"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

“You are right to push back. That was a school, not a munitions dump.”

Making a killer drone that doesn't require human input just seems stupid. The human input is the point.

[–] Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

The argument is that drones can be jammed if they use wireless controls, and when piloted by fiber optics have limited range /can still sometimes have the fiber cut. Autonomous drones are the answer to the countermeasures being used in Ukraine/Russia right now.

So there's an excuse but it's still horrifying

This should be illegal and everyone involved should be barred from working in related fields for life. Straight to community service. Let them reconnect with humanity.

[–] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago

I think they should just be summarily executed like their victims

The demonstrations, license, and funding come before any official NATO procurement order or actual combat deployment. Concerns about lethal autonomous weapons are being addressed by a UN expert group. Its recent report concluded that human judgment and control are required to comply with the laws of war; its recommendations will be reviewed in Geneva in November

You should probably go to Geneva in November

Skynet Approved

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We don't know who struck first, us or them, but we know that it was us that scorched the sky.

At the time, they were dependent on solar power. It was believed they would be unable to survive without an energy source as abundant as the sun.

Need to update the Geneva convention.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ukraine already admitted to using indiscriminate killer drones in battle, which is a war crime, but no-one seems to care much.

What can we do about it besides sanctions and kinetic war against them? Were doing both..

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 7 points 1 week ago

Unfortunately, like the Ottawa Treaty on Landmines, countries at war are going to ditch their commitments to restrict inhumane weapons use at the first opportunity.

Looks like they're going to look into this in November

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Huh, I will be pleasantly surprised if the same governments whose companies are developing this tech and itching to use it in Ukraine and Palestine support its ban.

[–] moldy_rice@piefed.keyboardvagabond.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I hope it's not governments that make these decisions

Should be judges, game theory experts, activists, NGO reps, ethics philosophers, etc

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

It is governments which sign the Geneva convention, and the "judges, game theory experts, activists, NGO reps, ethics philosophers, etc" they allow/amplify are ultimately further expressions of those governments.

We come back to "everything is political", which is 100x more true for technocratic entities that claim to just be calling balls and strikes.

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

It's going to be hard to make that argument when those for it can just say: "this helps to reduce the use of combatants, so it saves lives."

But there are efforts https://autonomousweapons.org/global-legal-framework-milestones/

If y’all think this technology isn’t eventually coming back home then I have a bridge to sell you

[–] BallyM@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What’s the likelihood that Nvidia Jetson Orin Nano can tell effectively if someone is surrendering or is an innocent bystander?

[–] moldy_rice@piefed.keyboardvagabond.com 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

100% chance of hallucinations and/or false negative

[–] BallyM@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Exactly. NATO states are funding the development of weapons systems which are incompatible with the Geneva Conventions.

25 years ago swedish society would be in shambles even considering joining nato. We held citizens votes about joining eu and changing our currency to euro.

Recently when sweden joined nato citizens got no say at all in the matter, the only deciding factor was corrupt politicians, their wallets and big brother

[–] DegradationDenial@feddit.nl 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s a black box so we have no clue… hey where did this white flag come flying from?

Looks like debris of an ordinance. We should bomb it to be safe.

[–] dropdrip@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They don't care. Just another tally to add to their spreadsheet under the column titled "collateral". The Americans realized they could greatly reduce that total number with a very convenient assumption: any male of a certain age was probably in service to the taliban so they're a legitimate target.

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

That didn't start with Afghanistan.

The scene from Apocalypse Now with "Anyone who runs is a VC, and anyone who doesn't is a well disciplined VC".

They would notify everyone in a village they had to go to the concentration camps, then designate the area a "Specified Strike Zone", where every man, woman, animal, structure, and crops were considered to be enemies. Some of these areas had arsenic dropped on them to poison the crops via Agent Blue so nobody could move back in.

Before that, in Korea, standing orders for the airforce was to strafe any group of 5 or more civilians, because they must secretly be soldiers.

Jesus. This is going to be the tool of choice for terrorists and assassins next year.

How the hell do you defend against this?

Edit: I think the only solution is to build autonomous drones that attack autonomous drones.

We should probably create a "sky battle bots" competition with Foss drones to get ahead of this asap

[–] 0x0@infosec.pub 3 points 1 week ago

Drones, lasers, magnets, nets, buckshot

Preferably controlled by ai to make it autonomous

[–] blackshirt@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

terrorists

You mean like Israel and the US? yeah, they already have them.

EDIT: typo

I do mean like them, but I don't think they have them yet.

Israel had been using sniper drones and AI, but I have read zero reports of them being fully autonomous (yet). The kill lists are generated and approved by AI, but the drones are controlled by humans (so far).

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Can we just start killing people who make stuff like this

[–] Ludicrous0251@piefed.zip 8 points 1 week ago

Man, I was just thinking I my Waymo was packed with explosives. They never make mistakes and should be free to bomb without oversight.

Theu need to ban this technology in warfare just like biological weapons.

Go to Geneva

[–] bonesawmcl@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

As a linked article in the OP states, this is already in use in Russian and Ukrainian drones. Nothing particularly new, but still terrifying af.
