What a terrible analogy. Cannibalism can be, arguably, justified. Starving people will do things to survive. I don't really care what happens to my body after I die and don't hold dead bodies to be especially sacred. I can consent to being eaten after I die.

There's no argument, no circumstances, no valid logic that can say rape is ok.

I see your point and I am tempted to refute it but I don't have any way to do so without giving you the sensation I'm an horrible person

My husband saw this quote and his immediate response was “No. Cannibalism has no personal place in our minds. Young men need to be socialized in such a way that rape is as obscene as castration.”

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

Well sadly many societies still engage in forced castration or genital mutilation

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Bestiality is another good option imo.

[–] nehal3m@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well we kill and eat animals so by that logic... I don't think you'd want to go there.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

I’m not sure that’s an argument you want to make.

Look man..... This ain't a fair comparison. How's a guy to eat the rich when you compare it to rape so casually!?

I never understood why human and social interactions isn't an obligatory course on schools all over the world. Not just how yo treat women, but how to treat anyone, doesn't matter their gender, skin color, etc..

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That would be part of learning Critical Thinking Skills, which conservatives oppose, because they feel it teaches children to resist authority, which it does.

One time in a "religion" course, which was more abstract than usual, we had those ethics lessons. It wasn't about typical Christian religion or anything like that, just about ethics. I think that would make a nice course by itself. It was a derivation about just doing "decent" human stuff.

[–] Phunter@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

I took Anthropology of Religion 101 in community college and it would be my pick for "things that should be taught in high school that aren't even remotely mentioned". It covered ethics from a social angle that is very relatable. Runner up would be basic household accounting.

But that might make you less of an exploiter. Maybe even a communist. You don't want that, do you?

I think this is out of touch.

Literally every young man you go ask will confidently affirm "of course rape is bad"

The issue is they don't know what counts as rape.

"What if theyre really into you but also really drunk, but asks you to have set with them?"

"What about if theyre seventeen and you are nineteen but you are their coach?"

"What if you are both super high?"

"What if she says no at first but after you are persistent for an hour and she gives up and lets you have sex with her"

"What if you are both adults but you are her manager at work?"

Theres a lot of scenarios that are, indeed, rape, but a lot of young men would be shocked to learn that count.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (6 children)

I think some of your examples are poor. Managers and co-workers can hook up if they are consenting. Yes the manager has power over them, but especially in a big company that power isn't majorly significant. Its also possible the underling is sleeping with the manager consentually for their own benefit and gain. Power dynamics can be bad but are not inherently rape.

Now that manager starts using raises, prefered shifts or whatever else to gain sex, thats a different story.

For inedbriation like if we are both super high, first time is questionable, but sexual partners that have been together for years and get high every day? Probably okay in most scenarios.

[–] pixxelkick@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I never said all of my examples were rape, merely that young men would struggle and argue over which is which, because of a lack of education.

Many young and even grown men will even argue zero of the examples are rape (definitely incorrect)

Which is imo the real issue. This should be pretty decidedly taught in schools so both men and women grow up knowing what rape even is.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

The way you phrased your comment didn't make that clear. It reads as if you are listing scenarios that count as rape, not factors that should be considered.

I never thought about it that way. There's nothing physically stopping cannibalism, so it's horrifying to us due to almost ubiquitous social pressure.

So clearly we have the capability to make these changes and society just doesn't see it as important. Maybe that should give me hope but honestly this just makes me more disgusted.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (4 children)

There isn't exactly a physical/psychological base drive to eat other people though. People desire sex. They do not generally desire eating someone, and are generally well fed. If you took a sample of everyone who has ever been starving to death, I think you would find a much higher preponderance of cannibalism.

Not disagreeing necessarily, just pointing out that there is a slightly different reason for the two things happening.

As a man who already thinks like this I feel like I'm stuck inside some kind of limbo where I'm complicit because I'm a man but expected to be silent because I'm not the type of man they're referring to.

[–] orioler25@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (22 children)

You could like, make sure you challenge other men. That's kind of the issue, it's not that there's too many men who do this to require this response, but that the vast majority of men are more afraid of confronting other men than they are being silent about something they're morally apprehensive about.

Pretty sure that's the like, one of the main things that sexual violence prevention education and research targets is that men are overwhelmingly complicit in rape culture.

This is what is really needed. Calling out others for bad or unhealthy behavior when it’s seen but don’t go looking for it.

I lost a former good friend because he violated his wife and separately cheated on her. All of our friend group kept being friends with him even after he admitted to the allegations.

I get forgiveness, but he doesn’t learn if he faces no consequences and no one is even willing to say “that’s fucked up man” or “I won’t be friends with someone like you”.

For lesser things, a “dude, that’s gross” or “wtf is wrong with you” goes a really long way.

You're not complicit just because you're a man. You can't take responsibility for billions of men.

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

Even more fun, I was sexually abused by a guy as a kid, but I get to be constantly assumed and treated as the abuser rather than the victim.

It's absolutely not the goal, but I've just tuned completely out of any gender discourse online, because it feels like it's only ever shitty.

If the files told anything, it's that eating human flesh is one of the gazillionaire's delicacies.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Oh great, now they're going to start eating women, too.

[–] kablez@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Gonna get really confusing re-checking if a dude means he ate her out or ate her out.

Hey, hey, hey. Don't equate cannibalism with that heinous shit

Great, now the manosphere is going to start advocating for cannibalism

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think that cannibalism is acceptable in extreme circumstances.

That other shit though can fuck all the way off.

I really hate how society deals with rape. It's like 1\3 of the time it's mentioned it's part of a joke.

[–] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I would absolutely try cannibalism, if I had consent from the person and they were going to die anyways, and it was prepared by a professional chef... And I had some salt in case it was too bland
