Looks kinda DLSS-ish. Not a fan.

It's like the crazy taxi game. Wow, this looks bad. Good job
9.6.2026*
Unless you're from three months in the future.
Really looking forward to be spammed with "Hey, listen!" in Dolby quality.
I love OoT and I still play the game semi regularly, but I just feel so conflicted about this. It's good that a game I like so much is being made more easily available and is getting the (nearly) 30 year old limitations and rough edges polished out, but on the other hand... I just don't know. In my opinion those rough edges give the game a certain charm that gets lost even if the devs do everything right
Also worth pointing out how many very popular games even today have visuals on par with the N64 game. Kids are fine with that; they just don’t want to set up yellow, red, and white AV cables of an N64.
I guess for the middle ground, there is still the unofficial de-compilation project https://www.shipofharkinian.com/ . Just added it to the post.
Ship of Harkinian is how I've been playing OoT the most lately and I can't recommend it enough
Ship is amazing. Played through z64 like 5 times when it came out and tried to play on cart again, but the frame rate, cutscenes, and item selection were painful. I can’t go back to the original. I’ve been spoiled
Understandable. I'm not that sensitive in the way you describe it. Still prefer playing the games as they were intended, with original resolution and even CRT filters (RetroArch fan here). There are lot of cool mods for the original Rom file, so there is that. I haven't gotten into trying out Ship myself, there are too many games (plus emulated ones)! And to be honest, I also fear getting spoiled too. :D It could happen to any of us!
I will say pointedly, the instant you place an item onto the left directional pad, you’re fucked, it’s over.
Going from 3 C-button items to 7 makes it a whole new game. Especially Majora’s Mask, with all of the mask changes all the time. No way I could go back to just the C-buttons after that.
The thing that I remember the most about OoT, even all these years later, is the ambience. If they can keep that general feeling while modernizing the game, it will be awesome. We'll see whether or not they're able to!
I'm of a similar mind, but at least no remake, good or bad, will remove the original. Thanks to the hard work of decompilation teams, anyone can play a truly definitive version of the original OoT at any time. It's both preserved and perfected, available as it was but with support for the controllers, PC setups, and refresh rates that we are used to today.
That's why I'm okay with the remake even if it is a strong departure from the original game. I'm more interested in a reimagining type of remake rather than one that just tries to do exactly what the original did with better graphics.
Oh a new Fable game!
LOL
If it's not rated T for Teen in the USA it might not be a good / honest remake, because there's no way in hell Deadhand and the Shadow Temple / Bottom of the Well wouldn't get it rated that high in modern times.
Twilight Princess was T, so there's hope
T for Twenty years ago, so this isn't really an indication that this one will be T as well.
I would be so excited for this if I was still willing to support Nintendo
Same. Just hoping for an emulator in the future
They lost my support after TotK in 2023, but the RAMpocalypse worked in their favor to bring me back in 2026. Affordable options for new gaming hardware will be pretty much nonexistent for years to come, so I went ahead and got a Switch 2 while it's still at its lowest price so I at least know I'll be able to play their exclusives for the life of the console. I won't be paying for NSO or anything other than their good single player exclusives, though, as I have a Steam Deck for everything else.
Nintendo seems to be going down the ultra realism path now. Kind of started when we heard they twere publishing Duskbloods
Whether it's a simple remake or a more complex reimagining, I can't wait for this game and I'll be playing it on day 1.
I can't imagine why people would be against OoT with Twilight Princess graphics or better. I'm sure it'll be astounding!
I bought a Switch, which for a long time I call "My $500 Zelda machine", as I really only played Breath of the Wild on it.
Now with Factorio and the classic N64 library, I feel better about buying it.
There isn't anything technically speaking about the Switch 2 I want, as I just got a PS5 and it blows that out of the water.
Shame this isn't on switch, I'd have liked to play it
I will not buy a Switch 2, especially for these prices. I wonder what the reason for Switch 2 exclusivity is. Either it is just to have a reason for people to buy the system, or it is truly technical, in which case the ambitions might be even bigger than we think.
This is rumored to be a from the ground up reimagining of OoT, not a touch-up like the 3DS version. It wouldn't run on the Switch 1.
They could clearly develop it as a cross platform title, like the previous Zelda games in example. The question is, if they want to. I think one factor is, that there is no Switch 2 emulator out there, plus Nintendo tries to sell Switch 2. We have absolutely no way of knowing it couldn't run on Switch 1, just because its a new game.
True, this is still only rumors, but from the beginning they said that this was going to be a game that takes full advantage of the Switch 2 hardware. Time will tell, but Nintendo hasn't been shy about releasing cross-platform games if it's feasible. Much as they hate emulation, I don't think it holds them back from doing so, as the install base for the Switch 1 is huge and they like making money (not that you'd know from some of their decisions...).
I think this has been planned as a Switch 2 only title from the beginning due to being too advanced for the Switch 1.
You paid $500 for a Switch 1?
Something around that, I don't remember exactly
I want to say the OLED peaked at USD$350, what countries dollar were you speaking of?
The Switch OLED is currently $400, only $50 less than a Switch 2 (until Sept.) That's an insane price!
$300 something for the system, $60 for the game, not sure how much a pair of pro controllers cost, but I walked out spending close enough to $500 for the point to stand.
US dollars, don't remember what year I bought it. I'm guessing around 2018, it was shortly after breath of the wild released.
Then you got it in 2017 and if you only got the console and BotW, it was $360 + tax, which is below $400 even if you paid the highest sales tax in the country at the time. So it's a $400 Zelda machine.
They also said a pair of Pro Controllers, which would have been ~$70 a piece, so right around that $500 price point, probably over.
