The rest of the world is catching up to what Chinese and Korean people have known for decades. There will be more of these revelations as Western (and Western vassal) soft power recedes and the world sees them for what they really are.

People have such a romanticised view of Japan. Underneath what you and I see is a violent, horrible, brutal history and today there is little racial acceptance, it is more tolerance. They will rarely be vocal about it, but Japan is often racist place. From what I know, it is oddly the other way around in that it is the urban areas that are more racist than those who lives outside the cities.

It is especially disappointing to see how many leftists romanticize Japan in particular and make excuses about it just because a few anime artists are somewhat left-leaning and progressive, as if artists aren't left-leaning and progressive basically anywhere and even that's somewhat underrepresented in Japan compared to their population. It's not only a conservative society, it is conservative beyond its development and income level for the most part. Just because they aren't violent about their prejudices and bigotry (usually) doesn't mean they aren't, even in big cities. They have been basically riding something similar to "alt-right" since early 2000s too.

Just because they aren't violent about their prejudices and bigotry

Tapping the sign that says "ostracism, bullying, and other kinds of psychological violence are still discriminatory violence". Japanese society uses violence against anyone they deem "deviant", not to mention women or poor people, it doesn't matter they're not shooting or assaulting people.

Couldn't have said it better.

I know for myself in a ironic twist Japan actually helped me break through the small town American propaganda I was surrounded by. My 2nd grade teacher literally told me that we were lucky to be able to choose our clothes because no where else in the world was free.

Anime and video games made me go "well... Wait if these people are not free, how are they doing this. And I started looking up stuff as I could." Then there was the fact where I was a lot of people were racist of Japan and would justify the nuke (I will warn now, I will never view a nuke as justifiable).

Now within the past few years I've learned that Japan has a huge problem. It honestly makes me sad. I can't help but feel this is still an American issue. Because the US was certainty fast in coming in after the bomb and making use of the situation. I can't help but feel that the future might of been different with a more left presence in Japan.

Regardless. The right wing fascist element is going to continue to be a big problem. I feel for the variety of people like this family that will suffer because of it.

There is indeed always a sort of liberation in being able to associate with other if you are either othered yourself or asked to dehumanize the other, which is why I think so many progressives (and especially queer people) tend to associate themselves with Japan, because the media they produce gives them both an outlet and an out of certain social cycles.

Still, even in that situation, I do think that it is now Japan mostly is because it is seen as the only respectable other with qualities that can be emulated or even looked up to even as it is romanticized and fetishized. There used to be some others, at one point it was Sufi Islam in West, India and its spirituality and now there is also China but Japan does remain the only one that is a "Honorary West" that even in progressive people either appeal to certain underlying prejudices or otherwise sidestep them.

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

I agree with that

[–] BobDole@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

I can't help but feel this is still an American issue

America has supported their fascist ruling party since they were allowed to have it back and helped suppress left wing politics

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 23 points 3 days ago

A lot of people like that about Japan though. Just like people fawning about high conviction rates.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago

I remember reading an account of a foreigner living in Japan just seeing a yakuza goon beating a man half to death at a train station and people just walking by. No amount of anime or video games can paper over such a deep rot.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago

Aside from the reversal in urban and rural areas it sounds like the US south.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Its the power of cool japan and soft power, people have a way better view of them than they should

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 29 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Jesus Christ those replies would make hitler blush. Especially funny is one of the ones saying "you usually only see the elderly out on a weekday afternoon" and I'm just thinking "Huh aren't yall going through a massive demographic collapse and aging population which should benefit from an influx of younger immigrants?"

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 27 points 3 days ago

and I'm just thinking "Huh aren't yall going through a massive demographic collapse and aging population which should benefit from an influx of younger immigrants?"

I find it funny how widespread this liberal talking point is in the online left. There's a crisis of social reproduction, capital can't keep up, because things like having children are both undesirable and economically non-viable largely due to effects of market mechanisms? Just get the people from elsewhere , easy (a nice requirement that there needs to be an economic inequality driving people to pack their bags 👀 - or as the libs say, "who will clean your toilet?"). Criticism of capital is seldom given in this context, and if any solution except for increased immigration is given, it's the welfare state.

Even countries that tried explicit natalism, like Poland, didn't really have it work out, in regards to low birth rates.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago

Work yourself to death it's the Japanese way.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

In world cup twitter people were talking about a Japanese dude that tweeted "why are mexicans so happy about turists? They dont find them destructive? And it was just some turists drinking beer and celebrating and the japanese dude had like 10k likes

Ever since the start of tower of babel twitter popular opinion of the japanese has dropped because of their terrible opinions even when leftists japanese are normal the chud ones will post the wrongest opinion you can have like for example them being anti piracy

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

chud japanese people are some of the most delusional people i have ever seen, almost the same levels as chud indians. They have always treated really poorly any latino-japanese immgrants even though they begged and basically payed for them to return to Japan.

[–] Firstnamebunchofnumbers@hexbear.net 21 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Ew! Stinky gaijin infecting my glorious nihon!!!!!!

If japanese people weren't asian, folks would be saying the same shit about them on here as they do about isn'treal and the united SStates

[–] Leegh@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

In Asia there are some people who don’t really see Japan as an ‘Asian’ country anymore because they are so culturally Westernized post-WW2. Many Japanese still seeing themselves as honorary Aryans that view all other Asians beneath them (a mentality gained from pre-WW2 Imperial era) also contributes to this.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago

They really learned the usefulness of soft power in making your country not look like a racist and exploitative shithole.

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago

you mean the country that sells CSAM cartoons in grocery stores is kind of dysfunctional and sick as a society? huh

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's the cuphead flower meme but it's Japanese pop culture then real Japanese racism.

his name is Cagney Carnation

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The crucial question is whether anti-Asian racism that's common in Japan is the animus behind this or is it Islamophobia?

Obviously there's an element of both, but which one is the dominant motivation? I mean, it can't be the islamophobia, like Japan sucks on bigotry, but importing European and Fox News-style Islamophobia is too pathetic even for them

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

Yeah the family looks SEA so I’m guessing this is a “eww there’s lesser Asians sullying my pure culture of borderline (and worse) CP and fascist apologia.”

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

2nd-last or latest TrueAnon episode had a guest saying Twitter's #2 country usership after the US was Japan (still).

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago

they are a big country ~~where lots of japanese live~~ with lots of paperwork jobs, who else could it be?

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

So it's a reflection of a society where chuds are dominant, just like here. Plus it's Twitter.
