Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Also happy to see them on Nebula. Every episode there gets a nebula bonus bit at the end.
As someone who has basically cut you tube out of my life this is a good thing.
Zeteo, because Mehdi Hasan is the finest debator, interviewer, journalist, and political commentator of our time
Liltenhead, for Space Station 14 videos
Technology Connections, for all kinds of awesome deep dives into all kinds of subject matter like heat pumps, dishwashers, heat pumps, electric vehicles, old media formats, heat pumps, and heat pumps

Mentour Pilot for aviation accident debriefings
Alec Steele for metalworking
Practical Engineering
Animagraffs

Hermitcraft is usually good, PBS eons, TeirZoo, independent news (of the liberal/leftist variety), Overly sarcastic productions, Historia Civilis, inequality media, CGP Grey are all good stuff. I also enjoy Civvie11, YatzeeCroshaw, ERB, and a bunch of folks who mostly post shorts.
Oh, and if you are into Minecraft stuff, I'm trying to get back into content production myself. Same username.
Double toasted
Japanese guy who built a tiny house on his mini Toyota flatbed. There's no talking. There's always the same script: hit an onsen, cook elaborate dinner, sleep, cook elaborate breakfast. It's very relaxing.
That sounds nice--thanks for sharing.
Casual Geographic has great animal content, and is just a really funny likable guy.
Parkrose Permaculture for US leftist politics.
Attorney Mark Lopez for how to deal with cops (also US)
Accounting Rescue with Lisa if you have accounting questions
Fire Department Chronicles for funny medical skits
Former Black Panther Speaks: the origin of Standards Not Force, which is the spiritual successor to the Black Panthers.
T1J for interesting analysis of random popular media.
Chris and Jack for funny skits.
Mina Le for cultural analysis in media, particularly fashion and appearance related.
I also follow a ton of channels related to making and selling art, but i'm not going to list those unless anyone requests it.
Lots of great things here, excited to check them out. Two I didn't see mentioned, probably because the Lemmy/car-person demos don't overlap a whole lot.
Sarahntuned - restoring old cars with wit and humility. Does new car reviews to pay the bills in an entertaining and informative style that makes it interesting even if you're not shopping for a car.
Low Buck Garage - having fun fixing up old cars and other machinery in oddball ways. Funny guy you wish was your bffs dad.
Couple others since I'm here:
Alton Brown Cooks Food - Good Eats but Alton is old. And the editor commentary adds levity.
Fall of Civilizations - And the companion podcast (same content, no video). Brilliant explorations of the downfall of ancient civilizations. Cathartic in these troubling times to imagine how insignificant a human life is, and how vast human civilization has already been.
Project Farm - Consumer Reports but actually independent. Don't buy another tool without first searching "project farm <>".
Primitive technology
I have a strange mix of sports/outdoors/lifestyle genres that I like:
- adamdoesnotexist (specific mix of public transportation and camping)
- dustinthewind (very relaxing bike life in Chicago)
- Fergus Crawley (triathlon/hybrid athlete)
- Floberg Runs (marathon training)
- Xander Budnick (increasingly more remote survival camping)
- Lantern Rouge (very entertaining pro cycling talk)
Some I haven't seen yet: Sage the bad naturalist HGModernism Miniminuteman Nilered/Nileblue
For gaming, I tend to go with ACG and Noisy Pixel.
For movies in physical media formats, I like to watch Jeff Rauseo's channel, from time to time.
Recently found a transportation news channel called City For All, which is pretty niche, but I found it surprisingly interesting and relaxing.
For tech segments, I enjoy TechAltar and its sister channel The Friday Checkout.
I'm also keen on The Linux Experiment, Gardiner Bryant, and Michael Horn for Linux/open-source news and tips, as well as Continuum Gaming for Jolla/SailfishOS.
Somewhere in between the last two, I like the privacy segments from the Proton channel, together with Tech Gets Real.
Dr. James Gill (the content is actually pretty good, I'm just massively misusing his contributions) and Restoration Kamasutra channels for that sweet sweet ASMR.
For news and politics discussions, TLDR News EU or TLDR News Global, as well as EU Made Simple, and I guess The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight for poking fun at the news from across the pond.
Coldwarmotors - Canadian rednecks working on old junk cars, mostly. They're pretty funny at times and informative if you're interested in old American cars, they also do old French and old British cars sometimes. They also do actual restorations. He did a 60 Plymouth Fury that I wouldn't have even bothered with and spliced it with the platform of a 60 Dodge and made a really nice car.
Fall of Civilizations - It's a podcast, but he does video accompanyment and the content is very well written and researched.
Thenthapple - does fallout lore videos that I really like.
JTCurtisMusic - has a really good history of rock series.
WellRedComedy - Trae Crowder (the liberal redneck), Cory Ryan Forrester, and Drew Morgan do podcasts from a rural progressive view and also have a lot of their stand-up and comedy sketches
“Brutalmoose”/“Moose2”, easily!
“More Kitboga” is up there for me.
Someone randomly recommended “Thread Menace”, a Valheim speedrunner. Really comfy, chill, long adventures.
A few of mine:
Reb Masel - True crime / law podcast
Tommy Sabbatical - Off the beaten path travel vlog
What happened to All? I noticed a big change when I switched from the app to a browser, so I figured it was that. I don't want to bias the responses by saying what I observed.
Skuru Dog, Internet Comment Etiquette with Erik, Earlybird, GameGrumps, GMM, Mythical Kitchen, BlueJay, Odd1sOut, NileRed, Oversimplified, and Checkpoint.
I don't have a lot of overlap with what you watch, but maybe Atlas Pro? That might be up your alley.
I currently have a Youtube phase and like:
- Charlatan Wonder and Charl(his cat) for Immersive Sims
- Redlyne for the more obscure entries in gaming and adjacent areas (i loved his exploration of dead online spaces)
- oboeshoesgames for funny, more indepth stuff, oboeshoestwos for "bottom of the barrel" steam games and some surprisingly good games that do not have anyone playing them
- Denys Davydov well sourced daily Ukraine updates
- INSIDE RUSSIA for how the SMO changes Russia and how the russian system works
- Perun for everything military
- The rest is Science with the Vsauce guy and Hannah Fry, Hannah Fry herself too
- Louis Rossman, Gamers Nexus and GNCA for Hardware and consumer rights
- Technology Connections, Veratisium, CPG Gray, 3brown1blue, NileRed, Styropyro, Codys Lab, Elektroboom and Chem Thug for more Sciencey Stuff, Chubbyemu for medical stuff
- Strange Aeons and Lessons in Meme Culture for Subcultures and to be up to date on popular Memes
- Legal Eagle for US legal stuff and Reckless Ben because he's insane in a good way
Edit: a few of them are currently inactive, like CPG Gray (but the Cortex Podcast is still going), but there's so much great stuff there that you won't run out for a while

Unlearning Economics (professional economist discusses various problems with learning econ 101 and stopping at that)
