Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.

As a former donor to KDE I love nothing more than being called mere rabble.

I signed the KDE For People open letter, am the third name on it in fact, and pointed the person who wrote it to the domain name it uses because I checked and it was cheap enough for her to afford it. I take pretty great offense at being labeled a "brigader" and take even more offense at that only quietly being walked back after enough people had said he's using the word wrong for it to somehow stick. I also got to become a member of the "blocked by KDE club" on my Wafrn account because I guess pointing out that they are doing the thing they claimed they're not doing is a badness. I didn't leave KDE. They burned that bridge for me.

The main thing I take away from this is that KDE does not consider their users part of the community.

Update on the KDE situation: Nate has since closed the comments on his blog entry about the AI policy (citing fighting in the comments, which was like... 1 mild disagreement?), and the one discussion thread on KDE Discuss about the AI Policy was closed suddenly without explanation after a KDE developer began to discuss the ethics of AI use. Nate then responded after the thread was closed with this:

[–] daemonspudguy@awful.systems 2 points 18 hours ago

About the sliminess I expected.

[–] rhamph@awful.systems 16 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Comment by Tom: It’s frustrating how you totally discount the desires of KDE users. Are you just developing KDE for yourself? Or do you think users don’t care how you develop it?Response by Nate: For the benefit of education, this is an example of a comment that’s not treating the topic with an adult level of maturity.I’m keeping it here for illustrative purposes, but all additional ones will be removed.Reminder to behave like kind adults. 💙

So that’s a “yes”

Also, are the very powerful and sophisticated tools in the room with us now?

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 14 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (5 children)

How the fuck is that not a mature question? What a childish way to police your own comment section. Have all pro llm people lost their minds?

[–] rhamph@awful.systems 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I think this perplexes us because we’re tying ourselves in knots trying to rephrase it that it might be deemed more ‘mature’. But that is missing the point: bringing up the concerns of the users at all is just a fundamentally immature remark.

We, the developers, are the adults in the room, and we want to slop it. So fuck off.

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 1 points 3 days ago

See this is a proper mature remark, it explains reasoning clearly, it shows empathy for the first comment both understanding it, and explaining where it was wrong. And ends with some powerful mature words.

[–] BlueMonday1984@awful.systems 10 points 4 days ago

Have all pro llm people lost their minds?

Short answer, yes.

Long answer, yes, they've all fried their brains with the slop machines by this point, and some of them probably never had any.

[–] o7___o7@awful.systems 9 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I mean, if I wanted to be childish I'd say that Nate's ok chasing all the users off because he's used to playing with himself.

It's obvious, by comparison, that the OP was being perfectly reasonable.

[–] jaschop@awful.systems 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think he realized it too and sockpuppeted a better example. Check the comment by "Gerard"

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Wtf.

E: So my german is bad, like bad bad, but I feel like it should be 'dir' and not 'dich' in this case for some reason. Is it just me? Anyway saying that all in German is pretty weird anyway. (In addition to death threats not being ok).

[–] jaschop@awful.systems 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Je, wrong gramnar and the german feels totally off. Much too wooden amyway for a proper death threat.

[–] rhamph@awful.systems 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well now I’m very confused. As far as I can tell, there’s nothing particularly special about ‘töten’, and its object is accusative. So why should it be dative in this… uh, case?

[–] jaschop@awful.systems 1 points 4 days ago

You're right. The grammer is right, but it still sounds off. Like, idk, someone fully capable of english leaving threats in his second language to be sneaky?

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Time to tell Yud his german sucks, and to stop threatening KDE people.

(Im making a joke out of it here, but to be clear I have no reason to think he made up the death threat, and I dont think those sort of messages are acceptable. The seemingly bad German can just be explained away by gerard thinking because kde is a project with a lot of ties to Germany everyone who is active in it understands German).

[–] e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 5 days ago

The answer to that question might surprise you.

[–] ebu@awful.systems 8 points 5 days ago

"I'm frustrated that--" "You're just being immature!" yes thank you, glad you capped off the insult with a heart emoji

KDE e.V. has [verified] that Framework had severed their (already very limited) ties with DHH and Omarchy.

This is asserted in the article, without citation. I'd love to know a source we can verify for this? Haven't seen any verifiable announcement of this about Framework severing ties to DHH, or exactly what that entails.

[–] oblomov@sociale.network 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

@bignose @e8d79 I don't think they ever financed Omarchy directly, just Hyprland, and AFAICS it's still there:

[–] hub@cosocial.ca 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

@oblomov @bignose @e8d79 they allegedly gave some laptops to the millionaire for his scripts. that's like money.

[–] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

According to Nathan, they told him behind closed doors that they withdrew support to Omarchy.

[–] dfyx@social.helios42.de 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

@bignose @e8d79 All I can find is that Omarchy is neither on the list of recommended distributions nor on the list of sponsorships. Hyprland is still listed as sponsored at 7200€ per year though the list hasn't been updated for a couple of months.

It would be really nice to get an official statement from @frameworkcomputer on this. Their products are excellent and we have multiple FW13 in this household but the way they have been handling this leaves a really bad taste.

[–] dfyx@social.helios42.de 3 points 5 days ago

@bignose @e8d79 Seems I have missed something. Omarchy *is* on the list of distributions that have received hardware sponsorships: https://frame.work/de/en/linux

[–] markgl@mstdn.plus -2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

@bignose I may be wrong, but I believe that the only direct link between Framework and DHH was them mentioning Omarchy on their social feeds and they stopped doing that.

Also they never financially supported Omarchy or DHH as far as I know. Their sponsorships are here: https://frame.work/blog/framework-sponsorships

[–] flowerysong@awful.systems 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

You are wrong. Omarchy is still listed on https://frame.work/linux as one of the "distributions" that they give free hardware to, and Nirav's statement that they "don’t partner based on individuals’ or organizations’ beliefs, values, or political stances outside of their alignment with us on increasing the adoption of open source software" is still available at https://community.frame.work/t/framework-supporting-far-right-racists/75986

You'll also note that Hyprland is on the list of officially sponsored projects, and while I was willing to give that community the benefit of the doubt for a bit, Vaxry was a speaker at Omacon and sponsored by Omacom, proving that I was wrong to do so.

[–] markgl@mstdn.plus 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

@flowerysong I wonder what the source in the original post was. I can't find it.

[–] self@awful.systems 6 points 5 days ago

they did much more than just mention omarchy, and they’re still funding hyprland who are exactly the same types of assholes
