Probably multiple times.

Maybe impeachment makes people feel better, but it practically does fuck all.

Every US impeachment in history ended in senate acquittal. It's bullshit for the simps.

(Dick Nixon was not impeached).

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago

Trump is the last one to go for:

  • Hegseth (Probably easiest to get momentum with)
  • Roberts, Alito and Blanche (Restablish rule of law)

Then Trump and Vance.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

To predict the future we must look at the past:

  • "Will the Jan 6 hearing recommend criminal charges for Trump?"
  • "No."
  • "Will Biden direct his AG to prosecute Trump."
  • "No. In fact the AG should be a republican!"
  • "Will democrats push Biden to get an AG who will prosecute Trump for Jan 6?"
  • "No."
  • "Will democrats push Biden to prosecute Trump for stealing and hoarding classified documents?"
  • "No."
  • "Will Biden revoke top security clearance of Trump election rigger and enemy saboteur Elon Musk for having secret meetings with V. Putin?"
  • "No. Let's tariff Chinese solar panels because solar panels are spies now."
  • "Will democrats stonewall the funding and creation of Trumps Nazi ICE army?"
  • "Thank you ICE!"
[–] slickgoat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

In a democracy Biden shouldn't attempt to influence any action against Trump. That's the job of the Justice Department. Trump has made political judicial activism so normal that people just expect this kind of political interference.

I would think they would automatically start the impeachment proceedings. If they don't, I think it answers the bigger question "Was there only one party all along? If so, is it the billionaire class that is steering the ship for us?".

[–] hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The capital class holds all the cards. Their wishes will be done regardless of which of the two parties has power.

They’re just the modern version of the ruling class. They’ve always dominated since the dawn of civilization. Socialist movements have attempted to overthrow the capital class with varying degrees of success.

There will always be a ruling class. I’d just prefer if it were the working class.

Message to Democrats: You better, that's what everyone is voting D for. Stop the madness, put safeguards in place to keep this from happening again.

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

problem is impeachment is toothless it seems

i thought the houses could pass laws on their own but apparently that's a supermajority as well so we're fucked for 2 years

maybe the states can defederate and make a difference

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

put safeguards in place to keep this from happening again.

What safeguards will work against decades of oligarch-controlled media putting out fascist propaganda? What safeguards can Democrats put in with a mere majority when it takes a supermajority to make real changes?

Most importantly, and I hate to say it: What would Democrats do even if they had a su permajority when establishment Democrats are content to suck at the teat of the oligarchs?

While it's worth the effort to elect Democrats, even establishment ones, because on economic issues they won't help us much, on the issue of human rights in particular, there is a huge difference between the fascists and the establishment Democrats (and if that does'nt sound right, go read up on Christian nationalism and pay more fucking attention).

But even the bluest of blue waves is not going to help much on most fronts. But it will help on some fronts.

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

vote green for the status quo comrade

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

No, it's worse than that: Vote green to support fascism.

[–] Natanael@infosec.pub 5 points 2 days ago

14A3 disqualification of Trump starting from J6 or earlier (traitors can not be elected, thus nullifying the whole second term)

With all pardons now nullified, all immunity erased, all appointments undone, prosecutions can begin.

[–] UpAndAtThem@lemmy.world 28 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They have to. Sure political fuckery and cowardice would likely derail their effort, but it's a moral imperative. To those who say, 'it's pointless look what happened last two times' look what's currently happenening because Dems were too weak to fight and let his crimes slide.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think the issue the last times was that Democrats took Omar's advice too closely -- "If you come at the King, you'd best not miss", so they tried to focus their efforts on particular things they thought they could build a compelling story about: the Ukraine/Russia stuff in the first impeachment, and Jan 6 in the second. They didn't fathom how Republicans would just ignore it all.

I used to be in the camp that if given a House majority, Democrats shouldn't go there again. But I've changed my mind. They should definitely go there but this time put it all in. Every single thing that we all shook our heads and said "They wouldn't have let anyone else getaway with it". Send over 150 counts individually cited, with receipts.

If nothing else, if Republicans are in charge and summarily dismiss it, all the crazy shit they let him get away with will be on the record. And, if somehow Democrats gain control of the Senate, too, I'm sure Chuck (or whoever else is running things) will have no problem forcing a vote on each charge individually. Call it "Infrastructure Month " in the Senate....

[–] grue@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Do a separate impeachment for each thing individually and gridlock Congress for two years.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

No. They will not.

