"New Text Document" really pulls this meme together.

Cybernetically enhanced gang members = High-tech low-lifes.

This isn't cyberpunk, just a dystopia!

[–] ZILtoid1991@kbin.social 8 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, where's my micro-CDs? Where's my cyberdeck? Where's my cool robotic arm?

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 10 months ago

We didn't say it would be a cool or fun dystopia.

You have to make it yourself if you're not rich.

If you can't, it's because you're not a main character.

Sorry babe, them's the breaks.

The world started feeling all the bad bits of cyberpunky in the aughts. By the 2010s friends acknowledged it, had a now that I think about it moment or refused to accept a future without Spinners. ( Relevant XKCD )

These days, we know that only rich people and police would get flying cars, but for reasons we can't quite fathom, the surveillance sector of the US and Five Eyes really screwed over the information security sector, so that it's a black-hats paradise right now.

But in the 2020s so much of the scary horror shit written about in 1980s+ Cyberpunk has come true, and those we haven't seen may just be hiding in labs and undeveloped countries somewhere.

If time travel were possible, I'd be suspicious someone was mucking with the timeline since 2000, if not before.

Pretty much the most piratey of all the pirates in the first movie as portrayed by Geoffrey Rush. Rush's performance was so perfect Disney sought had to resurrect Barbosa and give him a prominent role in the third movie. He appears in all five of the Caribbean films.

This is actually a recurring phenomenon in pirate cinema starting with Long John Silver (1954) because Robert Newton nailed the character so hard in Treasure Island (1950) that Disney decided he was worthy of an encore. Newton's performance informs the common pirate dialect as we know it today the way modern depictions of Dracula (and sometimes vampires in general) take cues from Bela Lugosi's performance. Rush, in preparation for POTC1 studied Newton's performance, to grand effect.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day, celebrated every year worldwide, rose from silly parody holiday to global celebration with pirate parades, drinking festivals and carousing competitions, with much thanks to the Reformed Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster it its ongoing efforts to reduce global warming. In the mid 2010s the ITLPD Commission adopted the Silver Standard establishing Newton's depiction of Silver as the codefied ideal by which piratey dialog is to be conducted.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 10 months ago

I believe this, more or less, is the universal Disney experience.

[–] Fuckfuckmyfuckingass@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Oh that's it! I knew he was a pirate from something.

Me when I get in an accident and the ground ambulance cost 2k while the air ambulance would have been covered by my insurance because apparently it makes more sense to spend 5k on a helicopter rather then 2k on a ground ambulance turn out I'm also in debt to the hospital because It was out of Network and since I can't afford it I don't pay it and my insurance cancels because I have less then a 600 credit score so now im uninsured snd i can't afford my pain meds so i start to go looking for drugs from dealers on the street because they're cheap and eventually I'm addicted and sell everything to afford more drugs then I end up homeless and get raped by some dude who offered me a place to stay for a week and then I eventually take my life because I can't live with this pain anymore 😔. The crazy thing this can all happen in less than 3 months.

It's not gettin' to the Land of the Cyberpunk that's the problem. It's gettin' back.
