If you actually need a car, this one is the most important cost saving measure:

  • Drive a reasonably sized car which isn't optimized to exploit laws made for trucks.
[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Fuel efficiency rules are idiotic now. The automakers used to classify everything as a truck to get around fuel efficiency regulations. The PT Cruiser being classified as a truck was the last straw, so the regs were changed beginning in 2012 to base fuel economy off of vehicle footprint to keep automakers from reclassifying vehicles. But that change had the consequence of effectively outlawing small trucks. Suddenly a sedan has less-strict economy standards than a compact van or truck.

Notice how the small truck segment disappeared in 2012, and when the Ranger came back in like 2018-ish, there were models of it larger than older F150s? It's because the manufacturers learned they could just make the trucks bigger to get around standards.

It's also why around 2021/2022 all the compact cargo vans (NV200, Transit Connect, ProMaste4 City) were discontinued. The regulations essentially outlawed small vans designed to haul heavy loads.

If you have enough money for the upfront cost, electric cars are cheaper over their lifetime.

Not starting a war is both cheaper upfront and ongoing.

If you can charge at home. I assume if you live in apartment and charging only at fast chargers it would get expensive fast.

I assume it wouldn't be that difficult and expensive to build some basic chargers for charging your car over night but I don't know about this much, and how people would manage to find the parking space with charger since not every flat gets their own parking usually.

It depends on where you live, but in most places, even the most expensive rapid charger is still cheaper than fuel. That's not even including the lower maintenance costs of EVs.

You do miss out on the convenience of home charging, and that is a pretty big deal for most people. The best part about an EV is waking up to a full charge every day and never having to stop to fill up.

Perhaps ironically, avoiding 'stop and go traffic' becomes easier as gas prices go higher.

It’s really good we are still talking about the Epstein files but I need to emphasise that THE WAR ISN’T TO DISTRACT FROM THEM, but is Israel’s plan to colonise the Middle East. This is a bigger deal imo.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago

"two things definitely can never be true at the same time" strikes again. Lemmy's favorite take.

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

But why did Trump agree to join Israel to join the war? Epstein files!

I'm sure that the fact that Epstein collected blackmail evidence on his pedo buddies while also being an informant to the Israeli intelligence service has nothing to do with it.

You were making sense to the Americans up until that last one

[–] KindnessIsPunk@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago

Actually one time in a fuel saving measure memo Obama mentioned checking your tire pressure as a small footnote and they made a major talking point on at least 3 weeks of Fox News about how his fuel measures were entirely about checking tire pressure.

Just stay there, no need for transport

Who are you, my boss?

[–] cymbal_king@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

And/or public transit!

[–] iamericandre@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

How am I supposed to ride a bike into my basement?

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

I got my first car in my mid forties

Before that, I lived somewhere with great public transport, which I used all the time

My car is electric. A little BYD dolphin essential

They're coming to 'Murica eventually, and they're great

I'm extremely happy that I'm not paying for fuel, but yanks can eat dicks, because your fuel is still incredibly cheap and you choose stupid cars.

@MTZ Darn it, they're right: I do need to check my tire pressure.

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

Last one saves on the cost of gas, but the war itself saves on the gas itself due to the increased price and on the long run saves on the gas by accelerating the green transition.

Obviate your need for owning a motor vehicle
