He can't possibly do it, legally. By announcing it, he earns cred with people who like him and ensures that he couldn't possibly do it even if it were legal. It's a win-win for him as now he gets credit, but doesn't have to do anything.

Legally, there's an ICC warrant for his arrest.

Here is a fun fact: the US has a law which says they will use all means necessary to free a US service person if they are detained by the ICC.

And it's in the news again so I guess they are planning (more) war crimes 🤷‍♀️

Terrorist country.

Despite how our politicians act, netanyahu is not a US anything.

I'm not sure I understand this reply?

[–] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You specifically stated "free a US service person," which netanyahu isn't.

[–] mctoasterson@reddthat.com 4 points 2 days ago

The US isn't signatory to any of the enabling treaties of the ICC and generally doesn't recognize its authority.

Which is enforced purely on a federal level not on a municipal level

Unfortunately might I add

Why does announcing it ensure that he couldn't do it if it were legal? Because Netanyahu would stay away?

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago

Fidel Castro came to New York at the height of the Cold War and no police agency touched him.

And as an aside. Castro was told that he couldn't go anywhere except Manhattan. He agreed and took rooms at the Hotel Terresa on 125 Street in the middle of Harlem. He was a big hit with the locals.

Because Trump would be sure there are federal thugs there to intervene and because Netanyahu would stay in a safe location at all times.

That seems like the kinda thing you just shouldn't say. Nab him in accordance with international law and ship him out of territorial waters immediately.

The reason he’s saying it is to create FUD. The reality is that he can’t legally do it, but he’s looking anyway. At the municipal level, Netanyahu has diplomatic immunity. It would have to be done at the federal level, and they show no interest in doing so.

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It would be awesome to see but it would also immediately create another constitutional crisis

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago

Oh boy, two cakes!

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Populism of the bad kind. Announcing the arresting talks, I mean.

If Mandani were legit he would just arrest him. Period.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (3 children)

why would netanyahu be going to nyc?

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

NYC is the biggest Zionist haven besides Israel worldwide.

Power move to go to a place where he isnt welcome to meet exclusively with people that support him

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It says right there in the summary

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I see. one sentence among several pages of fluff padding that could have been four more sentences

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Or just read the summary
