The US will never live down this level of stupidity and callousness.

[–] discocactus@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I feel like it's pretty much our brand? Has been for a while?

[–] TheTimeKnife@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Before people trusted us to honor important parts of our commitments. Now people expect the worst from us in nearly everything. We lit an assload of soft power on fire and it will likely contribute to our "downfall" from global hegemon to competing great power. Silver lining is that a lot of the wealth we've skimmed off the top of the global economy for decades will now start going back to our allies and industrially underdeveloped parts of the world held hostage by our dominant military and economic position.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Only people who weren't in agreements with you previously thought that.

[–] TheTimeKnife@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Some sure, but not everyone. It took a hit during the Bush years, but the Trump administration has eradicated anyone except lunatic conservatives trying to betray their own country for a taste of power.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The difference is that people are questioning whether they should keep trading in dollars. This is new.

[–] CobraCommander@quokk.au 8 points 2 weeks ago

That is a great outcome though. Hopefully the US is so weakened by Trump that the world can know some peace from Americas evilness.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Sadly, no. It does seem like that though.

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

That’s what they said during W’s reign, but still we managed to find someone more callous. Unfortunately I don’t think he and his cabal are as stupid as we would like to think they are. W on the other hand…

According to the Constitution, Trump cannot legally declare Venezuela the 51st state without congressional approval or Venezuela’s consent.

There’s that pesky concept again that Trump doesn’t seem to understand, or have, or know about.

[–] ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

"Trump cannot" (and "GOP cannot") is the down-beat in the song of life. It doesn't seem to matter what the law says for right-wingers when they're in power. They will do what they please in the absence of adequate resistance.

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Cannot only matters if someone stops them which hasn't been the case thus far

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Not only that- the “resistance” only gets shitty and defensive when you point out their failure to resist.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

without congressional approval or Venezuela’s consent.

I assume they mean and? Even in a world where Venezuela did agree, you still need Congressional approval.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

It's ok. Congress doesn't know about it either so he's clear.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Or care. Also he’ll do it anyway and nothing will happen. We knew he raped kids in 2016.

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

The constitution you reference belongs to a fallen nation.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I mean Hawaii’s consent was pretty shaky back in the 50s

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 1 points 2 weeks ago

there's that pesky concept that this clown ignores laws and norms, and has 2 additional branches of goverment who are dedicated to mothing more than sycophancy to him.

The US government is currently run by calvinball rules.

[–] pirate2377@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Wait, but I thought Canada was going to be 51st state? Or was that Greenland? Or maybe Cuba?? /j

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I bet they would send ice to deport the Venezuelans.

[–] GutterRat42@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why didn't I think about this? This isn't about resources, or annexation. This is about him being the president who added another state. Something Obama didn't do.

Moron, he could easily make Puerto Rico the 51st state.

PR isn't sitting on vast oil reserves, waiting to be plundered.

10 IQ idea. MAGA will love it.

[–] JustKeepStretching@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

The dream of Curtis Yarvin is alive in Venezuela

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That’s what happens if you don’t follow his demands, Canada. Now you got replaced by Venezuela. I am sure this will hurt you.

[–] DetectiveNo64@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

Nah, I'd rather be decoupled from the states.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Do it! We need some more states. Let’s crush the Republican control.

[–] dunestorm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I never had any interest in visiting the US, now I have actual reasons to never go. Thanks big orange baboon!

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I'm surprised. Hispanics generally vote Democratic. If Venezuela becomes a state, it will have 2 Senators and many House of Representatives members.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (7 children)

THey'd get the same representation as Puerto Rico.

You assume by state he means state and not territory. Because let’s be honest, they wouldn’t get any representation at the federal level.

Lol, what? Hispanics are highly conservative. Right wing propaganda has been overwhelming on Spanish social media for decades; it makes Fox News look like MSNBC. Latin American culture is absolutely SEEPED with conservative Christianity, with a deep rooted hatred of LGBT and anything that even vaguely reminds them of the word "socialism".

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yet there is no question that over the past three election cycles, Latino voters – Latino men under 40, in particular – have shifted right. That change has benefited GOP candidates, even as the majority of Latinos still voted for Democrats.

However, evidence from general elections in 2025 in places such as New Jersey, New York and Virginia, as well as special elections in 2026, suggest an abrupt correction is underway, with some of the Latino voters who backed Trump now swinging back to the Democrats.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump received 46% of the Latino vote, marking the highest percentage for a Republican candidate in U.S. history.

As you can see, it’s also working out great for the Latino voters.

Propaganda works.
