Who knew Trump took Canadian Bacon (the movie) so seriously.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 3 points 17 hours ago

I'm in California, Canada - please annex us. We can draw up a map of the places you should leave behind. You know, the conservative ones.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Please no, I already buy too much Canadian whisky. Add in proper poutine... chef's kiss. Jokes aside, this would be dumb.

It's one American in particular pushing it, so it's a bit funny to use plural, but yes, he means it.

[–] droopy4096@lemmy.ca 6 points 12 hours ago

as article points out: that one person is supported by a whole class of Americans - the billionaires. And those in turn are supported by not insignificant portion of American population. So plural is very apropos here.

And 1/3 follow without reservation.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

And another 1/3 don't care what happens.

[–] ContactClosure@lemmus.org 8 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

It's really just a few of us, but they control the media and military so that sucks.

Even if we came willingly, the Republicans wouldn't really want another California.

Trump doesn't seem to get that's what it would be, though. Except also add a raging insurgency, which would most likely spread.

[–] sanzky@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

in the hypothetical case of an annexation there is no way Canada would get statehood. they would be just another puerto rico

The title seems to be generating confusion, but the author's point is that there are billionaire oligarchs (not just Trump, people whose power is not term-limited) pushing to gain control of Canada's resources. He's not talking about ordinary Americans nor is he necessarily talking about an invasion or a war.

The playbook here is generally to apply economic pressure with the aim of causing political discontent, while at the same time financing an opposition faction that's more pliable, like they're doing against Cuba, Afghanistan, Iran, etc.

[–] MrOtingocni@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

And did in the UK and US.

[–] GardenGeek@europe.pub 11 points 1 day ago

Sounds like the same play book that is used with great success in Europe currently.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

True. I am very serious about thinking my President is a fucking moron for wanting to annex Canada. And also for every single other aspect about him.

Get your gun license. I'm not kidding.

You don't have to own a gun. Just learn how they work so when push comes to shove, you'll be ready.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol -1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

You shouldn't need a license.

You absolutely should. We're talking about tools whose purpose is to destroy and kill.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 57 points 1 day ago (2 children)

MAGA dipshits severely underestimate how many Canadians would actually enjoy taking a break from the rat race to repel invaders.

[–] orioler25@lemmy.ca -1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Are you joking? Most of you couldn't even fucking handle staying inside and not going to parties when you wanted to. Stop acting like Canadians are hard.

How can anyone take this article seriously after opening with this clear misinterpretation:

Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated he will return to the bargaining table β€œwhen the Americans start being serious.” How much more serious can the Americans be? The Americans have been very serious right from the beginning of Trump’s second term. Trump has constantly repeated 51ST state, governor of Canada statements and now Lake America.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I don't know how you miss inference "...about a trade deal." and it not be intentional.

[–] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Trump Always Chickens Out is a disastrous belief

[–] BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know about that article, but most of us don't want to annex Canada. Just a vocal minority and their demagogue jackass are blabbering endlessly about it.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 13 hours ago

About a third of Americans support Trump and about a third don't vote. So it's really only just a third of Americans that are opposed.

[–] arin@lemmy.world 43 points 1 day ago (7 children)

I'm american, and NOPE i am not, the Trump & Co are tho

I'm American (unfortunately) and I want no part in annexing any country. I actually can't recall anyone else here who does... Well except big orange wrinkly pimples in DC.