Rather disingenuous at that point, as those were not necessary to play the game.
Can't find the OoT content in this video. Not sure if the video was changed but at the given timestamp all I see is StarFox.
OoT is one of my favorite games, and I'm not personally interested in a remake. You don't need a new Mona Lisa just because we invented better paints.
Edit: That said I wouldn't say no to trying it if it was put in front of me.
Yes, the video was edited and cut, initially I think there was 20 or 30 minutes wait time before the actual video started, as it was a live stream capture. I updated the link with new correct timestamp: https://youtu.be/PvUPDSDZg1k?t=3183
That picture is about all we got to see anyway.
Oh wow, I saw it too!
I was a skeptic of the FF7 remakes but both wound up being great, in my opinion. I don't know if OoT is as much fertile ground for added content as FF7 was/is. I won't be too interested in a remaster, we already had that and it felt like it had generally lost something.
OoT doesn't care about its plot nearly as much. I suppose it could, though. It depends.
Really, I need new dungeons at a minimum. That's what I care about. If I'll be solving the same puzzles for the 35th time, I don't want to.
Also, re: FF7, I squeal with glee every time I see Cid—I'm so happy with what they've done.
There's a shit ton of "environmental storytelling" that Zelda games love to throw and never explain; OoT has plenty of that. Just any change to the Shadow Temple would send people wild. It's always been hard to expect Nintendo to actually do anything about any of it because they never ever do, but this being a full remake similar to FF7 is giving a lot of hope.
Oh, I'm fully aware.
This right here:
It's always been hard to expect Nintendo to actually do anything about any of it because they never ever do,
is what I mean by "Zelda doesn't care about it's plot." Nintendo has almost always been more interested in gameplay first, and maybe experiential storytelling second. 'Experiential' being the kind that you, the player, tell along with Link, in the sense that 'you' literally are him.
Actually, I would relate Zelda's environmental storytelling to the kind of beach seashell collecting that Miyamoto has always wanted Zelda to feel like, where it's more about the feeling of discovery than it is the specific implications of it all. Not to say those implications are never taken seriously.
That said, I am salivating a bit at the thought of what they might be doing for the Forest Temple. That place has so much atmosphere, and atmosphere is something Zelda has always done really, really well.
Yeah, but the fact that Nintendo (can't remember if it was Miyamoto orr Aonuma) lamented that younger TotK players didn't know how important Rauru is, and this reveal that it's not a 1 to 1 remake after all, is what's sending the fandom into heavy hopium that this time, for sure, Nintendo will do what they've never done before and actually push the story. The tapestry presentation can certainly be read as supporting this expectation, too.
I really want it too, that they're finally putting the same love and detail into the story as FF7 is doing, but I won't believe it until I see it. The reveal was a big disappointment to me for that reason.
Uh, Zelda's always done the tapestry thing though, haven't they? 'Cause they like being presented as old myths.
I do think it's possible, though. I don't want what I'm saying to be read as pessimism: Skyward Sword cared about its storyline kind of a lot, and while BotW and TotK don't put it in your face all the time, I mean, they added voice actors. For the very first time, Zelda has voices.
And it's not like OoT isn't enamored with Hyrule's dark past. If they're going to expand on anything, it'll almost certainly be that.
It's worth waiting to see some actual gameplay, I think. I can't really say what my expectations are because we haven't even seen anything.
Uh, Zelda's always done the tapestry thing though, haven't they? 'Cause they like being presented as old myths.
I can only think of Wind Waker and BotW, also a bit of stained glass action in Minish Cap. Most of that was just for the intro, to set up the state of the world, and then nothing (beside the Calamity tapestry in BotW). I suppose this tapestry might be the same thing, it just reprises the opening narration from a voice that might turn out to be no one in particular.
Zelda games do have a story of course, but they always come up with new elements for the backstory that they then completely abandon. Very rough "pillars" have stuck, like the Goddesses, Sacred Realm, Hylia, but the actual world building elements to make a real kingdom beyond just basic fantasy setting, actual "historical" events like Majora, the Dark Interlopers, Lorule, the Minish - you're lucky if you see it mentioned in the next Hyrule Historia. They make a new Zelda game, they come up with a new tribe and a new ancient power that becomes the new mechanic, and when the game is done, you never see that again. Maybe you see an Easter egg in Breath of the Wild, at most.
(I say that while being a pro timeline fan myself btw, the story has been there since the first games - just not the detailed world building, Rauru banishing the Dark Interlopers and founding Hyrule kingdom is the absolute most we'll get as world building backstory outside the actual games)
And it's not like OoT isn't enamored with Hyrule's dark past. If they're going to expand on anything, it'll almost certainly be that.
Most of OoT was almost entirely vibes though, no context for anything. The Forest Temple was literally made for Hyrule Castle material but then cut out and pasted into its own temple, and bam, new place with its own vibe and you're free to come up with your own backstory - because Nintendo sure won't do it.
But yeah, the brand new world redesign (entirely judging by Link's bed being completely redone and not at all like the OG) makes me think we'll see more about places like the Shadow and Forest Temples. Not sure they'll put as much love to actually cement and explain the connection between OoT Rauru and TotK Rauru (I'll be happy if Rauru is now full Zonai furry), actually expand the world's history beyond just what we saw in the OG, but surely we'll see a bigger castle town, more inhabited places in the overworld, all that with a bit more information on local cultures like the Sheikah, actually literally anything about the Hyrulean civil war and Ganondorf's involvement, and so on and I'm huffing hopium again and I have zero trust in them with this ridiculous teaser and no gameplay.
