So uhhh, what ever happened to "lol the gas station country is going to run out of bullets next week" and "Zelenskyyyyyy's le epic drone swarm leveled Moscow" and the Ghost of Chicken Kiev or whatever?

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Nothing. Most liberals I know are still 100% in on the "Russia is losing every day and Putin is shitting his pants" thing.
Direct quote from a guy I know: "Russian soldiers just shoot themselves the instant they hear a drone. Better to die on your own terms." At this point I just go "uh huh" now.
somebody over at lemmy.ml asked whether this article was Russian propaganda... from BBC
Comrade, why would you still talk to neoliberals? Because of job?
Refusing to talk to liberals is exactly the toss hands in the air and give up type nonsense lenin eviscerated in leftwing communism
I can like and be friends with people for non political reasons
besides it's really fun to talk politics with him anyway
I think the Consent Manufacturing machine is prepping westerns for an unsatisfying end to the war. Ukraine is clearly losing, America and the rest of Europe are tried of throwing money into a losing cause, the integration of Neo-Nazi groups into their military is getting harder to deny (especially when it's gotten to the point of pissing off Poland, a country that should be one of their biggest allies due to mutual hatred of Russia, but I guess naming military battalions after guys who did anti-Pole pogroms is a little tough to get over). Even the NAFO freaks over at r/neoliberal have been posting articles being frank about the grim prospects of the Ukraine managing to take back any of their eastern territory.
(especially when it's gotten to the point of pissing off Poland, a country that should be one of their biggest allies due to mutual hatred of Russia, but I guess naming military battalions after guys who did anti-Pole pogroms is a little tough to get over).
i will never understand this. you are in a war and keep naming streets and squares after genociders that ruin your relationship with the country supporting you the most. i guess its a consequence of looking for ukranian patriots not linked to the ussr but at that point just make someone up
Poland knew from day one that the maidan clique are banderites, and the clique themselves never hid this. But Poland just didn't reacted before at all, not even when Melnyk had his meltdown in Berlin. So they just remained openly nazi knowing Poland won't say a word to them, this only changed now.
i see, thanks for the explanation
Yeah, I think so as well. The west is all off a sudden discovering there are nazis in Ukraine, and that there's busification, and now Syrsky has been dismissed. I can't imagine this is business as usual. There might also be panic that Russia will take over Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, and Odessa too. So, they might be thinking of trying to wind the war down before that happens. But I can also see Europe doubling down and actually joining in too.
This just means that Iran's fucking them up. I don't think that much has changed in Ukraine. It's the same attrition warfare that Russia is performing and that the West has no real answer no matter how much they cope about "human waves." But now that Iran is blowing up US bases, they have to cut their loses, and faced between dropping "little Israel" (per Zelensky's characterization of Ukraine as the next Israel) and the real Israel, guess which "Israel" is going to be dropped like a sack of shit?
I'm sure Iran is accelerating the problems, but wars of attrition tend to look static for a long time and then once the collapse happens things tend to accelerate rapidly. A similar thing happened during WW2 when the Soviet army marched on Berlin in a matter of months once the German fighting capacity was broken. We shouldn't expect that Ukraine is just going to keep simmering at the same tempo indefinitely.
It's really gonna break a lot of brains when it happens though. Even as recently as last week I was seeing hundreds of redditors circlejerking about how Russia was getting destroyed and they had no chance and they should surrender.
A few people yeah.
I think most Americans are very fickle and lazy though. A lot of the impulse to fall for pro-western propaganda is laziness, forming an actually coherent worldview and applying it to complex geopolitical issues is a lot of work. Most Americans just swallow whatever slop is put in front of them because that's easy.
Inb4 elites masses and rebels link
Don't worry I'm sure they'll quickly pivot away from that...to pushing a stabbed in the back narrative.
"Lost cause"
What is the angle in pro-Ukraine westoids reporting on this? Probably that Ukranian refugees need to get deported back and Ukraine should be given more military support?
Literally had someone told me they were cowards and should have their citizenship revoked
I was so very tempted to respond with "Yeah, which war did you fight in again?"
So I did
After this war is over, I fully expect to see a repeat of the aftermath of the collapse of Afghanistan's puppet government, with libs blaming the outcome on Ukrainians being "weak and unwilling to fight for their country."
the difference is that this war's end will send out a bunch of angry veteran neonazis into western countries that will probably blame the lost on the west and may try to get revenge on them
It's going to make for a banger of a season of Blowback pod
I'm predicting a combination of this and the "Knife in the back" narrative
Trump being the knife in particular
Theyll find some way to blame it on leftists
I've been practicing my spellcraft to confuse the senate with a single 3rd level illusion spell
They're already under the effects of an enchantment spell (dementia) which does the same thing.
They'll probably blame the Jews. Classic trope used by Nazis wanting a scapegoat for losing a war.
Trump pulled support to Ukraine to fight a war at the behest of Israel, and that's why we lost. If those evil Jews didn't take the weapons meant for us, we would have won.
The best lies are told with a grain of truth at the center, which are then embellished upon.
Not so sure about that. Have you consulted the chart

The whiteness of Eastern Europeans has always been tenuous and I could easily see the Ukrainians' failure getting them kicked out of the club.
kicking them out of white club is already underway i think
Good response, fuck those bloodthirsty chickenhawk libs
Yeah, they didn't like that, but they didn't really have a counterargument so I comported myself magnanimously
Basically tried to find a common point of understanding, but it's very hard sometimes
Can't build a movement if you're a piece of shit
that's definitely an angle I've seen
To be fair outside of the most liberal circles I was assuming this is well known.
Average person has no idea what is happening in Ukraine, probably. People who follow the news seem like a minority.
Should have added a disclaimer that said people that follow the Ukraine war. I sometimes forget most people arent utter freaks like me
The number of busification videos is actually hitting a historic low. Which I take to mean they must reaaaaally be struggling to recruit now.

I'll never forget the video from at least 2 maybe 3 years ago, where a bunch of Hare Krishnas get bus'ed,
What is busification?
Imagine a busification video being the last memento you have of your partner, parent, or other loved one.
These videos are the moments where men found on the streets by the conscription agents try to fight back, bystanders, family members and others in ukrainian society often try to help. These people are kidnapped and shipped to a camp surrounded by landmines to prevent desertion where they undergo basic training before being dumped on the frontlines.
Forced conscription where Ukrainian "recruiters" kidnap Ukrainian men and send them to die on the frontlines of this miserable war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busification
Huh, just didn't know the term I guess
At the end of January 2026, president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the problem of "busification" and instructed Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov to deal with the issue.[17][18]
July sacking of Fedorov
If it isnt the recruiters its the training and if not that a drone you never saw coming.
