I don't know, I was expecting more from it but instead just got too many corny jokes and a mostly generic protagonist. It's okay for a story to take itself more seriously...

I just don't understand this view. I thought it was the best film I've ever seen.
I don't know if this is a problem across all of Andy Weir's stories, but the protagonist in The Martian and PHM were both generic nerdy single white dudes who I didn't really relate to that much. The Sci-Fi concepts are very good, but I wish they actually focused on that more rather than repeating the "fist my bump" joke 50 trillion times. In the words of Vaas from that Far Cry 3 trailer, "one time is funny, two times is fucking annoying, no?" The story also feels very "and everyone lived happily ever after" at several points, but that's probably more to do with my personal taste in stories.
I liked it a lot too! Optimistic sci-fi about a couple competent people solving a problem - basically everything I love about the best episodes of Star Trek.

It was excellent. I came in fairly skeptical bc I had seen some excerpts from the book that were really Reddit-y. But I absolutely loved it

I've had it downloaded for weeks now, and I still haven't watched it. I'm glad you liked it, though.
I really do recommend watching it. Actually this and "Everything everywhere all at once" were both on amazon for free, and I thought I would love EE, and I thought PHM would be a bit "meh," but actually I hated EE so much I couldn't even finish it (it seemed to be just non stop fight scenes which I find extremely boring) and I loved PHM so much I can't stop thinking about it.

for me at least, the book usually is better than its adapted movie. off the top of my head, the exception I can think of is Starship Troopers (1997)
Last of the Mohicans is way better as a movie, especially to a modern reader

I really want to read it but I feel like I just don't have the concentration or cognitive ability to read a book any more.
I highly recommend the audio book. I pirate most of mine cause I believe its profiting off of disability aids to handle them they way society does. But that is how I read it. I can't really do physical books anymore either. Turns out the only reason my dyslexia ass could was because growing up I basically was isolated alone in a room. My house is too chaotic now and it takes me forever and a day to get through any of my physical books.
