3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Laurie says she was still waiting for guidance when ICE agents returned to the airport looking for another passenger. This time, she made a different choice. She called the supervisor at the gate, asked for the passenger’s phone number and called the woman herself.

“I know this is going to sound extremely radical, or crazy,” she recounted telling the woman, “but ICE is there at the gate, and they're looking for you."

There was a pause. “Are you serious?” the woman asked.

“Yes,” Laurie said. “I know this is crazy, but I promise you. I'm being serious.”

“Should I leave?” the woman asked. “I think it might be best if you do,” Laurie said.

That's awesome. Good for her.

Also

The ICE agents arrived after she was gone. Laurie recognized two of them from an earlier encounter. About 10 minutes later, one approached her, showed his badge and asked whether she could confirm that the passenger had checked in. Laurie refused, telling him airline employees could not provide passenger information.

As the flight neared final boarding, another ICE officer accused Laurie of interfering with the operation and pressed her to help locate the passenger. Laurie declined to say whether the woman was on the flight's passenger list and told the officer he would need to contact the airline’s corporate security department for information. “You're going to need a subpoena,” she said. No arrests were made at the gate that day.

Legend.

Unfortunately I worry that ICE is going to target Laurie in some way now :/

another ICE officer accused Laurie of interfering with the operation and pressed her to help locate the passenger.

In other words, an ICE officer tried to enslave her into government service.

Not all heroes wear capes.

[–] Aneb@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Most wear name tags, and don't mask up to hide their faces

I'm telling my company that I am no longer willing to fly domestic for work anymore. I'm white but fairly politically active and I guarantee I'd end up on someone's radar.

My wife keeps wanting to travel abroad for vacation. I have a hard time saying no to her most of the time, but on this one I've stood firm.

I'm not stepping foot in an airport until the brownshirts are disbanded.

Depending on how willing you are to get unconstitutionally arrested, making it an issue may be beneficial to your financial outlook. But most citizens dont has the emotional, financial, or familial availability to do so, so you do you.

I am operating under the assumption that being grabbed by ICE means you are disappearing forever, no legal chances. Despite being a citizen no rules mean anything now.

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I am also assuming thats the case, I am willing to do the legal fight if Im caught in the mess, but Im not going out of my way to be there. I dont have the same responsibilities most people would have

What legal fight? Again, the assumption is you disappear forever. There aren't any "legal fights".

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Disappearing forever is the worst case scenario and Id like to avoid it if I can, but also that really isnt the most common scenario and if ICE wants me there isnt much I can do to stop them. Theres the one guy thats been grabbed 3x by ICE and hes suing.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hmmm.. I do have legal services on retainer that I could utilize for this (it's only $300/year which was less than the contract review would have been from a local lawyer). I have a number I can call if Im arrested and an attorney shows up.

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bold to assume you'd be allowed to call anyone.

Going off of this, are you able to call the retainer and give them a heads up? “I’m getting on a flight from here to there and it is at so and so time, I can update you etc. Then, if they have no contact after 24 hours, maybe they can help start an investigation, reach out to some local news orgs?

It might cost money for no reason, but is it an option?

Be careful who you trust, airline people. These "Ice agents" are first and foremost irrational authority-fetish idiots with blanket legal immunity you dont have. If you want to take direction from them and voluntarily collaborate with them, good luck and get your checkbook ready.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

The encounters have also raised concerns about the position in which they place airlines and their employees. A Phoenix couple is suing United Airlines for false imprisonment and negligence over the carrier’s role in an ICE arrest at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Yup. ICE is bogarting that sovereign immunity.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 46 points 1 day ago (1 children)

massive kudos to "Laurie" for what she did for that woman. I hope more americans step up to the plate like she did.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

As an American myself, I dont know now that most Americans have the cast iron balls/ovaries to stand up to ICE. They mostly dont want to be anywhere near ICE and will do anything to get away from it. Part of me doesnt blame them-- there is no expectation that ICE will be reasonable or care about your rights. They are pretty open about having zero accountability, even when they murder someone.

we look back at the Gestapo and wonder how could people cooperate or be oblivious.. and yet, here we are.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 14 points 1 day ago

These ice goons are lucky all they're getting is mild push back.

Ooo so cool, dress up like a military/police man, carry a weapon ... said the 6-7 year old boy. Guess some never grew out of it and perhaps have never felt seen or accepted, and now tries to feel big by bullying others. Sad 😢
