thriving, but this just feels like trying to squeeze money out of a sinking business instead of fixing the problems that are sinking it.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 82 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

Their C-suites are in panic and know fuck all about games but they probably have seen one or two movies and have heard of Netflix. They probably proposed this because it‘s the only thing that makes sense to them in a foreign world that confuses them. It can only fail and will likely churn out AI slop nobody wants to watch.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 33 points 2 days ago

People making the decisions are removed from how work gets done, how users engage with the product, and any real consequences. But they keep most the profits despite contributing minimally.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They may also think Disney or Skydance will buy them and theyll get to sail out the window on their golden parachutes.

[–] breadsanta@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

C suite execs and defenestration... you may be onto something!

[–] Zexks@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

This right here. Hype up some ip then sell out and retire

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 7 points 2 days ago

This could provide some benefit if that wasn't a metaphor.

You have to remember that literally none of the executives making these decisions play video games. Or any games. They literally can’t fundamentally understand that playing a game that you don’t win is still fun, because they are toxic narcissists.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 18 points 2 days ago

I'm pretty sure they're in liquidation mode right now. Everything at Microsoft is being sacrificed on the altar of AI

Microsoft getting into the movie biz when many are no longer watching movies. Genius! Those who watch the Microsoft movies...will they need to purchase new hardware? /s

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

won't be able to afford the next-gen consoles anyway.

[–] paraproto@szmer.info 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Then they will not release movies to get tax breaks. Bunch of geniuses.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Next for release: Master Chief vs Acme Corporation

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 64 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Oh, yeah, this will work. Why didn't anyone else think of this?

/s

[–] Ashiette@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They should make Uwe Boll head of that department.

Moar Master Chief ASS! That's what gamers really want!

[–] deadcream@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 days ago

Someone at Microsoft is really mad that it was Amazon who profited from Fallout tv show.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I saw a post on blusky that summarized it: Microsoft never wanted to consolidate studios. They wanted to consolidate IP.

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That was always the case. Nobody cares about workers from other companies. There is a reason why people fear for their jobs in buyouts/mergers.

Xbox now has some of the best IP in gaming.

[–] very_well_lost@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think they've really underestimated just how little consumers care about IP when the product attached to it is trash.

20 years ago, Halo was one of the most beloved gaming IPs. Now, after a decade of garbage, hardly anyone gives a shit about it.

[–] DonkeyStar@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Thought the thumbnail was Mia Khalifa for a second. “how people experience our franchises beyond the games themselves” indeed.

A brown woman with black hair

You: “is this a different brown person? Yes it must be”

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

C'mon man. She's not even in the glasses.

[–] holy_scroller@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Don't video game sales make magnitudes more money than movies. Sounds like a another brilliant Xbox move.

Now that everyone hates the IP, let’s ruin them further with movies

They are absolutely fucked

[–] eddanja@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Shame they can't repeat the success of the 360.

The bargain bins are full of once-great brands that haven't produced anything in decades, but will let any old cheap factory slap their name on a product for a few bucks.

This is basically the same thing, but with stories instead of hardware.

yeah this is bullshit move. copying PlayStation, which didn't even do great with films.

but i guess part of the reason is that since hardware prices keeping going up and up, they don't expect many ppl to buy future consoles or handhelds.

and movies/tv don't require audience to buy any hardware upgrades, for the most part.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I can't wait for XBox Live: The Movie!

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago

Xbox now owns the following franchises, among many others: Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty, The Outer Worlds, Wolfenstein, Doom... Those are just most of the important ones from recent acquisitions. Some already have movies or TV shows, but they can always make new ones for those too.
