If they owned a tavern in downtown Moscow they were petite bourgeois, not peasants.

Peasant doesn't mean poor or commoner, it means being a farmer! Usually one that doesn't own the land they farm.

I think specially it means a farmer who is tied to a piece of land allocated to them by someone else.

In medieval times it was possible to be a very successful peasant if you were allocated a particularly good parcel of land, and could have enough excess income to invest in other ventures, but that was the exception not the norm.

Well, it pretty consistently means that the person is primarily sustaining themselves through growing crops. But the exact property relations will vary a lot by who, what, when, and where the term is being used.

I don't totally agree. I've always seen it used to refer to people who work land they themselves do not own, even if the specific relations between property owner and tenant has evolved over time. A farmer who owns the land they work is usually referred to as a Yeoman, or just a farmer, even if they are doing subsistence farming if they own the land they aren't a peasant.

That is one of these variations in the property relations in the definition. Usually yeomans are not considered peasants and peasants will be defined against them, but some will group them in to define them against another group (e.g. the urban buisness owners).

my great grandfather was but a simple peasant his entire life until the communists came and seized his banks, his crown, and the family scepter.
