Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

My internal clock has been utterly derailed by having finished school last week, so I didn't even notice that it's Friday again lol. I don't have any soulslikes on my plate right now - sounding like a broken record at this point - but I've been thinking about trying to get a PS4 emulator running on my PC to give Bloodborne another go. It's been way too long since I've last played it.

I'm not sure if it's the saddest boss in a soulslike, but Romeo from Lies of P is definitely up there. The second playthrough recontextualises many boss fights and this one was just gut wrenching.

What's your pick?

Ive been playing Curse of the Dead Gods (from the giveaway- thanks again!). I'm currently through 3/3 of the first tier runs and 2/3 of the 2nd tier runs (then 3x3rd tier and 1x 4th tier from what i can tell without spoilers).

I'm having quite a bit of fun with it. It's a roguelite that has some interesting combinations of your gear (weapons+relics) + curses (which are generally bad but some have bonuses in addition to the bad). Last run i did i had a relic that gives +1 constitution any time i was under 50% health when entering a new room, a claw weapon that scaled with constitution, a 2 relics that healed me 16% per room, and another relic that gave me 100% of damage taken as gold. So basically every room i was triggering traps to go down to 34% health and make several hundred free gold which in turn also scales my weapon. My claw weapon was doing 50 damage per strike and shredded enemies. I almost beat the 2nd boss of that stage no-hit on my first attempt because it was such a strong combo lol.

That's so awesome - I'm glad you're enjoying your time! Also sounds like you've found your footing too.

So does the game fit the bill and the description of being a soulslike or is it a misnomer? From the little time I've had with the game, its focus is more so on rogue-lite elements and challenging combat. But not really a soulslike. What do you think?

Yeah i could agree with that. I think souslike and roguelite can overlap but here its not quite a soulslike. The main thing it's lacking is that there is no real loss for death other than you lost your run so no "run back" risk trying to get your souls. I also think that it doesn't quite reach the difficulty id expect from a soulslike, since the game seems to be a little more geared towards setting you up with gear intended for building combos off of. That just naturally brings down the game difficulty.

But, it's still fun. Finished another boss this morning and going to be doing the 3rd tier runs now.
