So this is something I've been doing for years in my semi-personal/organizing type interactions. But after scrolling through Instagram, I saw a post that posits that this isn't common knowledge?

You want working class people to show up and listen to you for an event? The solution is food, more food, and better food. All working class community events are built around food. The ones that aren't are built around drugs, and well I don't know many good orgs that started off by giving people free drugs. I'm kind of a lone wolf organizer as of right now, I do the shit I do for the left at my own apartment. My friends, along with my friends' friends, know they can just call me and say they're hungry, and I'll start cooking literally whatever I have in the apartment at that moment. If y'all heard me talk about the med thing I used to do in the mega thread, that was also just word of mouth amongst friends and people pulling up to my residence.

If you want people to believe you believe everybody on this planet should have food, put your money where your mouth is. Every serious socialist org should do regular potlucks. Neurotypicals that go to events and say "oh I'm here for the people" are lying to themselves and everybody else because that's all the neurotypicals are capable of. Numbers say y'all came here for food and stayed because of what you heard. That's just numbers talking. Offer food, and you get more people, and by actually feeding those people, you're showing you do more for them than their government and all the filthy capitalists who say they care. I radicalize people because they see how little I have, but they also see how hard I go to make sure I'm able to feed every motherfucker that comes through this house, and I speak with conviction. They know I'm a smart person, and once I feed them despite the fact that I often go hungry, they see my dedication to my ideals and they're more likely to be moved

I'm just an individual doing this, I fucking wish orgs around me would pick up the same energy and realize that human organizing has been based around food for thousands of years. Convince your org to get into food, and I mean good food. These people see the food you serve as a representation of the future if you're doing it as an org. The beans and rice work at my place because people understand that I'm an individual well below the poverty line. But for a whole ass org? Yeah y'all can't serve mid food, there's too much collective resource there for potential converts to give it a pass. Orgs have to serve great food.

The black Panthers figured this one out a while go. The seik peoples as well come to mind. Beans quite possibly are the solution to capitlaism.

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah guess I should clarify, when I mean beans and rice, I mean what I'm currently serving people. I'm pretty low on seasonings and only have black beans so there's not much variety unfortunately. Beans and rice are fine to serve at events, but they have to be good beans and rice

This is like a lesson that's so obvious that no one ever bothers to write it down. You'll have young lenin quoting communists who will not even think to order a pizza.

We need like a Sun Tzu of all the obvious practical organizing.

I could probably get published by Labor Notes or Harper's like Secrets of a Successful Organizer. I'd have to spend a years travelling across the US interviewing unsung organizers of all stripes.

I'd earn so many Amtrak points if I was able to convince people I wasn't a fed.

100%, the local organization I'm part of does a ton of potlucks in addition to other events and the potlucks are always the best attended.

fun fact: potluck isn't actually a bastardization of word potlach in the pacific northwest, but the potlach was made illegal for basically the same reasons you're advocating for foodsharing and potluck events. the potlach system was really important to Indigenous political organization, national identity, and resistance to colonization.

[–] Clippy@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

potlac

do you mean potlatch?

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Also gonna add, I have more people show up to my shitty HUD apartment in the ghetto to get fucking beans and rice, and the beans and rice are often mid as fuck because I'm so poor that I still have barely bought any seasonings for my house. I really need to find money to expand past serving Mexican black beans. Anyways, if I can get people to drive through the shittiest part of the city (a place where I have now been shot at at point blank randomly and witnessed another person get shot for being annoyed at a tweaker within 3 months) to get mid ass food and listen to what I say, these huge fucking orgs can provide better food

Unfortunately these huge fucking orgs (at least near me) are gonna be teaching ridiculous shit if they ever pick up on this.

Stir frying is a good way to spice up cheap things

stir fried anything + rice becomes a full meal and for cheap

use cornstarch slurries for your gravy, itll thicken it up

I discriminate against neurotypicals because they deserve it

for about a decade, i used to work in informal adult education (free, voluntary, generally just teying to get people to know about free resources and provide free technical assistance) and even when the target audience would be stable, comfortable income... providing food was a game changer. and providing time to eat and talk casually amongst each other was huge for participation.

i always advocated for it and other professionals were mostly on board. it was frequently the boards (the pursestring holders) that would push back and instead want to blow the budget on some fancy venue and let people scatter to feed themselves.

i would just say, "if you feed them, they will come." it's the easiest part of the equation. food is community, land, people, and connection.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

You remind me of that Austrian communist guy who went to people's apartments and fixed faucets and other stuff landlords were too cheap and lazy to do.

I think people believe your actions a lot more than your words. If you want people to believe that you want to improve conditions for the masses, actually helping people in whatever way you can is going to be one of the most persuasive things you can do.

I cant fit food through my mask so its very awkward (and annoying, and depressing) to sit there while others eat. But unfortunately my org has given up (back in like 22) on covid precautions. So you'll be happy to know we're doing our part to infect everyone with covid bc treatlerites cant be bothered to come to shit without material incentives

That is to say, I agree with your analysis strategy in the modern day; i strongly disagree with your presentation of this as human nature. When I read about the actual old proletarian organisations in 48, 71, or 17, i dont see food mentioned (except as needed to fuel revolutionaries, or as aid to the poor (edit: i.e., as its own event, not a motivator to do political work). Its only among the petty bourgeois and upper classes i see mentions of banquets and social events predominate over education and action as the way to get people out

Also bold of you to assume we have funding for food; we spend most our money sending execs around the country bc god forbid people have a zoom meeting instead of exchange germs face to face.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Food Not Bombs exists and not only are my local chapter extremely effective with funding allocation it is always out doors and we distribute masks, sanitizer, and test kits.