Hakeem is secretly meeting Kushner

AIPAC Dems are funding AIPAC Republicans over DSA candidates

Here is Tammy duckworth

https://youtu.be/Cm53m1L4Vas?is=tylEWtlOOoOuycnv

They won't do anything and there will just be show trials with a new mueller/smith and a whole lot of "aww we just missed the margin for the vote, make sure you vote HARDER"

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

any democrat that isnt campaigning on 100% unfucking what Trump did, is a democrat in service to the republican agenda.

and its especially galling hearing someone like duckworth say shit like "well, we shouldnt be impeaching, and maybe we can kinda sorta maybe undo a fragment of what he did, perhaps by chance, because i think benefitting the american people means appeasing trump."

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Hate to say it, but there won’t be a candidate working for Team Defuck. Democrats capitulate. They are the Party of Bygones.

They can see how broken it is, but in their minds justifying not fixing it because of the effort it will take is easier than owning the problem and forming a solution.

yep, its really all the voters fault.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

In a sense, yes. Fool me once and all that.

[–] benderbeerman@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Will they? Yes.

Will it matter? No.

[–] snakedrake@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If they can actually get an impeachment through it’d be one of the most significant moments in American political history.

They've already impeached him twice.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The impeachment process is broken. Its like a referee throwing a flag on the play against "the red team" and then asking "the red team" players if there was really a violation and if a penalty should be applied.

[–] hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It was intentionally designed to be super difficult to impeach a sitting president, as the founders wanted to maintain political stability and discourage witch hunting by the majority party in Congress.

The problem is, it serves to maintain political inefficiencies. It creates lame-duck governments that accomplish nothing. The “stability” is just maintaining the status quo, and we’re stuck with incompetent or corrupt presidents for their entire term, as well as an inefficient, useless Congress. A lot of damage can be done in four years.

Personally, I think it needs to be a lot easier, like how other countries can oust a PM at any time for incompetence and/or corruption.

If establishment Dems gain a majority this midterm, we’re stuck with another lame-duck government for two more years, as it’s not a veto-proof majority that can impeach or make constitutional amendments.

That’s why I think the DSA are a good thing. Their platform includes abolishing the Senate. That would be a tremendous advance in making government more efficient at getting things done.

[–] DudleyMason@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago

I mean, why not? They're great at hollow showmanship that does nothing meaningful, it's their bread and butter!

[–] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 11 points 3 days ago (18 children)

They should, but they won't.

Can we also impeach and remove Vance too?

[–] SilverNexus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Considering that the Senate failed to convict him when he attempted to stoke a coup, I have little hope for an impeachment to anything but another one for the pile.

[–] eurodyne@piefed.world 16 points 3 days ago (3 children)

They didn’t fail to convict him twice, they refused to convict him twice. And that is an important distinction to make.

I'm happy just to see how many impeachment tallies Trump can rack up, because I can't think of anyone else more deserving of being the most impeached president.

But it's a useless gesture, because you don't need just a majority to remove the president from office, you need a supermajority. And that's just not happening unless Trump manages to piss off the majority of Republicans, too.

If we don't come down hard on these clowns, we are gonna be up to our balls in jugglers!

(And they can forget about the general if they don't put the hammer down after midterms)

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Impeachment is pointless. The question is whether the Senate will vote to remove him

What the hell else could be the point of winning control of Congress? Putting trump in a cell is the last hope for American democracy (if any such hope exists).

[–] Darukhnarn@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

Cell? Try the guillotine.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If anyone believes they actually will, I have a brand-new shiny perfect example of how we got here to begin with that I’ll sell for a reasonable sum.

[–] nathan@lem.permisuan.com 4 points 2 days ago (6 children)

I mean they already voted for impeachment twice

They should, just because that's the tool they're explicitly supposed to use to curb an of of control executive, but I also don't particularly care about them doing it. It's a box to check and a media spectacle to give them an opportunity to highlight the abuses, which they'll probably flub, but it's also not particularly important.

What I want from a Democratic Congress is them to say "no" on everything, pass good governance laws he'll have to veto, and to use congressional subpoenas to compel testimony to put all the crimes and corruption and inhumanity on the record. Because I don't think there's a way to meaningfully provide justice in the next two years, but I want bringing them to justice in two years to be the driving goal.

Oh, and zero out funding for ICE and the CBP. Let them coast on the giant pile of money the Republicans gave them. Not one cent more from Democrats. That's a message that will motivate me. Not more promises of performance.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

They'll keep trump around as long as they can. Being just to the left of trump gives them much more area to operate in than being truly a left leaning party. More bribe checks to cash. he's the best thing to happen to the dem centrists since.. the start of the republic maybe.

[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They should impeach him 1000x it will have the same outcome, but at least historians can note this as "The Democrats in the 2020s proved the impeachment process is worthless. Politics had become entirely ruined, the president had become completely unaccountable. Only he was above the law."

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago
