Arlecchino from Lies of P DLC for sure. Lea's story is absolutely tragic.
Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes
This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.
Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:
[BB] This enemy is so difficult!
or
[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Elden Ring and only Elden Ring, because I suck at souls games
I mean, Elden Ring is difficult enough. How far into it are you?
Already beat it twice including dlc, I had to shield poke PCR because PCR movesets suck at least for me but I beat other hard bosses normally, I like fighting Melenia the most followed by Godfrey, currently I'm on late game DLC
I’m playing Khazan and it’s pretty good. I’m having trouble with guarding as in every soulslike game but I can get thru bosses after several tries.
Difficulty is a mixed bag tho. I seem to bounce between being the steamroller and steamrollee basically every 2 levels.
Speaking of levels I kinda like the mission based system. They reuse maps for multiple missions but make them look different so I always have that „ooohhh I’m here“ feeling.
Yea the difficulty can be quite brutal. Since progression is tied to levels, upgrades, and loot, you can be very good at soulslikes and fighting bosses - you'll still probably fail because it takes ages to deal damage to bosses with suboptimal weapons and you die in like two hits.
Viper and Volbaino were huge roadblocks for me because I was ill-equipped for the fights. Later on, the bosses can still be very difficult (final boss might be harder than Sekiro's final boss), but they get manageable because you have better gear. Definitely helps if you grind a boss for a little for their set armour (and weapon).
What's the weapon you're using right now?
I forget the exact name but I have the full butcher set with the dual wield weapon. Yeah I struggle because I deal very negligible damage to bosses so each fight takes like 5-10 minutes. And some of the bosses have really wack attacks/combos. But then sometimes I'm stuck on a boss for like 10 tries, beat it, then, without changing any of my gear, the boss in the next mission goes down first try. It's all over the place.
I don't think I'm gonna finish the game tho. What's kept me going are the achievements when I beat a really tough boss like Elamein and the Steam achievement thingy says 51.9% of people beat this boss like wtf. But after changing from the greatsword to the dual wield for most of the playthru now there just isn't any of the build crafting I like in these games and the gameplay itself is a bit too samey for me.
It gets quite grindy and a little repetitive - I'll give you that. You gave it an honest shot and seem to have gotten pretty far into the game so no shame in dropping the game if that's enough for me.
I started out with the spear and realised it might be most OP of the bunch. Dual Wield was a lot of fun too tho because you're so damn mobile.
I have to give spears a shot. Luckily the game's pretty forgiving on respeccing. Especially the skills being entirely non-committal is a really great decision.
It's awesome! One of the things I like a lot about the game.
Just had a thought that having such a limited number of weapon types to choose from as a negative. But then I realised that the weapons feel and play a lot differently from one another quite a bit and that a skill tree for these three weapon types must have been challenging already. So either they would have had to invest a lot of resources on many more trees or scale back the scope of each individual tree which would possibly have made quite a bit more monotone or uninteresting.
Ye the skill tree is quite awesome actually. Maybe I should engage with it a bit more b4 quitting. Rn im in the process of converting to a spear build so I'll see how t hat goes
Edit: Just did a quick n dirty spear build while checking which skills fit my playstyle and then tried Xaldin again (for his claws). Damn this build shreds ass. Totally unoptimized build and I'm inclined to agree this is pretty OP. And way more fun than Dual Wield and Greatsword.
I think the saddest boss is Maliketh. Dude literally did nothing wrong, and was actively trying to correct a mistake that threatens everything in TLB caused by the curse Rani caused when killing Godwyn's soul but not his body. He is a good boy. And the game really downplays the threat deathroot is which makes his tale even sadder since we get literally no closure to that part of the lore. Even stranger is that deathroot (not the obtainable item but the visual effects/props) is in the Shadow Realm. How did it get there?
Anyway, out of all the bosses in all the games, Maliketh is the only one I feel could have been more RPGish by letting us talk to him and persuade him to abandon his loyalty to Marika or at least convince him that you need Destined Death to fulfill her plans. Instead we just have the option of kung fu fighting to the death. :(
Hopefully some more Sekiro, but I've been really unwell and not doing much of anything so I'll have to see what I have the energy for. John Japansouls will be there whenever I am ready
Saddest boss fights... several people have mentioned great picks already (Solaire and Blaidd in particular), so I'll go with a different one: the fight against Leda and co in Shadow of the Erdtree. Everyone there is suddenly clear-eyed for the first time in ages, and they've found themselves as former friends now irreconcilably at odds. Thiollier and Moore trying to kill each other, Ansbach and Freya trying to kill each other, and the end of the adventuring party you had gotten to know
For a non-soulslike game but certainly soulslike-adjacent-enough that I think it's worth mentioning, Shadow of the Colossus has a couple that really have you feeling like you're probably not the good guy in this story. The 13th and 16th, most notably
Oooofff. Both your picks are very emotionally charged... Lies of P definitely has some strong tearjerker moments. Romeo, and both the final boss fights (base game and DLC) in a way, due to the emotional buildup to them...
Not a boss fight but fighting Blaidd in ER diffinitely was a gut punch as well.
,----
Been very out of it when it comes to games, awfully slow and unfocused but will try to resume khazan. Paused it at the Rangkus fight, very entertaining having to manage his stance break recovery... I really like humanoid fights like that one. and probably my favourite area of the game so far.
fighting Blaidd
No. I’m part of her very being! I could never betray her!
The final fight with Blaidd really is super sad. Then the one-two punch of telling Iji about it and him dying in covered in Black Flame.
Hmm, I don't know that anything really is sadder than Sif (and I haven't played Lies of P) but I'll say Artorias just to say something different. It's not really a sad fight in the same way as Sif is, where he is limping and whining - especially if you get the post-DLC cutscene before the fight. But Artorias is still sad in another way, to see the great hero corrupted and fallen and lost. Though even more than his buddy Sif it's a fight that is made all the more tragic by knowledge of the lore. The corrupted hero cliché might not hit for everyone perhaps but I guess there just aren't all that many sad fights in Souls. I feel like there is someone else that I'm missing but it's slipping my mind.
Actually as I was typing below it hit me (and I can't believe it slipped my mind): I know it's not technically a boss fight, but killing Solaire is absolutely fucking gutwrenchingly depressing. He's with you the whole journey, he is the sole source of positivity and optimism - even friendliness ("jolly cooperation!"). Then you slowly watch his spirit and vibrancy fade as he slips into going hollow, losing sight of his sun deep underground until he's mislead by a fucking oversized firefly and turned into a twisted and wrenched satirical caricature you have no choice but to put out of his misery.
"...My Sun, it's setting..."
"...it's dark, so dark..."
Yeah, fuck you Miyazaki.
Well, no Souls right now for me. Actually, I really haven't been gaming much at all the past two months. I played another two chapters of The Drifter (it's incredibly good) and another mission of Wanted: Dead (it's wack).
I'll probably play Hell Is Us soonish though, so maybe I'll get into an actual Soulslike again soon and not continue to bring disrepute and disgrace over this community by constantly writing about off-genre games.
Solaire was so gut-wrenching the first time… This fall into despair.
You can, of course, save him from it if you know how to, which, of course, no one knows the first time. [You either pay 30 humanity to the Daughter of Chaos, and she opens the shortcut and you kill the bug, or you can kill the bug through the door with something like the Dragon Greatsword heavy attack.]
But did you know that, if you save Solaire and summon him to the fight with Gwyn, he can actually kill him alone without your assistance? It’s heavily, heavily RNG-dependent, but it’s possible.
Solaire, of course </3
I just finished my first ever Demon's Souls SL1 run yesterday, so today I'm celebrating with a overpowered Meat Cleaver run for fun. Demon's Souls quickly humbled me though, as it has a tendency to do, since I died more times to Flamelurker on this character than I did my SL1 character (I did have a +4 Crescent Falchion for that fight vs. a +1 for this fight, but still...)
Saddest boss fight in a soulslike is Father Gascoigne. It just breaks my heart every time I see what the music box does to him and then I pick up the red gem afterward, knowing what he did to his family with his monstrous insanity while trying to do good.
I also just finished playing through Bloodborne on PC in 3440x1440 ultrawide with mods, and it was glorious. It's surprisingly easy to get going, and it runs amazingly well - I highly recommend! I will say, though, that every time I play through Bloodborne I like it less. The whole time I just keep thinking "I could be playing Sekiro right now".
Father Gascoigne
Gascoigne and his whole family form such a tragic story. It still hits me in my heart every time…
Also, wtf, how could I forget Father G. when I wrote my comment, and how has no one before you mentioned him? He is such an obvious answer to the question, and many of the commenters, myself included, are massive Bloodborne fans.
Celebrating after a Level 1 run with a high damage run is always fun :)
After I did my SL1 run in Elden Ring, I did an Int/Faith run with the OP ^Sword^ ^of^ ^Night^ ^and^ ^Flame^ and so many busted spells, and I had a blast.
Congrats on beating your SL1 run, and have fun with your Meat Cleaver run.
