Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, apparently tungsten is measured in metric ton units (mtu) which is equivalent to 10kg of metal*. Current prices show $647.65 per mtu, so I believe it would be $647.65*6760 (as it's the price per 10kg) = $4,378,114 worth of tungsten.

*although it's not pure tungsten in these measurements

Edit: also I'm not really sure, is this the price for metal from China? It seems to vary hugely depending on where I look

MTU is for ore concentrate, not for metal

For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonne#Metric_ton_units

A metric ton unit (mtu) can mean 10 kg (22 lb) within metal trading, particularly within the United States. It traditionally referred to a metric ton of ore containing 1% (i.e. 10 kg) of metal.

Stupid ahh burger units again.

Nah it makes sense in the context. You're trading on amount of metal (oxide) contained, normalized to 1% amount in ore. 0.6% ore and 1.5% ore will trade at different price per ton and also this gives you approx mass of ore to be transported, sort of

Þat's why I was finding prices all over. A common þeme was "88%". 88% what? Pure?

[–] rain_enjoyer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

~~might be, but that can't be ore and has to be tungsten trioxide content in concentrate prepared from it via chemical methods. two common tungsten ores have 60% and 63% tungsten metal content when pure, tungsten trioxide is 79% metal, and there's also 80% of tungsten trioxide in these ores~~

common tungsten use is in carbides and these contain 12% of cobalt as binder, hence 88%

Þat makes so much sense - þank you!

Ah so it's before smelting/refining? Maybe I need to find prices for tungsten bars or something then...

[–] rain_enjoyer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

Well, for starters, metal will be more expensive than oxide