People are free to take their food and go where is safe to unmask and all the volunteer staff wear masks.

[–] ComradeRat@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Ye, those sorts of orgs distributing food is very different from food as an incentive for coming to meetings tho (as i mentioned in my edit)

Edit: Also, i'm glad your chapter masks and does stuff outdoors. Mine doesnt. Our experiences are very different it seems.

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lol do you see how often I post on mutual aid? If people on this site don't help me out, I live off of $200 a week at best and that includes my bills. I still put money aside for feeding other people. Right now, all I have for food is restaurant quantity of beans and rice. I take out of my own mouth to feed working class people around me because if I don't nobody else will.

If orgs want to feed their people, they will.

[–] ComradeRat@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

I agree with you; unfortunately i've been outvoted. In my ideal world, all my orgs money would go towards distributing food and masks to people and printing agitprop instead of plane fares.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When I read about the actual old proletarian organisations in 48, 71, or 17, i dont see food mentioned.

classic

[–] ComradeRat@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You will find a million bolshevik pamphlets talking about the workers need for bread and supporting workers mutual aid societies; you will be hard pressed to find any examples of the bolsheviks bringing food to meetings to encourage attendance.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

First the Bolsheviks weren't the only proletarian organization in history. Most proletarian organizations aren't vanguard parties. Second, this still doesn't mean they didn't have food at their meeting. Having food at their meetings could've been as obvious as having a fire lit in the winter.

[–] Feed_el_Castro@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

To anyone doubting you:

Image from "La Fiesta del PCE" in the late 1970s, the party (as in festivity) of the Partido Comunista de España. Why the fuck were there so many people in a communist party's party?

Because free/cheap food & wine.

Username checks out.

In Venezuela, when the PSUV visits barrios or comunas, they make sancocho, which is a traditional dish of the Caribbean with potatoes, yam, corn, any choice of meat, and I'm sure there must be vegan options. It's the fastest way to someone's heart, and an activity as old as time.

[–] 1Malayali@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm just an individual doing this, I fucking wish orgs around me would pick up the same energy

Maybe you can suggest this to them? Your experience might be useful for them too

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm shooting myself next time one of them tries to make me say "Slava Ukrani!"

[–] 1Malayali@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

Why?
Would it not better to make them not try?

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

I'm starting. My social life around here didn't start until about a year ago. I spent most of my adult life isolated from others, so I just got the opportunity to even engage with local orgs. Some are good, some really fucking suck. Most of them really fucking suck

[–] Clippy@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

what kind of beans and rice recipes are you making?

immediately thought of some chili with rice. then Mujadara (rice lentils and saute onion)

do you put msg (aka powder chicken boullion) in your dish? really easy way to add savoury for the cheap

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago

I used to yeah. I usually do Mexican style black beans and rice, and that's what I currently do. Ever since moving out of sober living though, even seasoning is pretty expensive. I get what I can. Currently no MSG or anything special that I can't get at the Aldi by my place for dirt cheap. But back when I was sober living house manager, my meals were a lot better

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just gonna jump in so say that chana masala is never wrong.

[–] Clippy@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

chana masala

thanks i will look it up!

[–] Feed_el_Castro@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

Yanks were right all along: communism is when free stuff...

[–] just_an_average_joe@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

In my experience, people lose interest very quickly and it also get very expensive, very quickly. I did this last ramadan, and within 4-5 events, the number of people declined from 35 to 6 and every event costed like $150 with lots of leftovers.

Also im kinda hoping you are not the leyla i know irl, she also lives in a ghetto part of the city lol

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

PM me your name and I'll tell you. But imma be real, if I'm the Leyla you know, you would have no fucking question that it's me based off what I say. I don't compartmentalize. I am the same person online that I am offline

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

Also, strength in numbers. Orgs should do potlucks to lessen the burden on any individual. I know AA/NA meetings that take recruitment more seriously than local orgs

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes you have to be careful to ensure food is a mutual sharing that is inline with individuals' normal budgets (like what they cook for themselves), not a charity event. A food budget otherwise gets rapidly depleted, it is amazing how fast you can spend $4000 if you try to build a community campaign around free breakfasts etc.

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

50lbs of rice and 60lbs of black beans were about $70 at a restaurant supply store. Once I can start getting shit like onion and garlic, more seasonings and variety, I'll pretty much have a mini vegetarian restaurant in my house for cheap.

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hell yeah that's how ya do it. And some bigass stock pots.

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah I used to be a chef, there's a restaurant supply store a couple miles away from my apartment and they're surprisingly open to the public. Oh well, if you're near a restaurant depot and it's not a public one, LMK because I know how to get a pass for like $12 a year. Restaurant Depot isn't as good as it used to be, but there's still some solid deals there

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago

Oh nice. I've got several hookups like that but thanks for the offer ha!

[–] Clippy@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Thank you for the suggestion! Always on the lookout to learn more ideas!

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Potlucks are also just plain fun. It's fun to share your food you prepare and show off a bit or share some culture. Plus if you have allergies or other dietary requirements you will have at least one thing you can eat.

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 week ago

can confirm, I'm autistic and I'm there either for the food or for the dogs and preferably both