The Four Kings. They're just chilling in bed playing footsies like the grandparents from Willy Wonka, when suddenly we show up and destroy their family for no reason.
The revolution has come, down with the monarchies
Ok, you might be cooking with that point
Playing Sekiro Resurrection mod currently; and I just murdered Katoro so that I could harvest the fleshy red lump out of his body after I tricked him into going to the abandoned dungeon to be experimented on by a sociopathic surgeon. Also, he cried for his daddy when I killed him.
Dinoblade has been fantastic so far. I hope I get some time to play it.
For saddest boss, I am not as experienced as most people here but I woukd probably pick The One Reborn. It's just pathetic once you take out the maidens.
Ive been playing Curse of the Dead Gods (from the giveaway- thanks again!). I'm currently through 3/3 of the first tier runs and 2/3 of the 2nd tier runs (then 3x3rd tier and 1x 4th tier from what i can tell without spoilers).
I'm having quite a bit of fun with it. It's a roguelite that has some interesting combinations of your gear (weapons+relics) + curses (which are generally bad but some have bonuses in addition to the bad). Last run i did i had a relic that gives +1 constitution any time i was under 50% health when entering a new room, a claw weapon that scaled with constitution, a 2 relics that healed me 16% per room, and another relic that gave me 100% of damage taken as gold. So basically every room i was triggering traps to go down to 34% health and make several hundred free gold which in turn also scales my weapon. My claw weapon was doing 50 damage per strike and shredded enemies. I almost beat the 2nd boss of that stage no-hit on my first attempt because it was such a strong combo lol.
That's so awesome - I'm glad you're enjoying your time! Also sounds like you've found your footing too.
So does the game fit the bill and the description of being a soulslike or is it a misnomer? From the little time I've had with the game, its focus is more so on rogue-lite elements and challenging combat. But not really a soulslike. What do you think?
Yeah i could agree with that. I think souslike and roguelite can overlap but here its not quite a soulslike. The main thing it's lacking is that there is no real loss for death other than you lost your run so no "run back" risk trying to get your souls. I also think that it doesn't quite reach the difficulty id expect from a soulslike, since the game seems to be a little more geared towards setting you up with gear intended for building combos off of. That just naturally brings down the game difficulty.
But, it's still fun. Finished another boss this morning and going to be doing the 3rd tier runs now.
No soulslike right now, because I’m working my way through the Resident Evil series in order, but this made me want to play Lies of P again.
The first one that came to mind is Sif in Dark Souls, specifically if you do the DLC first and she recognizes you. She goes from a regular monster boss to a sentient creature with a long memory and complex emotions.
Also, poor loyal puppy baby.
You aren't fighting that many sad Bosses… A number of sad things happen to characters, especially to the Onion boys and Alex, and a lot of sad things happen before the start of the game…
I must admit I didn't find the Sif fight sad in my first DS1 playthrough. Oh, a dog [swings Zweihander a couple of times] Oh, a dead dog and a ring. I didn't see the limping or the know the related lore. In retrospect, if you know the Artorius lore, have played the DLC, and maybe even seen the special cutscene where Sif recognizes you from the Abyss in the DLC; yes, it's really sad.
Romeo is also very sad in retrospect and makes me realize that I definitely need to replay Lies of P at some point. In NG+, I could hear the messages from the puppets, but I really want to start from a fresh save file with the promo weapon. Well, the solution is to play it twice more ;)
A third one that comes to mind is Orphan of Kos. Sure, on your first playthrough, you were more focused on the placenta that crushes your skull to paste and maybe the YYYAAOOOOWGGHH. In retrospect, you are fighting the ghost/manifestation/dream(?) of an unborn child, which is pretty damn sad.
(Also, as an aside, I just realize that the game never actually genders the Orphan. Wikis, books, etc., always assume that Orphan is male, but it's never stated in the game.)
On the whole, sad Bosses in Souls games are mostly sad in retrospect/on repeat playthroughs. Also, I feel like I missed some really obvious Bosses.
I'm going to start a new playthrough tomorrow. Probably of DS3. The SL1 routes for DS2 and DS3 sound really interesting. The problem is just ~~that I suck at DS2 and DS3~~ that I just don't know DS2 and DS3 nearly as well as Elden Ring, and I'm going to replay DS3 with a high Vigor and refamiliarize myself, and I'm probably going to press ╳ a bunch expecting to jump.
Good pick, I was thinking of Orphan( and perhaps Ebrietas ) as well. Different kind of tragic and sad though, further removed from our human player perspective.
No soulslike atm. I'm trying to finish my first Rimworld run. Gonna start charging my power core.
