/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Actual crossposts are cool, though. Botting communities is artificial and lame.

I saw it up, and I dropped a comment. And it was gone about 30 seconds later.

Possibilities I've considered:

  • Not knowing how to crosspost, but wanting to include content not available to other instances unaffiliated with lemmy.world
  • Spiteful reposting without giving credit due to an assumed grudge

Not much else comes to mind.

[–] negativenull@piefed.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I hope it's the former, and not the latter, but there's been much drama recently, so hard to say.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I feel like I'm missing something here.

[–] negativenull@piefed.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The drama is about lemmy.world hate, and piefed hate, not specifically about this community

[–] hendu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

You called it, and there it is... Reposted by a lemmy.world user, too!

Spiteful reposting

spiteful reposting must be the worse thing you can make out of spite 😆

is it possible to repost from an instance your instance is defederated with? i am not sure, but it makes sense to me that it would be impossible, so someone just found workaround to copy the content.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That Risa isn't defederated with .world, though. I'm a member and it's visible. As far as crossposting to an otherwise unaffiliated instance is concerned, I am uncertain.

ok. i was just speculating without much knowledge on the topic...

Can anyone comment on what is going on .... I watch the posts often enough over time but if I leave for a week, the whole landscape can change so dramatically. Sometimes I feel like this community is an episodic show and you have to tune in every day in order to stay in the loop .. otherwise, if you skip a day or even a week, you'll miss out on several storylines in the background that got recently introduced.

I like everyone here but it gets confusing and even disturbing when things are happening in the background that we don't know about it.

People noticed that all posts to TenForward were being lifted in full (including anything the poster wrote in the post body) to the dbzero risa community. Every post is showing up after an hour or two.

The gumgum account that is doing it is one of a handful of accounts that are botting various communities in the same way. The accounts are not labeled as bots, and they are not using the crosspost function, which makes it seem like the intent is to artificially create activity in these communities without transparency to the users that these posts are coming from elsewhere on Lemmy.

I've received messages from posts I've made (not on tenforward) where the person realized they were replying to questions by "me" that were just reposted by the bot. It's pretty lame.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

That was all easy to see ... the question is ... why? ... many different people across many different communities are able to do that and they probably do without us knowing.

The question is why this individual or group are doing this now.

And I temper that with the message that I don't want to put anyone in a corner, I'm just curious as to what is happening because I think many people are thinking the same thing. You guys do great work and I have a lot of fun here ... I just get worried when stuff like this happens because it might be a sign that other things are happening.

There was some fediverse drama a little while ago about when/if defederation is justified, which resulted in some infighting and strong opinions. This is almost certainly someone with an axe to grind against .world following that.

[–] SourGumGum@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well it’s simple, I posted memes I saw here.

I could do what op does and take them from Reddit I suppose? All I care about is getting content off .world and promoting smaller communities.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 8 points 23 hours ago

Wouldn't it be easier to use the cross-post function? Why do the extra work?

[–] Andy_R@feddit.uk 9 points 1 day ago

Stolen memes on the Internet? Surely you jest.

[–] teft@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Like a mirror community? Are those members mustachioed?

[–] SourGumGum@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I repost your memes, you repost reddit memes. Who really cares?

[–] hendu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 16 hours ago

Ultimately, this. Memes are a bit of Internet culture intended to enter the collective consciousness. Unlike comics or artwork, they shouldn't need credit or attribution, just a natural spread as people discover and share with their friends or communities.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I make 99% OC and appreciate seeing my content actually reaching others enough to consider being reposted. No watermarks, just creativity and love of Trek along with its diverse community. The credit isn't the point, for me at least.

[–] SourGumGum@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That’s cool!

Well I’ll continue to post it and share it around, that’s the joy of memes.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Indubitably.

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works -2 points 21 hours ago

"Oh no, my meme spread! Memes never do that!"
