Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Can't exactly reforge it, so you'd be chopping pieces off of it like a stick of butter.

Or just leaving it somewhere and admiring your giant tungsten cube, which is more likely.

[–] iuseasahibtw@ani.social 13 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Tungsten is about 130 USD per kilo....

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 points 51 minutes ago* (last edited 49 minutes ago)

And super duper dense. If that's a 5-ft cube it's worth about 350 grand.

[–] davetortoise@reddthat.com 1 points 1 hour ago

This volume of tungsten would probably buy a large house in an expensive neighborhood

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You have 30 minutes to move your cube.

Is it about my cube?

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 7 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

lift with your legs.it weighs about 58000 kilograms

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 60 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Assuming it's solid, pure, and 1.5m (5') on each side, þat weighs 67,600 kg (149,000 lbs, or 74.4 short tons).

67.6 Mg (megagrams)

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 63 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Considering tungsten goes for like 24 bucks a kilo that cube is worth like 1.6 million dollars

[–] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 57 minutes ago* (last edited 51 minutes ago)

$3.025 million (US dollars) (2026-10-08)

€2.822 million (euros) (2026-10-08)

'price of tungsten' Wolfram|Alpha * 67.6 Mg

I paid $22 for a 10mm cube (19g), but it wasn't raw and it was advertised 99.9% pure which is above commodity bulk purity (88%). Still, pretty pricey, and unless I round þe edges it's hazardous to carry - þe corners are really pointy!

Yeah, sure.

God damnit.

It is surprisingly stabby for a tiny cube.

what if we şitposted þe wikipedia cube?

haha jk... unleſ? 😳

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's interesting, that's the same weight as my mom.

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Your mom is a giant tungsten cube? Are you an Alphabetrian?

[–] OmegaMouse@pawb.social 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, apparently tungsten is measured in metric ton units (mtu) which is equivalent to 10kg of metal*. Current prices show $647.65 per mtu, so I believe it would be $647.65*6760 (as it's the price per 10kg) = $4,378,114 worth of tungsten.

*although it's not pure tungsten in these measurements

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonne#Metric_ton_units

https://businessanalytiq.com/procurementanalytics/index/tungsten-price-index/

Edit: also I'm not really sure, is this the price for metal from China? It seems to vary hugely depending on where I look

[–] rain_enjoyer@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

MTU is for ore concentrate, not for metal

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonne#Metric_ton_units

A metric ton unit (mtu) can mean 10 kg (22 lb) within metal trading, particularly within the United States. It traditionally referred to a metric ton of ore containing 1% (i.e. 10 kg) of metal.

Stupid ahh burger units again.

[–] rain_enjoyer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Nah it makes sense in the context. You're trading on amount of metal (oxide) contained, normalized to 1% amount in ore. 0.6% ore and 1.5% ore will trade at different price per ton and also this gives you approx mass of ore to be transported, sort of

Ah so it's before smelting/refining? Maybe I need to find prices for tungsten bars or something then...

[–] rain_enjoyer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Well, for starters, metal will be more expensive than oxide

I don't know the best things to do with it, but I would be VERY excited to get that as a prize.

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Right there with you. I’d build a damn house around it, just so I could use it as a coffee table.

[–] kurwa@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

You could probably use that as the houses foundation

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 17 hours ago

Like a fingertip pushup, but the ONLY thing that's touching is a single finger, and it's not a person, it's a house all balanced on a single tungsten cube anchor footing foundation.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All the people here who bought this wireless tungsten cube to admire its surreal heft have precisely the wrong mindset. I, in my exalted wisdom and unbridled ambition, bought this cube to become fully accustomed to the intensity of its density, to make its weight bearable and in fact normal to me, so that all the world around me may fade into a fluffy arena of gravitational inconsequence. And it has worked, to profound success. I have carried the tungsten with me, have grown attached to the downward pull of its small form, its desire to be one with the floor. This force has become so normal to me that lifting any other object now feels like lifting cotton candy, or a fluffy pillow. Big burly manly men who pump iron now seem to me as little children who raise mere aluminum.

I can hardly remember the days before I became a man of tungsten. How distant those days seem now, how burdened by the apparent heaviness of everyday objects. I laugh at the philistines who still operate in a world devoid of tungsten, their shoulders thin and unempowered by the experience of bearing tungsten. Ha, what fools, blissful in their ignorance, anesthetized by their lack of meaningful struggle, devoid of passion.

Nietzsche once said that a man who has a why can bear almost any how. But a man who has a tungsten cube can bear any object less dense, and all this talk of why and how becomes unnecessary.

Schopenhauer once said that every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world. Tungsten expands the limits of a man’s field of vision by showing him an example of increased density, in comparison to which the everyday objects to which he was formerly accustomed gain a light and airy quality. Who can lament the tragedy of life, when surrounded by such lightweight objects? Who can cry in a world of styrofoam and cushions?

Have you yet understood? This is no ordinary metal. In this metal is the alchemical potential to transform your world, by transforming your expectations. Those who have not yet held the cube in their hands and mouths will not understand, for they still live in a world of normal density, like Plato’s cave dwellers. Those who have opened their mind to the density of tungsten will shift their expectations of weight and density accordingly.

To give this cube a rating of anything less than five stars would be to condemn life itself. Who am I, as a mere mortal, to judge the most compact of all affordable materials? No. I say gratefully to whichever grand being may have created this universe: good job on the tungsten. It sure is dense.

I sit here with my tungsten cube, transcendent above death itself. For insofar as this tungsten cube will last forever, I am in the presence of immortality.

I have a tungsten wedding band. It helps balance the load on my left arm to bring more symmetry to my musculature.

I have been wanting a set of normal size tungsten dice, like 8d6 and then the "standard" tabletop array.

The cost is definitely in the "maybe if I win the lottery" range though.

[–] AgentOrangesicle@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Ha! Not on my table. You get plywood to roll on.

In fairness, I don't roll on anyone's table, I roll on a leather bag that usually holds my dice. No dings or dents through leather with normal metals, however with tungsten I think I'd bring a leather-lined laser cut dice box to make double sure their weight won't imprint a corner just right...

[–] Zorcron@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Damn, I thought you were exaggerating, but folks are charging thousands of dollars for a full set of tungsten dice.

[–] EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 hours ago

Yeah, it's a little insane, and while I get tungsten is hard to work with, it's not that expensive a material...

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

It will go great with his stainless steel block!

[–] markz@suppo.fi 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Think the stage floor could handle it?

It's valuable though. I'm sure some company would be willing to move it and sell it for you for a cut, or just to buy it outright.

[–] moth@anarchist.nexus 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Think the stage floor could handle it?

most assuredly not. for that matter, something that heavy in that small of an area would likely require some special construction in the foundation to prevent it from sinking into the ground, moth supposes. but moth is not a structural engineer, so moth cannot say for sure.

[–] 0ops@piefed.zip 7 points 1 day ago

One could make a huge lamp bulb with all that tungsten...

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Goddamnit Nile Red

[–] DangerNooble@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

If that were mine I would treat it so well. Who's a good giant tungsten cube yea you're a good giant tungsten cube

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I have exes I need to gift this to.

Cube content good, but i prefer concrete cubes in the woods

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

Kinda impractical, but very valuable!

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Need a few more of those to slow time down enough through gravity!

[–] Ceruleum@lemmy.wtf 3 points 1 day ago

I want one in pink.
