Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

all the security theater in the world and you can literally just go in

(calling people slurs and separating by race is bad though, so while headline is funny, do be mindful)

[–] Impenetrouble2@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

School shooting the breeze.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah that's the problem with American "security." It's all theater no security. The TSA regularly fails to catch dangerous items in tests for example. They'd far rather violate every right you have under the pretense of safety than actually make you safe

nah fuck that, kids don't need this in their lives

I'm failing to see the humor

[–] i_ben_fine@midwest.social 10 points 2 weeks ago

it was funny right up until the headline ended

[–] krakloskewm@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm still seeing it.

The b2haviour is scary and absolutely appalling but also hilarious if you can appreciate the absurd morbidity of it.

Students at Rufus King International High School told a school resource officer that Jones was “using profane language, racial slurs, sexually derogatory statements and organizing students by race and gender in class,” according to a criminal complaint obtained by local outlet WISN.

Let the record show I don’t condone this but

She allegedly called one student “fat boy,” asked another student “if she wanted to be a stripper or a hooker,” and allegedly told two white students that “they were the type of people to start school shootings,” a 16-year-old boy told authorities.

Jones also allegedly asked if any students had a vape or weed because class was “so f***ing lame and annoying,” Fox6 News Milwaukee reported, citing the complaint.

Wait these were high schoolers? I can imagine getting away with this on younger kids but if this happened to me when I was 16 I'd be like "okay something here is not okay I need to go tell the principal about this".

[–] NinaPasadena@hexbear.net 30 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Seems like that did sorta happen. Student told a school resource officer(a literal cop). Eventually after 3 periods (~3hrs) the "teacher" was removed once the principal found out.

So did the cop wait hrs to tell the principal or did a student eventually do it themselves?

[–] CredibleBattery@hexbear.net 31 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

reason 1: the cop thought it was funny

reason 2: the cop was playing candy crush

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 16 points 2 weeks ago

‘I’m just going to let this funny shit play out while I eat donuts’ -most acceptable cop

You would need a tranq gun and the hannibal lecter wheel dolly to get me back in my high school five years after graduation

[–] EatMoreMacroplastics@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I think that's just a large regular wheel dolly combined with a straitjacket, a muzzle and some of the straps hospitals use to fixate patients.

Source: I've been Hannibal Lecter wheel dollied before, although i wasn't restrained.

But it's medical grade so it costs $100,000

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Is that like military grade, half the effectiveness 1000x the cost?

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah that John Mayer song is some bullshit

[–] sourquincelog@hexbear.net 44 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

She did the "hardhat, clipboard, and hi viz" equivalent of gaining access to restricted areas but for substitute teachers, which is apparently just "show up to a school looking like you don't want to be there"

[–] g_mer@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

bullying victims are allowed a little kid hate, as a treat

[–] CredibleBattery@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

you can really understand how child abuse is so rampant when the average mind thinks the solution for being frustrated is to just walk over to a school and take it out on some kids, you can see how casual the cruelty is too! just doing it cause ''you were bored'' or some nonchalant shit like that

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Far too many adults, some barely more than teenagers themselves, simply do not see children and teenagers as human beings worthy of the same basic respect as any of their social peers. Which is a very big problem. Children are still learning how to handle the human experience and need the most grace and patience and understanding of us all, and yet so often are the people in society extended the least of those things by the rest of us. We expect children to just swallow things we'd tell nearly every adult to never stand for.

'because she was bored' and 'hates kids'

girl, same

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 34 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

okay that's definitely a case of mental issues.. i don't think 21 years in prison is even remotely appropriate.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 40 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

She bullied kids for 3 hours. I don't know what the appropriate punishment is, but years of jail time just seems excessive.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 48 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

appropriate punishment is being bullied by kids back for 3 hours.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 47 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

So community service as an actual substitute teacher?

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

with no right (however diminished) of disciplining kids, but yes.

She is facing six felony charges, including one count of impersonating a public employee and five counts of exposing a child to harmful descriptions. If convicted, she could be sentenced to a maximum of 21 years in prison.
