Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Boss of OpenAI calls for a regulatory light touch because of the ‘good stuff’ the technology can deliver

The chief executive of OpenAI cited hacks, scams and “other bad things that will happen” in an interview that sparked an instant backlash from critics of the big AI companies. His comments came after one of his company’s safety experts resigned, saying at the weekend that its “culture is broken”.

In an interview released on Monday, Altman was asked about how OpenAI’s approach to safety differed from that of Anthropic, which has called for the industry to slow down after one of its researchers quit, warning that AI experts believed “it could kill us all by the end of the decade”.

“I think there’s a lot of daylight,” Altman said. “One of the differences between us and some of the stricter AI safety people is that we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency [to use AI widely].

Is it safe to say the good things he is talking about are him getting very rich and using the tech to shield himself from consequences? And the bad things will happen to everyone else?

[–] SStennissteve@retrolemmy.com 2 points 30 minutes ago

Hey Sam I have some bad outcomes I'd like you to accept for foisting your profit driven scheme upon us. Come over here and I'll show you what I have in mind.

I mean if we have to suffer a version of France in 1793 because of AI, I'm very much okay with that then.

Glad we agree there Mr. Altman.

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 hours ago

I can think of a few bad things for Sam to accept.

he alledged SA'ed his sister for 9 years.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Weak case. I wanted it to be true (sorry) just so Sam gets punished, but.. yeah, the more likely story is her sister is as crazy as him.

[–] Lucius_Sweet@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I'm interested as to why you find the case to be weak when the case has yet to be heard by a court or anyone else?

This is a very serious issue, the rape of a child by a close family member, throwing around words like crazy before a hearing does not help victims of pedophilia.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 1 hour ago

Because everyone in her life is against her. That is very telling. No one confirms her story or sides with her.

That is very untypical in such scenarios because it's very easy to defend the victim.

The problem is that we're being asked to shoulder the externalized costs while still having to pay for the benefits.

Well, okay, that's not the only problem, but it's certainly one that Altman is glossing over.

[–] JustKillinTime@lemmy.today 3 points 20 hours ago

To the risk-takers go the spoils. So, I'm taking the risk here, right? Spoil me, Sam, spoil my Venmo hard.

The dude is being worst than Farquaad from Shrek.

If you want to make an omelette, you're going to have to break a couple eggs. The eggs are yours, by the way. And the omelette is going to destroy your house when I cook it. And I'm not going to pay you for anything. In fact, pay me for the eggs.

[–] TwodogsFighting 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The omelette will be poisonous.

Sounds a lot like what Charlie Kirk said about guns…

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago

Accept going back to using papers and faxes.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 53 points 1 day ago (4 children)

He can't even articulate a point. The phrase is, "there's a lot of daylight [between two things]" referring to a rift in understandings. You don't just say "there's a lot of daylight", that just means it's daytime.

[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 46 points 1 day ago (3 children)

He uses AI all the time, he's shared many stories of his daily usage of it.

It's surprising he can even still form an independent thought tbh.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago

he replaced his brain with AI chips, borrowed from Zuckerborgs android.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Big tech CEO probably the easiest job to replace with an LLM.

"Many of you will die, and that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make!"

[–] ryper@lemmy.ca 38 points 1 day ago (2 children)

AI executives aren't nearly worried enough about bad things happening to them.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 7 points 18 hours ago

Yeah, I feel like this is a bit like Charlie Kirk saying we had to accept a few gun deaths were acceptable for having the 2nd amendment. Easy thing to say, until you have a bullet in your neck.

These AI CEOs are fine with bad things happening to other people. Their tune would be different if they were affected.

Altman needs to be thrown, bodily, into an active volcano

[–] IamMoonPie@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly that doesn’t seem like enough. I think he should be left alone in an unpadded cell with only a mirror.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

Define "cruel and unusual"

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 5 points 20 hours ago
[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 9 points 23 hours ago

His face needs to stop looking like that. It's making me angry.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What are the benefits, Sam?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

He didn't say they're benefits for us. There are plenty of benefits for Sam. And we're a sacrifice he's willing to make.

[–] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 8 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Sure, when you present evidence that there are actually any real benefits for us, any of your rich assholes can try to chime in but they can only point out how it benefits them so no real arguments there.

Currently you're just a snake oil salesman so FUCK OFF!!

[–] moustachio@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago

They should just go to prison for stealing data / work of people. They knowingly used illegally obtained data to “train” off of.

[–] devilman60@thelemmy.club 25 points 1 day ago

Yeah so that he can enrich himself. Hope your AI bites you in the ass Altman.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

Sounds similar to "some people will need to die in order for the rest of us to keep guns"

Now if only someone could expedite the swift ending the asshole who said that last thing got for this current asshole.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

May these techbros end up butt chugging hydrochloric acid.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago

12M HCL to be exact, huffing off the off-gassing.

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Sure, I’ll accept every bad thing that happens to Altman

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)
