Install Linux, Problem Solved.

[–] borQue@lemmy.zip 3 points 16 hours ago

Yesterday my laptop updated Windows to 26H2. I never have touched a laptop so hot (while it was lying on the couch, standby! It would not boot anymore but after a few tries it finally booted, giving all sorts of warnings... Today it works normally again. Fuck Microsoft. Fuck them in their stupid faces. PLEASE Steinberg. Release Cubase for Linux.

[–] borQue@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 hours ago

It's goddamn operating system. The only fucking thing it needs to do is connect all the hardware on the motherboard with drivers. Drivers? The manufacturers of the hardware themselves can write those best. And then. Not any, and I repeat NOT ANY bloatware can justify it's own existance. Users select software, user selects drivers. Microscum nearly destroyed the digital world, let's thank them by abandoning that shitty OS all together yesterday.

As of a few days ago, Outlook Classic started shoving AI even harder down my throat at work. Aside from the usual, non-removable copilot button on the ribbon, they now have two new prompts right in your face:

That's 4 places to get copilot in one screen, 5 if you count the key combination they offer. I tried to get rid of these new ones, even as far as using GPOs, to no avail. I read a while back that the take-up on copilot had been much lower than they expected, so it seems that they're desperate to increase user engagement with it, hence pushing it at every possible opportunity.

I love how they keep announcing they will scale back AI but actually just continue forcing it on you.

Fuck microslop

[–] Jump365@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

They'll scale back data center investment. Not scale back user push

Oh I'm stealing this one.

Wait, wasn’t this the same update Microsoft just yesterday said was a “predictable and low-impact” one?

The peak-years Simpsons writer’s room couldn’t come up with a better punchline.

Why is the penguin sad in this picture? The Penguin is probably laughing its tail off at the moment.

[–] jode@pawb.social 8 points 1 day ago

I think buddy's more confused than sad.

[–] ClassyHatter@sopuli.xyz 51 points 2 days ago (1 children)

One just has to appreciate the amount of money Microsoft keeps spending to Linux advertisement.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right? If they had just kept windows as "fine" I probably would not have made the switch to Linux. Inertia is powerful. Now I'm full Linux time and have no regrets. Pop!_os with the kde desktop is fine

[–] decolo@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago

Another full Linux switcher, I am long time user for work but wouldn't have fully gotten rid of my personal windows desktop if they hadn't done this. Even better, my kids are learning Linux and even gaming on it. They lost generational lock-in for a few months of profit

[–] PetteriPano@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I've been living in Linux-land for the last 30 years, and I've never really believed my wife when she says that updates just break things and tries to avoid them to no end.

Why does Microsoft do that? It seems like it would be bad for business.

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You have been using Linux for the past 30 years but you are shocked that updates can break things? What?

[–] PetteriPano@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It happened once in the last ten years (thanks Nvidia). But I just rolled back to my previous btrfs snapshot and kept on computing until it was fixed a day or two later.

But forced breaking updates the first Tuesday of every month sounds like a really bad user experience.

Things were different back in the 90s before loadable kernel modules. Online updates weren't much of a thing, either. You'd just install that new slackware release over your old root partition anyway.

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So you do know about it? Also what about the first twenty?

[–] PetteriPano@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I have the memory of a goldfish with poor memory. I can't recall any other big breaks in the last 20. I'm sure there's been some since, but trivial enough to fix and forget about.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah no OS is immune to broken stuff. Sigh, I can't figure out how to fix my Linux phone after being dumb enough to try to install vs code for classes. Can't upgrade to the next version because of it.

[–] Jump365@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Man I want to switch so bad but there's games that I can't play on linux

[–] bertlewirth@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

If it’s anticheat, fuck those games off. Kernel level anti-cheat is essentially a rootkit. Fuck that.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

The way things are going on 11, you won't be able to play them there soon either.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Has microslop pushed out a single update for Windows 11 that didnt cause some kind of catastrophe in one way or another?

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Ah yes and they made this notification icon more annoying so you think there's updates but they just want to sucker you into early installation.

Well, for that it just got a few weeks of delay. And maybe later Linux install.

[–] ashurbanipal@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Once Windows 10 becomes obsolete I'll just switch to Linux.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Switch to Linux now. What's keeping you?

[–] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I still have windows on my work computer, it prompted me to install 26h2 yesterday, so I did. Immediately, windows explorer started showing buggy behavior. Win+tab flickers on and off repeatedly, explorer restarts itself... Fucking hell, and then they say AI code is good.

[–] axh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

To be honest, the Windows 11 code written by people is also terrible.

[–] Geldaran@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

So.... A normal Patch Tuesday?

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But they let you move the start bar again, so there is that at least.

[–] bertlewirth@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

Yeah they “let you”…… on the computer you own. Linux yo

[–] RonnyZittledong@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Of the around 8 computers in my house I am down to just a single Windows machine and every time I see an update queued I wonder just how much worse it will be after the update is applied. How many new bugs, reset settings and user hostile shit will I have to put up with this time.

[–] steelplatedmech@piefed.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Move to ltsc if you have to use Windows. You don't get the updates everyone else gets. Just security updates.

[–] Zedd_Prophecy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I second this - it's a whole world of better .. install with a few anti telemetry and anti-crap scripts.

[–] steelplatedmech@piefed.ca 1 points 19 hours ago

Any scripts you recommend?

[–] ReignOfTerror@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I hit the point a while ago of just setting my connection as metered so it doesn't download any updates. I know it's less secure, but I just want to use my computer and not spend hours fixing problems they create with every update.

[–] iturnedintoanewt@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I just install 10 LTSC on the computers I REALLY need windows on. The updates have no new features at this point, just security. I don't use it too much, but it's just less obnoxious than 11.

[–] MonsterTrick@piefed.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I forget that I have Windows on my computer which I can always dual-boot to. Linux just feels much smoother and not as sluggish in comparison despite copule of the kinks it has but that's more me being a Linux noob.

[–] Anti_Iridium@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

A friend bought me bf6 so I set up secure boot and windows 11 on another drive. Haven't booted to it since.

[–] Kushan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It installed fine on my machine yesterday as far as I can tell. Also seems no different to before.
